MO, that's part of the reason America has been so successful, is that people get rewarded for their contributions, and as a result, we get patents and new company startups disproportionately compared to the rest of the world. Let me tell you how real that concept of reward can be with large tech corporations for instance. I worked for a start-up in the 2nd half of the 90s that produced technology most of the people getting on the internet or connecting to the office from home or the road used (with one product, it was nearly universal for a while). Anyway, for a few years we kicked Cisco and Ascend's asses and we even built nearly all of Nortel's RA gear, under their brand. Along comes Intel Newtork Systems, with their totally shitty 'don't or barely get it' SOHO products. They buy us. They throw the BEST TAKEOVER PARTY I have ever been to and we're sitting in a conference room at the Colonade Hotel after a lobster and steak buffet and a man gets on stage and says; "Hi, I'm Ron Whatever and I am Vice President of Technology Acquisition (it could have been whatever... it was something like that though).... And my fuction at Intel is to Acquire new Intellectual Property for the company. And I am here to tell you that Intel values people who have ideas. And we are prepared to reward you for it. If you get come up with an idea that results in a patent for Intel, you will be compensated in very short order in the amount of a $5,000 bonus. " Now this caused dead silence. But all of a sudden, my Buddy Gil, who invented dial-up networking, says "Wow, now let me get this straight. I can develop a technology that changes the very way we all work while working for Intel and say, sit on the idea, and leave. Then get a patent on the idea, develop a product line and eventually get bought by a company like Intel for $60,000,000. OR I can tell you about it and you'll give me 5 grand right away. Am I right?" . And the jackass from Intel gave him an enthusiastic yes not even getting Gil had just given the history of our company in a nutshell... and he gave back a really enthusiastic "YES!". Gil got up and said, "Hey I think I made about 6 million in the stock conversion to Intel stock. So I'm gonna go to those shitheads at Coopers & Lybrand and cash it in. I've always wanted to race the Iditarod with my dogs... and I think they're about ready. Later". As Gill left people got up and applauded. And that's why him and people like Tony Li are the ones that make money time after time again, while those that kept sitting at the shrimp buffet, do not. Some trade a paycheck for 9-5 ( or 8am to 11pm - that's part is irrelevant ), others get to live on the edge but walk away with millions or hundreds millions.
