Yet another reason not to shop at Walmart.  Like I needed any more reasons.

Still, one store (albeit a big one) preventing their employees from saying "Merry Christmas" could hardly be considered an all out assault on Christianity.  I still don't get the anger and the attitude.

Its actually eased off in the last couple of years due to the public's reaction, spurred in part by Bill O'Reilly. 3 or 4 years ago many of the major chains prohibited "Merry Christmas" greetings.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 12:39:09 PM)

I guess the irony has to do with the fact that midwinter festivals featuring evergreen trees were a pagan thing long before they were coopted by the Christians. Now, they bitch about 'their' midwinter festival being coopted.

I get emails all the time from someone I was friends with when I lived in Florida. Most are against Obama, for prayer, etc. I delete them and find them all obnoxious.

I used to reply with snopes debunking of urban legends and eventually was dropped from their email forward list.

I've done that on occasion. I have also thought of just asking her to drop me from her forward list (I know she does it in bulk), but she does send some funny jokes as well. It's just easier to just delete the emails when I see what they are about.

The defense of Christmas is not so much a religious thing as a cultural thing. It is a tradition in America to celebrate Christmas. I don’t go to Muslim countries and ask them to rename Ramadan because it might offend me. Seriously, who the fuck gets offended by the name of a holiday?! The simple fact is that there are elements of the left that mount a yearly attack on Christmas. That is why these companies are doing these things, they are responding to that pressure. It is disingenuous in the extreme for some of you posters to act as though that is not the case. Then when some people get upset over the yearly attacks on Christmas you come on acting all holier than thou yourself about how “un-Christian” they are. Here is an idea, why don’t you on the left let people celebrate Christmas and stop insisting they have to call it “Happy Holidays” so that you might not get offended?! Otherwise, live with the resentment over the yearly attacks on Christmas.

Regardless of the history of the Christmas tree, the whole of Christmas is a Christian holiday, and the majority of the marketing in the stores is CHRISTMAS. Yes, there are some Hannuka decorations, maybe even some Kwanzaa stuff. But the bulk of the money is made on marketing Christmas. So it is a bit hypocritical for people to start complaining about the term "Merry Christmas" (and I realize you are not among them).

What toxic66 says is very true. I don't think anyone would go to Israel and bitch that everyone said "Happy Hannuka." In this country, we have bent every which way to accomodate immigrants. Automated operators offer Spanish, the DMV allows you to take the test in Spanish. Local communities must limit their decorations to things considered "non-religious" items (although my town has a Christmas tree, Menorah, Santa Claus and dreidel) so as not to offend anyone.

Yes, we all are entitled to worship and believe as we choose. You aren't Christian, yet get enjoyment from saying "Merry Christmas," and I trust you mean it in the spirit of wishing good things to those you say it to. The people who are bitching and moaning about it are the same who would bite your head off for wishing them a "Merry Christmas" and sniping how they don't celebrate that holiday. What is wrong with people, that they can't just politely say, "thank you" and move on, content in the concept that someone wished them well?

mnottertail -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 1:32:28 PM)

I say Glaedilig Jule in the true spirit and meaning of the holiday,  I am not christian (by a damn sight, nor jewish, nor islamic, nor hindi, nor.....)

Merry Christmas.

I think some people think it's just another straw on the pile.

- No public prayer,
- No public displays of Christmas (Creches, etc.),
- "Holiday" concerts instead of Christmas concerts,
- "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"

and so on.....

I don't shop at Wal-Mart either.

I didnt say he was wrong. Just that his allegations that this is a leftist plot.

Its a result of law suits and threats of boycotts on the religious as well as the anti-religious fronts. Left or right had no distinction in this.

Some people arent happy until everyone around them is miserable.

I think some people think it's just another straw on the pile.

- No public prayer,
OK.  But why are Christians so insistent about public prayer?  Nothing stops them from praying all they want, in public or in private.  Why is it so important that other people be inflicted with their prayers?
- No public displays of Christmas (Creches, etc.),
I see creches at churches and private residences all the time.  So again, who is stopping them?  Yes, government entities don't put up stuff like this anymore.  How does that interfere with anyone's religious freedom?
- "Holiday" concerts instead of Christmas concerts,
Like at schools and things?  Yes, this is true.  So what? Not all students are Christians.  Again, how does this interfere with anyone's right to practice their religion.  The answer is, of course, that it doesn't.  The reverse is also true.  My school district used to have Halloween parties, until the fundamentalists got all hot and bothered about that.  Now they call it a Harvest party.  Dumb.
- "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"
Again, BFD.  Personally, I say merry christmas, but that doesn't mean the holiday has the least bit of religious significance for me.

and so on.....

I don't shop at Wal-Mart either.

I am not picking on you hlen, I know this is the attitude.  But all I can conclude is that people like my crazy FB friends aren't offended because their right to practice their religion is being interfered with, they are offended because others don't share their beliefs.  Guess they are just going to have to get over it.  Which is basically what I told my two FB friends.  I imagine that they have unfriended me by now, so problem solved.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 2:18:05 PM)

Again, which people would those be?  Many people on the left practice some religion.  I consider myself pretty far to the left, but I already have my tree up, my house decorated, and I sent out cards that say Merry Christmas.  I don't see that it is the people "on the left" that have the problem.

What this all seems to be about is that retailers are encouraging, if not requiring, their employees to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.  I don't really see how that interferes with anyone's religious freedom, but whatever.  The retailers obviously consider it to be smart business,. and god knows money is the true religion in this country.  If people don't like it, then they don't have to shop there.  Simple, and hardly worth getting all insulted about.

Kaliko -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 2:23:47 PM)

Well, here I go with my old, crotchety self.

I celebrate Christmas and I wish others a Merry Christmas - on my own time.

I can understand any company's decision to restrict the use of "Merry Christmas." Merry Christmas is limited only to the people that celebrate Christmas. Why would we only wish those people who celebrate Christmas a joyous season? Why not Jewish people? How about Kwanzaa? Or how about an aforementioned Wiccan holiday? How about those that celebrate holidays in addition to Christmas?

Christmas is not the only thing happening this season and for a company to allow its representatives to specifically address only one event and not another is just kind of rude, in my book. Wishing someone a happy holiday season conveys sentiments of happiness for anyone celebrating anything during this season, and for those that celebrate more than one holiday.

I don't see it as a matter of taking Christ out of Christmas (Pagan history notwithstanding - many people just don't want to hear it). I don't see it as even a debate about which religious holiday to wish merriment of, seeing as many of the symbols of Christmas are now considered to be secular. It's just a matter of courtesy. The person standing before you as a customer may not celebrate in the same manner that you do, and why would a hopefully objective representative of the business assume anything otherwise? Not a big deal to be courteous, in my book. I think people are getting wildly offended over something that is nothing more than good manners.

hlen5 -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 2:23:55 PM)

I was trying to refer to the straw that broke the camel's back.

Any one of the things I mentioned aren't momentous, but taken together, some people DO feel Christianity is being assaulted.

Add that to the fact that political correctness is making people accomodate Islam, atheism, and Wicca among others.

I am not anti- any other religion but was expressing a view I've heard from others. It does not offend me that others want their views respected, as is Their right, too.

I'm a little worried about getting flamed for being "intolerant" even though what I've posted is not intolerant of others.

Ah, yes, Godwin's Law.

I am sorry you took that as a flame, that was definitely not my intent.  I understand the points you were trying to make, and I have certainly heard them before.  I recognize they are not necessarily your position, but most of those arguments and similar ones, still seem illogical to me.  That is what I was trying to express.

We good?
