lol... its the "slave" in me i think.

I like to think it is more of a female instinct.
Feed the men so they don't bitch...
Feed the children cause they are just so damned cute...
Feed the animals in the neighborhood because they must be hungry....

Might make a good topic sometime ^^

ETA
I read that again... and ooooo you meant the serving bit makes the slave in you happy. My bad, me too.
We should start a soup kitchen to serve doms!

I love working for tips. (well til I finish school anyways)
What I make is based purely on my performance.

If I work harder, take tables when everyone else wants to go home, take the tables the other girls just "don't want to deal with" and consequently do more work, I leave with more money then them.
I like that.

This makes me happy, as I am often putting out more work- compare this to when I worked retail and you had a bunch of lazy people not doing their jobs, which left more work for me- while we got payed the same.

ETA- my actual paychecks normally range from 0.00 to 20.00, Since taxes are taken out of them.

I only ask because it seems pretty amazing that your income before tips is 0.00 to 20.00, after tax. What on earth are you being taxed on?

Do you pay tax on tips? ie, Do you have to declare them on a Tax Return?

agirl

The way it works at mine is... all credit card tips are recorded and taxed. At the end of the night when I clock out, a thing pops up on the computer that asks me to declare how much I made in cash tips, which is then also taxed.
The taxes are taken out of my paychecks, which are 2.73 an hour, and if I have had a decent two weeks and claim most of it, can reduce said paychecks to nothing.
It sucks a bit because the paystubs tell me how much I made before taxes(in regards to a paycheck), which is normally anywhere from 130-150 every two weeks, and then it shows fed withholding takes this much, SS takes this much... til it is at 0 or sometimes, happily at a bit more.

We cross posted :)

So what do you live on if after you are taxed you have 0.00 to20.00?

That's paychecks.
Tips is what I live on. =D
And since I am ever so good at serving(YAY a pun)
When I am actually working I do quite well.
Customers can normally tell when you are happy and enjoying making them happy, or just faking.

The hourly wage, is what she is referring too, agirl. The 2.50 or so an hour is what she gets on her check. She gets her tips at the end of the night, in cash, and that is what she lives on. Her paycheck pays her tax bill.

I have a friend who I often talk to in the UK. He was just as blown away as agirl is to hear how I make my money. That I have to rely upon the good graces of my tables to make a living wage is just... something that blows his mind.

We pay tax on everything we earn or sell over here, pretty much.

Its the way our tax system is designed. Everyone pays in... some people get it all back, if they have children, they get back extra... some get nothing back, others pay more in.... all this is at the end of the year.

On a paycheck, you get an hourly wage. From that hourly wage, there are tables that tell an employer how much he must withhold to pay against the tax obligation at the end of the year. FICA is paid by everyone who makes a living, its what finances Social Security and Medicare.

The tables base the amount paid in on the amount of the paycheck. For a server, that also includes any claimed tips. Cash tips arent always claimed, credit car tips always are.

From the first penny?

FICA yes.

quote:

For the calendar year 2011, the employee's share has been temporarily reduced to 4.2% of gross compensation, with a limit of $106,800.[8] The employee's share of the Medicare portion is 1.45% of wages, with no limit on the amount of wage subject to the Medicare tax.[6]

Meaning from the first penny, taxes on this will be paid in the amounts shown above. Federal and state are not usually this way. but the amount it starts at is low, like around 50 dollars.

Does it show what you did claim in tips? Your tax base would be on that, not just the hourly rate.

So a question for those in the service industry.

We usually tip on the credit card, but but all I've read here I was wonder if it would be better to tip cash.

Does the government have an accurate amount on what you've been tipped if it's on the credit card, and not when it's cash?

The reason I'm asking is this: we tip much more than what the government assumes is tipped on a bill, and I'd rather see the extra go to the server than to taxes. If tipping on the credit card slip we make that impossible, we'll tip in cash from now on, so that there is a little extra wiggle room for them to declare to have gotten less than what we actually left.

Pizza Delivery.... What would anyone expect from a job advertised as Pizza Delivery? I order a takeaway because they OFFER that. They aren't doing me a favour.

They really are. They use their own personal vehicles and gas. They don't get company vehicles. By not tipping the deliver guy you're saying to them "I don't care that you're using your gas and vehicle to spare mine."

Servers always prefer cash.

My regulars will tip me in cash. Most everyone who works in the industry will tip in cash. And its perfectly fine to pay the bill on a card and still tip in cash.

Missed this. You are correct. They know eaxctly how much on credit cards. They dont in cash.
