As it seems to be another Night of the Zombie Threads I thought I'd start a new one.

This one is about food and cooking. Perhaps it can be a recipe thread. Or maybe not. You decide.

I'm not talking here about haute cuisine by any standards, but at the other end of the scale - cooking or cuisine on a shoestring budget.

I'm assuming that we've all been skint at some point, and we've all had to somehow feed ourselves during these times.

To give you a couple of examples, I know that I can throw together a decent vegetable curry for a couple of quid (around five bucks) or lentil soup.

So what about you? Do you have any cheap and cheerful dishes that you can fall back on when times get hard? Or was there a time when you were skint and you managed to somehow get together a meal and pull off a culiniary success?

What ideas do you have for budget cooking? Or even budget shopping?

Hoo boy, what a relief.  When I saw the title, my first thought was "a two dollar whore".

But now it turns out you were talking about food.  In terms of that, my idea for budget cooking is to grow a garden.  Great, fresh vegetables for cheap, and you get some exercise.

For company I use 8 pieces of chicken, bottle of Russian dressing, jar of apricot preserves and 1 packet of Lipton Onion Soup. Mix the ingredients, pour over the chicken and bake. Serve over rice. Cheap but makes a heck of an impression.

Stella, "knock up" is generally vernacular for getting someone pregnant... at least in America.  Occasionally it will be used to refer to the act itself, despite whether impregnation occurs.

Edited to add:

Advice provided to me when I got married and started my own home, was to always have a package of spaghetti noodles and a large jar (or can) of spaghetti sauce in my pantry.  With those on hand (plus some warm garlic bread and a veggie) for less than $5 you can feed unexpected company a decent and tasty meal.

Hello,

I am not usually on a frugal budget but there were times when I tried to cut down on spending and I found spaghetti to be the healthiest cheapest deal. A banana will fill you up and costs only pennies. Produce is also cheap if you stick with what is on sale. Buy in season and stick to only what is on sale and stock up on sale items. Roast on sale is cheaper than buying steaks. Oatmeal for breakfast. Tuna sandwiches for lunch. Pasta or roast for dinner.

Hope this helps.

In Britain, it means to knock on someone's door, or to throw something together.

Stella, I survived college on beans and rice for years.  In other years, I would make a huge salad and a huge soup on a weekend, and simply eat some of each for every meal.

A high quality haunch of venison can be made to look cheap by grinding it down and adding a packet of texmex powdered sauce.

cook? Well, pasta is the dagonian standby...there's so much you can add to it! We always have kidney beans, onions, that sort of thing, as well as canned tuna, so we can always eat. If it's tight going, bread, cheese, olives, caanned fish, no cooking required.

We keep chicken fingers and fries (and tater tots) on hand in case the kids are spending the night with us.  Chicken breasts drenched with Italian dressing in the iron skillet.  Instant potatoes for mashers, pasta, alfredo sauce, shrimp, discounted meats.  I do frozen dinners or ramen if I am by myself.  Get the canned veggies when they are on sale.  We eat cereal about once a day.  I do hot dogs if it is a catch-all (feed yourself) day.  We have to buy our water because the well water is not exactly healthy.  Once in a while, we go to Sam's in Longview to get some meat or large bags of sugar (we have a 25 lb bag of sugar on the table, just for fixing up fudge).  We get the 93/7 ground beef for making chili (after which we reuse to making Mexican foods).  Shredded cheese is a must in the fridge.  Once a month we buy the big bucket of ice cream, the vanilla/fudge swirl flavor.

We have to do this on about $400 budget, so I get the $1 frozen dinners.  If there is a special like there was for Thanksgiving (buy a ham, get a turkey free), we have the turkey for Thanksgiving and the ham for Christmas.

I scan the internet for recipes for casseroles and main dishes.  We try them out on ourselves first and if we like it, we invite my brother's family for a Sunday dinner.

Me too. And I'm getting mighty tired of it. I might break down and get one of those electronic voodoo flashy thingies under the sink to zap all my water before it gets to the faucet.

We got this chain called Savealot. Boneless skinless chicken THIGHS, five bucks for a three pound bag. I got a big pizza pan and just grease the bottom a bit and throw them in with some spices. They cook about an hour at 350 F. The noodle mix things are junkfood but oh well, two of them for like 1.00 ea. So that's $7.00 plus a stick of butter (.50) and a can of evap milk (.79) bringing this to a grand total of $8.29 not including a minute amount of breton salt and poultry seasoning, and the gas used to cook it.

Can feed three, feeds two very well, like heavy eaters. Given time and choices I would have introduced more veggies or something but oh well. It was easy to make.

One thing I haven't done in a while is to make slammers. This is simply macaroni type pasta or maybe shells or something with a meat sauce. Tomato paste or sauce/puree used to make the marinara type part, it's very cooked and spiced. In the plate add some grated cheese like romano, parmesian or aciago. Better served with a tossed salad. Cost is a couple pounds of ground beef, an onion, couple cloves of garlic, can(s) of tomato sauce/paste/puree and a little bit of Italian spices, oregano or marjoram, basil if you like it, rosemary leaves, and do break them up please. Plop it sown on the plate, get a shovel and get busy.

Also remember if you can get a three pound roast of almost anything it'll feed two or three people with a little help. Get a big pot and throw it in the oven, later throw in celery, carrots or whatever. Cost beyond the piece of meat is like a couple onions, a little garlic, a bag of carrots and celery maybe, even with rolls this should be maybe $17. This is fancy lowdown here !

Things are changing though. I noticed some rolls I bought. Kaiser rolls, $3 for six. Half a buck apiece and 18 ounces. Now, the quickest in the head way is to consider thrids and ninths. A ninth of 18 is 2. A ninth of $3 is the same as a third of one dollar. It's one dollar per every six ounces, which means $0.166¯ per ounce. This comes to about $2.56 per pound. There is meat that costs less ! And let's not even talk about cheese. Eight bucks a pound is not uncommon, that's more than Tbone steaks.

Cheap actually can be good. Even the Tbones for six bucks a pound, two people can eat for about $15 pretty damn good.

T^T

Deli, I do a version of that with French Dressing, a can of whole cranberry sauce, and the dry Lipton Onion Soup. It's fast, easy, no fuss no muss, and yummy! You get a combination of salty, savory, sweet, and tart.

Then there's always the cheap, easy, simply taste of Thai. Boil up any kind of pasta. Heat up 1 can of coconut milk and stir in as much peanut butter as will make a nice thick sauce, add a bit of sweetner (sugar, maple syrup, etc), and at the last minute, turn off the heat and squeeze a whole lime into it. Pour over your pasta. Rich, satisfying, cheap.
