No "the police" (at least the city police) are an extension of the city.

And did you catch tazzys crazy "news" sources? [:D] Dangerousintersection.org, Democracy Now, boingboing.net, Huffpo... some of you people will buy into anything.

The police are an extension of the executive branch, and represent the government. I agree this is no joke, when it is obvious that if no one was watching the police would be more brutal about things, and not even care about it. they would justify it with some of the same things that a few posters on here have used to justify it.

Well if things are still going on closer to Christmas, when we have our annual blanket give away at the park, will see if we can get a few extra ones for any Occupy members that need them. Wonder if me and my girl will get beat for passing out blankets to the homeless.

The police are both the government and the people. This seems to be an example some of the people believing they are above other people.

Its sad... and dangerous... that so many want to turn this into a joke.

Oh no, you cant can you...shame but

Yes, these are "crazy news sources" too. [;)]

Im curious, did you think they were pulling a BreitBart TV act? Or did you just discount the story based upon the sources. Did you even bother to turn on the news today?

Shame is right!  When you have a population of roughly 25k students, and as many as 5% engage in ANY activity, sanctioned or not. There is a fiduciary responsibility on the part of the Administrators and Campus Police to maintain the safety of that group. It's technically private property (state owned by overseen by a trust composed of public officers and private individuals). There really hasn't been a 'threat' presented by any of these groups. Besides the "stand and cuff" rituals, in my city, we don't have problems with occupiers. To tell you the truth, if it wouldn't cost me my job and my up-coming pension, I think I have heard enough to convince me that I should probably be picketing with them.
But back to this Dean of whatever she is. I have buddies who've retired and now work out their years till real retirement on campuses. There are some really professional campus police forces here, many of who have the cred of being 'auxiliary state police' (which is really like saying 'party clown' but they can chase people onto our beat mainly). So there is a high requirement for professionalism. I don't know what's going on California campuses. But it's not police work. I have seen video of young women getting hit VERY HARD with batons in the breast and abdominal area. MOST good criminal justice under-grad courses have somewhere in the program some amount of physiology. And I can't remember how many times over the years there were cautions about where you can and can't strike the female body. It would seem they don't have the budget to teach that in California. I also saw the video of the UC Davis kids, sitting prone on the ground, clearly not seeking to engage. They were already signaling their willingness to be arrested. And if some prick wants to make the assertion that spraying them a really unhealthy amount of pepper spray either made the arrest easier, or further protected the arresting officers, they are just making that case for the sake of being contrary. And life is too short to waste your time on that bullshit
What it all comes out to  is that not only should that Dean step down, but the head of the campus police, the "officer" using the spray in the videos, and most of all, whoever oversees the campus PDs throughout the UC system state-wide.

Fuckin left wing is everywhere... soon you won't be able to buy an Abba CD without hearing about those dirty stinking hippies.

Moonhead -> RE: Police gone too far? (11/20/2011 1:11:15 PM)

Abba are Norwegian: you can't get a lot more Marxist than scum like that.
[;)]

momandaughter -> RE: Police gone too far? (11/20/2011 1:25:50 PM)

Errr... no? Only one member of Abba was Norwegian, the other three Swedish

As far as i recall, Norway is a constiutional monarchy - which is about as far as you can get from Marxism and still be on the same plaent...

Moonhead -> RE: Police gone too far? (11/20/2011 1:49:59 PM)

I recall a lot of talk about how the shootings in Oslo were obviously a marxist thing a few months back, mostly from the same people who seem to think that all of the constitutional democracies in Europe are marxist.
(Though I do apologise for attributing Abba to the wrong bit of scandinavia: I must have had them confused with a black metal band...)

More right wing crap from you. You are so doubting Thomas, but I expect nothing less. Do you think the Judge herself is making this up ?

Watch the link from about 39.30 in. If you wait a bit it runs on to the very dangerous old lady also pepper sprayed by the police.

On the heels of this, we have the Davis University incident in California...

http://boingboing.net/2011/11/18/police-pepper-spraying-arrest.html

A group of protesters, sitting in a line, are sprayed by one cop with pepper spray.

In the video above, you see a police officer [Update: UC Davis Police Lt. John Pike] walk down a line of those young people seated quietly on the ground in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, and spray them all with pepper spray at very close range. He is clearing a path for fellow officers to walk through and arrest more students, but it's as if he's dousing a row of bugs with insecticide.

Thank you boi.

I have no problems with the students being arrested. But force should equal force.

Still waiting. [8|]
