Okay.I am currnetly reading,and immensley enjoying Stephen King's new novel.I am an avid reader,and can retain most of what I read(though with the pain meds and advancing years I can once in awhile get charactetrs confused as to wat book they belong to....lol)
Spoiler alert if you are reading the book at not up to,lets say, page 381...do not continue reading
Anyway onto the issue/problem,I am at the point in the book where our would be hero is teaching in '62 and falling in love(so it seems ) with Sadie...George( Jack) keeps making referrences to how she resembles Ivy Templeton....and this is driving me batty,I don't recall,nor flipping back thru the text,can I find any mention of Ivy...she must of course have a connection with Al ( the owner of the diner ,and discoverer of the portal) but I can not find it...andi can not continue till I have an answer to this vexation.
Who is she?
Where does she first appear in the nover( chapter or page will do)?
Please denizens of Collarme help me out here...I am so enjoying this book,but I need an answer to continue...I do not want to be caught in the past(so to speak) as I keep searching for the answer before I can go forward....lol

Ivy Templeton is a character in the movie Audrey Rose(googled it!). Does that help??

First allow me to thank you hlen,I googled it too,and saw that....but if that is the connection I can not see where it is explained in this book.But seeing as that is the first answer I have received and seeing as I have nothing else (yet) to go on...I'm going to find George's introduction to Sadie...and see if the charater himself makes some sort of movie referrence.Could be I am jumping to conclusions,and assuming I missed something(apparently I did miss SOMETHING) with the Al Templeton character.

If you read a lot of Stephen King (I want to read that book btw), you might recall he will often make pop culture type references with the assumption the reader will know what he is talking about. Usually, to my memory, it tends to be musical references, but I'm guessing that since his main genre is horror, and "Audry Rose" was a popular movie, he is assuming that a lot of people will get the reference.

I remember the movie (love horror movies). When I googled it, I thought maybe the movie had been based on one of his books or short stories. The author of the book is Frank De Felitta, who appears to have been another horror writer whose career success pre-dates King's, so De Felitta may have been someone that inspired King.

The director was Robert Wise, who directed a decent number of horror films and had a specific "style" that earned him multiple awards. So King could have been paying some kind of "homage" to Wise as well.

With King, you just never know. So I wouldn't stress too much over it, just continue enjoying the book.

I think that is what I will have to do,though now that you guys have steered me towards this explanation I will make one more attempt to go back( why not,it is after alll the theme of the book itself...lol) to find where George first mentions a resemblence to Ivy...so instead of looking for Ivy,I am now looking for the first mention of Ivy in this new context...a narrower search if you will....lol,that is if I havent confused everyone yet....lol.
By the way LL,run do not walk to your nearest bookstore,I an a constant and discerning reader...and this book is so damm good.The Times put it in the top 5 fiction books of the year....it is one of the best books i have read in the lase 10 or so years....just fantastic.so far [:)]

OP~ I'm the same way though, I totally understand, I'll get fixated and just have to know things like that. I want to read the book now, too :)

Damm it,I found it and now I'm mad I missed it and misconstured it in the first place.My misinterpation sent me off on a wild goose chase,interrupted the smooth progress of this book...and led me to waste everyones time with this silly thread/question.
I could answer my own question here...but why reveal anything more,no matter how trivial,about this wonderful book.
To anyone looking for a good,long and enjoyable read...this book qualifys on all counts .At 900 plus pages it will keep you entertained for a good long while...even though you are flying thru it....lol.

Please take my advice.....do not WANT to read this book....go get it and read the damm thing...it is that good.
added to say...it will/could make one great movie too.

I'm also currently reading this and enjoying it though I'm only a few chapters in. King is known for making lots of references like this one you've mentioned. His last book "Full Dark, No Stars" which I loved had a reference in one of the stories to a bank teller named Rhoda Penmark. You may recall she was the "Bad Seed" girl from the classic movie. He seems to really love dropping in names of characters he's loved.......luci

Ok, now you are being a jerk! After all this I want to know what the reference is! I won't be able to get the book for a week or so. If you don't want to spoil it for everyone else, at least drop me a note on the other side. Patience may be a virtue, but not one of mine, lol.

Well the thing is I am not really that much of a Stephen King fan,not that I don't like him...it is the genre that I mistakenly place him in that doesn't appeal to me.I'm not much of a "thriller/Sci fi" sort of guy....and when I did venture into this genre I really like Koontz more.But after reading the Times review and reading the premise of this...well I just had to get it.Now I have read lots of his other stuff...like "The Green Mile" and the Shawshank Redemption (which was actually tittled something else as a short story...but I forget,something about Betty Grable or something)and of course that other book whose tittle I cant recall...yanno the one Nicholson starred in....." I'm Back " [:)]
Now heres the thing...I can go off on an author...if I read one of your books and really enjoy it...I will go off on a run at the local library...so I just might be reading everything King has written for the foreseeable future...though Michael Connely's new boog "The Drop" is waiting in my car for after this one...that is the other thing about my reading,as I approach the end of one good book I will actualy slow down unless I know what I'm picking up next,have to have the next read ready to go to finish the current one [:D]

I find King has really made this sweep of multiple genre covering (lol) the past few years..it's been really interesting to see him expand to some new, different directions than the first decade or so into his career.
He's a fascinating guy.

Well here is the other thing about him that bothesr me,and this is probably something that would not bother most others...but I am hardcore...he is a Boston Red Sox fan.Now in my world everything save Aerosmith that comes out of New England sucks...me being the worlds foremost Yankee fan and all ....everytime I see his stpid overbite mug at a Red Sox game I just want to throw my shoe at the flat panel [:D]

Oh, one thing I really like about ebooks is that you can search them, and in this case, find where "Ivy" was first mentioned. And you don't lose your place when you fall asleep!

Yanno,I have never had that whole"losing my place"problem...I know family members where that is an absolute fucking tragedy,I never understood what was the problem about "finding" ones place after it has been lost.How is that,by any stretch of the imagination.supposed tobe a problem....just find your aproximate place and leaf forward or backwards whatever the case may be.....lol.No big deal [:)]

p.s. I don't knowif I could wait for 179 out of 179,especially when at 900 or so pages a lot of people are going to take longer than the one week most libraries allow for new books....lol

Have you read Koontz's Odd Thomas series? It's spectacular!

King's The Stand (dated but awesome) rocks! (as a movie and as a book)
