ORIGINAL: DarkSteven Wow. That bothers me a LOT. Part of the entire America concept is the mobility. The idea that someone, through merit and hard work, can rise. IMO, that's part of the reason America has been so successful, is that people get rewarded for their contributions, and as a result, we get patents and new company startups disproportionately compared to the rest of the world. Opportunity and reward. But just because there is opportunity does not mean its a guarantee. I read a letter to the editor recently.. it talked about the guy that invented C-programing, Dennis Ritchie.. and a comparision of his life versus Steve Jobs.. One guy was more of a cog in the wheel, the other guy strikes out on his own with his partners.. totally different end results.. one guy is not widely known (except to programers) and not rich, the other became rich and famous.. Two people, two different results..
