Can someone answer the ? Please?

What question?

She asked in the subject line of one of the replies if $.99 per lb is a good price for ham.  Its not a bad price, at least comparatively to the price of ham that I am used to.  I don't usually buy ham though so hopefully someone else will chime in...

Is 99 cents a pound good price for ham. I asked 3 days ago. Sales only good for 3 days.

It was a safeway brand, I assume.

Since no one else in chiming here, its not a bad price per lb really - but if you haven't bought that brand before you don't know the quality of the ham.  Every once and a while I will buy a cheap ham and often they will have a lot of unwanted and rather unusable fat.  Often the better quality hams are someone leaner so you aren't wasting a pound or two on fat.

Then again maybe you could use that extra fat in the recipes others posted?  I've never bought ham much because I've never considered it a healthy protein source with the fat & sodium content.

.99 is a decent price, but apparently TFB was waiting for us to answer before buying and missed the sale.

So TFB, here is what you do next time:

Go online to the other local stores' sites.  See what they are currently charging per pound for ham.  If that one is significantly lower, go for it.

When you look at the ham, if it is in clear packaging (some are, some, like spiral sliced are not), look to see how much fat it has on it.  If it is really fatty, don't buy it.  If there isn't that much (and ham will always have some fat), then buy it.

DameBruschetta:

No hams are usually the healthiest protein choice, but they are SOOOO yummy!

ETA:  And if it is a fresh ham, then the salt content is negligible.
