ORIGINAL: tazzygirl What is so great about traditional marriage? Traditions are great, wonderful things... at a local or family level... not all traditions are so at a national level. Living in California, where this has been on/off the ballot several times, I understand where BOTH sides are coming from. On one hand, there's the issue of basic equal rights, where on the other side, it's actually not so much about "rights", per se (as many who oppose "Gay Marriage" do NOT oppose "Civil Unions"), or "tradition", but about the religious element. So to answer your question, it's not about "tradition" for many, but "holy matrimony" -- i.e., thinking is: "gay marriage" is a "sin", and therefore a violation of "holy matrimony". That's the issue many who oppose "gay marriage" (while still supporting "Civil Unions"), have with this. So it's not really about "tradition", but about "holy matrimony" (religion). At least that's what I've gotten out of the MANY debates that have taken place here in California on this issue?!!
