My mama's hoe cake....which is basically a flat biscuit cooked in an iron skillet...I get pretty close....but somehow it is just not the same.  Never knew her secret, oh the things I would do over again and learn from my mama if I could!  Hind-sight can sometimes be a real bitch.

My grandmother's cinnamon pickles....ohhhhh to die for!!!

Some I miss ... are still made ... but only in their respective towns ... can't get 'em here in TX

Scenic Drive-In's Jack Dempsey Knockout Hamburger  ... in Modesto Calif
(burger, avocado, red pepper flakes, bacon, canadian bacon, lettuce)
&
Stanich's "Special" Hamburger in Portland Oregon
(burger, fried egg, bacon, canadian bacon lettuce ... anything I missed?)
&
Big Ed's 8" burger in Oklahoma (from the 70's ... they got wimpy after the oil crunch)  ... with a normal serving of fries (about 4-5 potatoes worth) ... it made 2 good meals if you were sane ... a bloat if you got piggy.

Then there's Estragonsueppe mit Kartoffelkloese from a little place that no longer exists in Schwabing, Muenchen

Hard to beat Muellerbraeu from Unterpfaffenhoffen
or
Andechserbraeu Dunkles ... with Stinkkaese & bauernbrot

And gone forever is all the fresh northsea shrimp you could eat -- with cold Carlsberg on the 5 hr ferry trip from Stockholm to Turku (they built a bridge).

Anybody ever tried Kaese mit Musik?  :-)

Then there's freshly grilled sausage & cold beer in an 80 person, wood-fired sauna ... and nude waterskiing on the North Sea (when you aren't diving into the snow).

Ice cream floats made with Coffee Sodas (the brand went out of business about 8 yrs ago ... and after I drank up 6 cases of it ... I can't find anymore :-)

How about a good Lemon Custard ice cream ... hard to make ... rare to find a good one.

It's all about sensuality!

There was a place on I-10 a number of years ago called Terrys. Incredible hamburgers and shakes. We used to have a Stuckeys on the interstate, but it closed down.

There is still a Stuckey's on I-10.  I miss Terry's.  I miss Shakey's Pizza too.

My great-grandmother's struffoli.  I have the recipe, but it calls for kneading five pounds of flour and, for some unkown reason, it doesn't work if you cut the receipe.  So far, I've been too lazy to make them, but I doubt mine would even be close to hers.

My grandmother's coffee.  I think--horror of horrors--it was actually instant coffee, but my mother forbid me from drinking it and it was always a special treat when my grandmother snuck me some.

Spanking smoothies from this juice bar on Main Street in Northampton, MA.  I can't remember what was in them that made them so good, but half the fun was saying, "I'd like a spanking, please."  I think all the other smoothies had non-kinky names, but the spanking was the best. I haven't been back in years, so the juice bar and the spankings might still be there.

Which Stuckeys? The one between Vidor and Orange is closed (but I thought there used to be one near Winnie??).

How about Burger Chef? The one we had here was the last one to close in the state. I remember getting an extremely intense bout of food poisoning from there once lol....spent hours throwing up and listening to Pink Floyd at home.

I remember Shakey's, but I never ate at one..... here's a link that talks a bit about why it went into decline, but note that someone has disputed part of the Wikipedia entry.

Definitly marathon bars, braided caramel covered with chocolate.

Stuckey's is on I-10 between Beaumont and Winnie, east bound side.

I used to love to go to Shakey's.  I don't actually remember if the pizza was that great, but I loved the balloons with the little cardboard feet! I loved Burger Chef too.  The last one I ate at was the one on 11th where that mexican place is now.  I think they may have been the first place with a kid's meal that included a toy!

