Marc2b -> Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 1:12:37 PM)

I used to drive cab so I know how important tips are to people who depend upon them. I also know how fucking aggravating it is when someone pulls THIS SHIT on you. I can tell you from experience that this is nothing new, those “Christians” of a evangelical bent were always giving out those stupid tracts instead of a real tip, thinking that they were actually doing you a favor (I took them home and put them in the bathroom as an emergency toilet paper supply… ya know, in case I get snowed in by a blizzard or something).

The Jehovah Witnesses were the worst of the lot. Those bastards NEVER tipped (at least with the evangelicals you got the stupid tract) True story: Low on change one day I was unable to come up with the last five cents owned to some Jehovah’s. Did they say, “oh, never mind,” and leave it at that. Nope. I actually had to go out of my way (wasting my time and thus not earning any money because we worked on commissions) to a store and make change for those cheap bastards so that they could have their stinking nickel. A FUCKING NICKLE!!!!!! Cheap fucking bastards! [>:]

Christians of a more liberal bent tended to be more generous… the Unitarians were the best.

Other lousy tippers:

Welfare recipients.

Country club people (the members, not the employees).

Canadians (sorry to my Canadian friends here on CM but the truth must be told).

Teen agers.

Social security recipients.

I can understand someone on a fixed income giving no more than the standard amount but I don’t care what a persons situation is… if you can’t give a decent tip, don’t engage the service. These people need their tips.

And folks, I’m far from rich myself but I pride myself on being a generous tipper and I implore everyone to do the same. Make someone’s day… especially if they look like they’re over worked and are having a lousy day.

See, I think that's really rude. Like insanely rude. It's a practical joke disguised as "doing you a favor."
"Here, have a $10 tip -- syke!!!" If you want to leave something like that, at least leave it in addition to an actual tip.

I always try to tip at least the average, unless the service sucks.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 1:33:48 PM)

Some people leave a good tip and the tract. That doesn't bother me.

needlesandpins -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 1:36:51 PM)

i totally agree with you on this. wherever the service is good i tip, even if it's only the change i have left. on the other hand i'm quick to say my piece if the service is poor too.

my ex used to deliver for take-away companies and people would have him stood in the pouring rain looking for 5pence in his change. he'd be piss wet through and miss out on the next deliveries due to not being back in time. we had massive floods a couple of years ago and virtually every company shut down except his. he had to go 10 miles out of his way to do a delivery and rather than thank him the people put in a complaint because he was late! in his experiance the best tippers are the ones with the least money.

i think sometimes people just assume that the people providing a service are getting well paid to do it. little do they realise just how much these providers really need the tips.

When I last waited tables we were charged taxes by the ticket price. 15% of the price of the ticket, we paid out of our pockets for those that might have stiffed us. It rarely happened to me, but I did have it happen and knew many others that did. We had to pay on money we never saw.

When I managed the office of taxi cab company and dispatched for another... wow.. what a business.. cut throat and the drivers got screwed by the company and customers. I got out within a year.

I tip far too well, sometimes 50%, but never less than 25%. If I can't afford the tip, I can't afford the service. The only one I will not tip is my mail carrier. They have a government job and I will not tip them... not ever. Holiday cheer and a card.. sure.. money... no way.

I can go along with that if the server is an asshole with a piss poor attitude but I always try to gauge the situation. Sometimes the service is lousy because the server is new (we're all rookies at one time or another) and still learning or because they are harried due to over work (eg short staffed). In those cases I don't take it out on them but try to be more generous figuring it will be a bright spot (and give them some encouragement) in an otherwise lousy day.

Also (and I'm not ragging on you but am speaking to everyone) it is important to remember that if the food is lousy or poorly prepared, that is the cook's or the managment's fault, not the server's.

FR

I have mixed feelings on this (and I've waitressed in the past).

Essentially your employer is requiring the customer to subsidize your wages (which should be covered in the cost of the products/service you are purchasing). TIPS stands for To Insure Prompt Service and should be in proportion to the value of the service you have provided. Lousy service, lousy tip. Average service, average tip. Stellar service, stellar tip.

I'm more generous in tips than Master is, which is why when we go out I ALWAYS get the tip ;) regardless of who pays for the meal.

Depending on where your customer is from, it may not be customary to tip.

That wouldn't bother me either (but the tract would still end up in the emergency toilet paper pile) but I personally don't recall any such times. Every time I saw those big shit eating grins gleaming in the sunlight (how do evangelicals get their teeth so white?), and those neatly pressed suits I would groan, knowing that I was going to get another stupid tract.

