You guys are SERIOUSLY over reacting. If it is that serious, unplug and dont look back.

Seriously. This.

Bullshit! Not overreacting at all. Scan my emails or read my emails, store my emails...and not tell me beforehand? Its all the same. Like it or not , the powers that be do in fact have a digital imprint of you based on your activity on the internet. Emails, pictures, chat, skype- Many people could give a dam who knows what, many others (myself included) do care. Up until facebook I considered mself "off the grid". Google me and you couldnt find me. Now...just today I googled myself and found two bits of info and a pic. The source was facebook but the website presented the same info about me (as on facebook) was not facebook. WTF? Nothing incriminating but it did bug me that that information was distributed without my knowledge of permission.
Some of us do not like to show the world our faces here on this site as we may have a public life. We reserve the right to show who we want to. Other people have no issue showing the world your face and kinks. No issue there. All I ask for is to have the choice to allow info about me to be distributed around the world or not. Sure there are others ways to stay off the grid, including staying off the internet but thats not fun is it?

Google doesnt hide the fact that they scan emails for pertinent info, to feed it into your ad section. To my knowledge (I didnt go further, since I really didnt care) they dont store information, personal or otherwise.

I get it. Some people have an issue with privacy on the net. I understand that. I am sorry, but if you are all fluffed up over some privacy policies, social networking really isnt for you. Stick to pseudonyms, faceless photos, and falsify information. Thats the only way to keep your personal data safe. Or, like I said, stay off the grid. Those are your two options.

Facebook doesnt know ANYTHING pertinent about me. The email address? A junk one that doesnt reveal anything important about me. People that dont have me on their list dont gain any information that could be of any use. People should take a basic Protect Yourself class before being allowed to use a social networking site. If you take control of your privacy, it doesnt have to be an issue.

And for the record, my emails having my cell number on file has actually helped me save an account that I was locked out of. Scary? Not so much.

According to our resident IT geek, your knowledge is woefully inadequate, she says Google stores everything, absolutely everything.

Your cell phone can, unless its a disposable one, be tracked back to you, and therefore your "anonymous" email address isn't anonymous to Google.

So you use an mobile phone that can't be traced back to you (under a false name?) to setup an email that can't be traced back to you (under a false name?) to set up a Facebook account with no real information about you on it (under a false name?), and yet you say others are overreacting for expressing concern?

I don't believe I saw anyone saying they were scared. I think I saw a lot of people saying... stay out of my life, don't take liberties with my personal information and feel you have a right to research, keep data, etc. on me so that you can market me or sell me something. Who wants big brother or anyone else keeping an eye on them for any reason? Some don't want the intrusion, some want some identity protection and some just simply don't want anyone telling us we have to give this information to take part in something that shouldn't really require the information. I see people wanting to understand what is being done and that is reasonable for many reasons. Hyper sensitive or not... its simply smart.

I don't see anyone panicking or acting unreasonably... so what is with the hyper sensitivity to how other people wish to conduct their lives? Why must anyone who wants privacy or personal respect for their choice or privacy... amount to over reacting and maybe if you are so gosh darned sensitive, worried etc... get off the grid?

Are we being insulted because we have different lives, different reasons, wish to understand and have a bit of control and not approving of someone gathering information about us for any purpose? Hey... it will happen... but we don't have to like it and by everyone accepting it... I do have to wonder which liberty could be taken... later on. Like... police agencies use facebook to look for people. All good if you have been good. But what about those of us doing things that might be looked at as incorrect or maybe even suspect... since we are deviant... could the page turn and we be considered potential predators and have them looking at us with ease... because they required a facebook profile to sign up for unemployment or because of who your friends are? There are lines for some of us, that we don't want to cross or have anyone else cross. Does that make us scared, dysfunctional, worried or anything else but maybe individual and wanting it to stay that way?

Most people appear on about 40 lists. There was a TV documentary here (Britain) where a guy tried to drop off the map, pay cash for everything, stop bothering to vote, not use anything that needed ID. He got down to about a dozen before it got chewy and he had to become officially homeless, no car etc.
Facebook is still up for sale isn't it? They've been trying to make it smaller, cuter and with greater cash stream possibilities for potential buyers.