An egg cream (which has neither cream, nor egg in it) is not out of your reach, miss.  You just need to get the ingredients and plan.  Behold:

In a chilled 12 oz glass (really chilled - keep it in the freezer) add 3 oz of cold, whole milk (yes, whole milk.  No 2%, no skim.  You are making an egg cream, woman!)  Then fill the glass within 1" of the rim with highly carbonated seltzer water.  I make my own, in a charger.  If I know I'm making egg creams, I only fill the charger 3/4, so the carbonation load is enhanced.  I guess you could buy seltzer....if you have to.  Then, with a long handled spoon at the bottom, add 4-5 long squirts of Fox's UBet Chocolate Syrup.*   Stir quickly to froth it up, so you have a creamy chocolate drink with that incredible foam.  Serve and drink, quickly.

Tell me that doesn't get the heart of a Jersey Girl?

E.

(in the midwest, this is called a "chocolate phosphate".  But it ain't the same.  I think its the UBet.  See below.)

*Fox's UBet Syrup is a chocolate syrup available on the East Coast, and through specialty stores.  It is supposedly just like other chocolate syrups, but somehow, when mixed with cold milk and seltzer, it takes on devine properties.  I don't know why, but an egg cream isn't an egg cream with any other syrup.  I've tried Hershey's, I've tried Bosco.  It don't work.  It is one of the great mysteries of the universe, like solving the four color map theorem, or understanding why some humans are attracted to others.  Don't ask.  Just use Fox's UBet.

"It's the same thing," he said.

I miss Surge.  It was that bright green, highly caffeinated pop that tasted a bit like a virgin margarita.  Love it!  It would be nice if we could get a Sonic around here, too.

Edited to add:  The hubby says he misses Ted Drew's, an ice cream shop in St. Louis.  He says he'd kill for a "Concrete" right now.  I have no idea what that is, but he's saying it's like a Dairy Queen Blizzard but super thick.

We just had the prequisite hot dogs for our lunch on Memorial Day.  Conversation led to a memory of when I was a little kid (a really little kid), and Mom used to shop at this butcher shop.  The butcher would give my sister and I each an Oscar Mayer weiner, right from the case.  In those days, they had a paper band around each one that carried the name and logo.  Those were the BEST weiners, even cold.  I really miss them!

Dear Rumtiger, Ladies and Gentlemen;

The foods I do miss are;

Mother's chocolate e`clares, egg custard, light fluffy shells and milk chocolate icing,  that were the size of Subway's bread and 8 inches long.

Shakey's Pizza

Gino's Hero submarine sandwiches

Hot Shoppes chocolate cake desert with, vanilla ice cream in between, warm chocolate syrup

Gifford's Ice Cream where a banana split was in a platter size dish with huge scoops of ice cream hard or soft, generous helpings of toppings.

Big Boys

Ranch House-Steak House

Housners in Baltimore, MD - Known for their fresh fish and Maryland Crab cakes, large portions.  Double D diners now pick up where Houseners' left off.

Respectfully submitted,
Lady Hugs

There are two foods from My childhood that I miss, not because they are no longer available, but because no one seems to make them quite like My dearly departed grandmothers did.

My German grandmother made an Apple Kuchen that was to die for.  I have tasted several versions since then, and attempted to make it Myself, but it just never measures up.  In truth, I didn't like much of her cooking, but that is one thing I did like.

My French grandmother made heavenly Crepe Suzettes.  Almost every time I visited her, she would make them for Me.  Again, I have had these several times since and they were never quite as good.  Her cooking appealed to Me more across the board, but there was nothing I liked better than her Crepe Suzettes.

I'm sure I will have both of these treats again sometime, but I doubt they will ever be as good as My grandmothers' versions.

ok...this is the first time that I have posted...and wouldn't you know, it would be FOOD that would do it! What I miss more than anything else are these little meat pies that Tastee Freeze used to make...they were little half moon shaped fried pies that we would dip in mustard. Sold them for .99 for two with french fries and a drink...For awhile, another company made them under the name of "beefy boys" (yeah...try to imagine why THAT didn't last! lol) Now, I can't find them anywhere...
