Shame is right! When you have a population of roughly 25k students, and as many as 5% engage in ANY activity, sanctioned or not. There is a fiduciary responsibility on the part of the Administrators and Campus Police to maintain the safety of that group. It's technically private property (state owned by overseen by a trust composed of public officers and private individuals). There really hasn't been a 'threat' presented by any of these groups. Besides the "stand and cuff" rituals, in my city, we don't have problems with occupiers. To tell you the truth, if it wouldn't cost me my job and my up-coming pension, I think I have heard enough to convince me that I should probably be picketing with them.
But back to this Dean of whatever she is. I have buddies who've retired and now work out their years till real retirement on campuses. There are some really professional campus police forces here, many of who have the cred of being 'auxiliary state police' (which is really like saying 'party clown' but they can chase people onto our beat mainly). So there is a high requirement for professionalism. I don't know what's going on California campuses. But it's not police work. I have seen video of young women getting hit VERY HARD with batons in the breast and abdominal area. MOST good criminal justice under-grad courses have somewhere in the program some amount of physiology. And I can't remember how many times over the years there were cautions about where you can and can't strike the female body. It would seem they don't have the budget to teach that in California. I also saw the video of the UC Davis kids, sitting prone on the ground, clearly not seeking to engage. They were already signaling their willingness to be arrested. And if some prick wants to make the assertion that spraying them a really unhealthy amount of pepper spray either made the arrest easier, or further protected the arresting officers, they are just making that case for the sake of being contrary. And life is too short to waste your time on that bullshit
What it all comes out to is that not only should that Dean step down, but the head of the campus police, the "officer" using the spray in the videos, and most of all, whoever oversees the campus PDs throughout the UC system state-wide.
