Hmm... Since I don't know the details of the situation, it's a bit hard to comment. Breath play is a touchy area, but also one in which we don't have to walk into blindly because there is a lot of educational resources available to us, both from a BDSM perspective, as well as medical/biological perspectives. For the most part, I avoid the throat as much as possible and engage in breath play mainly via covering the nose/mouth. The throat is a very sensitive area with very tiny parts that are fragile, and difficult, if not impossible at times, to mend. What you describe sounds more like a pass-out than any kind of subspace. Especially with the tingly feeling you described. You didn't describe panic though, which most new players to breath play experience to a certain degree. Did you have a headache later that night or the next morning? If so, I'm placing my money on a pass-out due to low oxygen and high carbon dioxide. (Except again, that high carbon dioxide is usually signified through the "panic look".) There are lots of resources and advice which can help you play a bit more safely. I never consider breath play "safe" per say, but there are many precautions that can be taken. I use a tap system, a clock, and keen observation. I never go for a pass-out. Most of the precautions are a simple matter of learning. It's worth the education.

IMO, IMHO, YMMV, AFAIK, to me, I see it as, from my perspective, it's been my experience, I only speak for myself, (and all other disclaimers here).