In my experience it is the middle class, particularly the lower middle class, that are the best tippers. They get it. The very poor (old people on SS or Welfare recipients) and the very wealthy (not that they took cabs very often, but sometimes they did) were the worst.

In fairness, it should be noted that there were exceptions both ways.

I almost always double the meter fee as a tip.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:01:13 PM)

Yep. But you never know. You just don't know. I've had more females lose out on a better tip from me because she assumed that because *I* am female, I don't tip. I always tip, and I tip well. I was a server and a bartender for years. (and made VERY good money thanks to my wonderful customers!)

LafayetteLady -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:01:15 PM)

In most states, it is illegal for managment/owner to take the cost of the service out of the server's wages, although almost all will try it. I did have it tried at one place I worked, and I pointed out that patrons paid at the front, not to the servers, so they certainly weren't getting it from me. Problem is that those business tend to pay under the table and people need those jobs desperately. They go along rather than stand up for what's right.

In the US, the worst tippers are always foreigners, whether they be Canadian, German, British, it doesn't matter. Actually had a discussion with my German girlfriend years ago who travels extensively. The book she had bought when she first traveled here (almost 20 years ago now) had stated that 10% was considered a standard and generous tip to food servers! I explained that 15% was standard, 20% was for good service. She has never undertipped again. She may be thrifty, but she isn't cheap by any standard. She was simply following what a guide had told her was appropriate.

A lot of food servers hate waiting on Senior Citizens and claim they don't tip well. The servers, however, don't give them top notch service either. Older people can require more of your attention and they do appreciate their servers being a bit friendlier. Do that and they will tip at the very least within the standard. Not all, of course, but more will than won't if you treat them with a little respect instead of like they are an interruption of your day.

Now the above only applies to the food service industry. I have no idea about taxi drivers, what the OP was talking about or how they tip.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:05:18 PM)

Not all of us Canadians, Marc. I vastly OVERtip unless the service is tremendously bad AND it's due to the server.

Yeah, that shit happened to me to. We had to report tips and the IRS presumed that we made a certain amount so if we didn't make that much in tips (which was usually the case), we had to pay taxes on money we never made. [>:]

tolovetolaugh -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:05:44 PM)

I have gotten those shitty pamphlets before. What makes it worse is my restaurant has some regulars, an older lady and a bunch of teenagers which I can only assume is some kind of youth group that come in around once a month.
They always rack up a huge bill, pay with a hundred dollar bill... and than leave barely any tip and one of those crappy "Jesus will save you" pamphlets, with their churches name and address on them. O the fantasies I have had about going to their church....
I always go in the bathroom after they leave, and sure enough, those idiotic cheapskate, Jesus believing, responsibility shifting, son of god eating, less worth then the fly eggs on a camel turds white spots, pushy sanctimonious "i'm better than you cause I have Jesus even though I am the left overs of selective breeding", *deep breath* Assholes.... always leave pamphlets on the sink and behind the toilets. So I crumple them up and throw them away adn dream of the day I can put homemade devil horns on their car.

tolovetolaugh -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:07:04 PM)

Anyone else become selectively racist when working for tips?

Lockit -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:10:00 PM)

This was in Colorado and we were paid $2.15 an hour and no one was under the table. This company was fantastic and we had savings plans, insurance and the whole bit. But because they didn't want anything to cause any trouble... they automatically took the taxes out on our tickets. It kept all of us safe... but was a drag when we paid on something we never received. Whether it was legal or not, I don't know. I was new to Colorado at the time and the last time I waited tables before that was in California and we got minimum wage plus tips and took care of our own taxes... or lies in most cases. There were a few decades between my serving tables in these states though. lol

tazzygirl -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 2:12:18 PM)

Me, I admit it... certain customers would come in and literally not tip on a party of 10, then complain to Management when the mandatory party gratuity was added, so Management would take the tip off. We complained loud and strong. Management finally upped the mandatory tip to 20% and those customers stopped coming in. These were always Indian customers. The servers just started refusing to wait on them. We all understand that it happens... once in a while. But we were getting 6 tables a night like that, mostly parties over 6.

And, yes, those tables had their service suffer. Why kill myself for someone who brings in 10 people, orders 5 apps, 5 entrees, 1 desert, drink only water, then leave no tip.

Eventually they got the message and found somewhere else to go.

So do you still pay the average 15-20% or do you stiff the workers because you are philosophically opposed to this model?
