JUDGE KAREN SMITH (ret.): I was wearing—and I brought this—a hat, which says the “National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer.” And as you can see, in color, it’s quite bright. And at night—

AMY GOODMAN: It’s fluorescent green.

JUDGE KAREN SMITH (ret.): It’s fluorescent green. And then I was wearing it, and I had a pad and a pen, and I was there to take down the names of people who were arrested so we could follow them through the system and just observe what was going on. And as I’m standing there, some African-American woman goes up to a police officer and says, “I need to get in. My daughter’s there. I want to know if she’s OK.” And he said, “Move on, lady.” And he kept pushing—they kept pushing with their sticks, pushing back. And she said—and she was crying. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he throws her to the ground and starts hitting her in the head. And I walk over, and I say, “Look, cuff her if she’s done something, but you don’t need to do that.” And he said, “Lady, do you want to get arrested?” And I said, “Do you see my hat? I’m here as a legal observer.” He said, “You want to get arrested?” And he pushed me up against the wall.

The Police can never go too far, particularly Sting. The further Sting goes the better. Mars woulds be good.

I was thinking that back in the early 90s when I accidentally fell asleep and missed recording the first two songs of a pretty hot Dead show.

Maybe hollywood will keep him busy.

Good story to bring up Tazzy. Too bad it will be over shadowed by the latest political cheerleading BS that most get involved in.

When the government fears the people you have democracy. When the people fear the government you have tyranny.

The police are both the government and the people. This seems to be an example some of the people believing they are above other people.

Its sad... and dangerous... that so many want to turn this into a joke.

The police are an extension of the executive branch, and represent the government. I agree this is no joke, when it is obvious that if no one was watching the police would be more brutal about things, and not even care about it. they would justify it with some of the same things that a few posters on here have used to justify it.

Well if things are still going on closer to Christmas, when we have our annual blanket give away at the park, will see if we can get a few extra ones for any Occupy members that need them. Wonder if me and my girl will get beat for passing out blankets to the homeless.

These OWS idiots should have been flushed out immediately. The fun thing for me is to watch these big city demo mayors trying to figure out what to do with them. These are their voters! The Obama generation! If they were REALLY after wall street types, they'd march on the white house because as you all know, o'dumbo's administration is REEKING with wall street money and people. The OWS is just an o'dumbo distraction... I hope it goes on through the demo's convention next summer. What a bunch of whiney-assed fools and tools for that matter.

I have asked you before, and I ask you again.

Show me proof that the OWS is backing the Obama Administration.

If you cant, you are just blowing hard...

Your opinion is noted many times.

You feel people can only exercise their constitutional rights, if you agree with it. I get, and I believe they entire forum gets it.

You feel the status quo is fine and should be maintained as is. You want to play the political cheerleading game, which is actually a large part of the problem in the US.

Politicians on both sides pander to the corporations.

Now I have answered you seriously, but from what I have seen I doubt I will get a truly serious, non-rhetoic answer in return.

They are the enforcement arm of the local and state governments. They have special laws to protect them. Thier life is worth more than yours. A lot of laws don't apply to them. And when they are caught doing something illegal they are very likely to get substantially less time than a normal citizen.

If people treated you like that wouldn't you think you were better than them. Look at that Lohan girl. She wasn't even in jail long enough for her food to digest.

On the heels of this, we have the Davis University incident in California...

http://boingboing.net/2011/11/18/police-pepper-spraying-arrest.html

A group of protesters, sitting in a line, are sprayed by one cop with pepper spray.

In the video above, you see a police officer [Update: UC Davis Police Lt. John Pike] walk down a line of those young people seated quietly on the ground in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, and spray them all with pepper spray at very close range. He is clearing a path for fellow officers to walk through and arrest more students, but it's as if he's dousing a row of bugs with insecticide.

http://boingboing.net/2011/11/18/police-pepper-spraying-arrest.html

There are pictures and video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuWEx6Cfn-I&feature=youtu.be

It cannot be a surprise students are protesting. Amongst one of the protest messages is the rise in fees at the University of California. These protests and awareness efforts have been going on since 2002, when the first major fee increases were put in place by the UC Regents during a Christmas break (I would know, I was there at UCLA when it happened). It was only a matter of time when students would come to the conclusion that enough was enough. Combine this with the other societal problems our nation is facing, and it is easy to deduce that these times are ripe for protest.

It is understandable that a bullhorn outside of Organic Chemistry would likely disturb class. But these actual laboratories are not the only laboratories at the university; in fact, our nation's universities are supposed to be laboratories in and of themselves, allowing students to explore their education and interests. Part of this exploration is developing ideology, exploring politics and coming to conclusions about the larger world. This can include a variety of endeavors in college, including becoming passionate about issues and exercising one's First Amendment rights as an expression of such.

The UC crest reads upon it, "Let there be light." The UC must allow space for its students to express their opinions and raise their voices. If they do not, there are plenty of alumni, lawyers particularly, willing to step in and help them do so.
