When they need it, and can't get it themselves, they'll thank you!

If you have family aged 11 - 17, you might want to buy them a "Plan B" "Morning After Pill" kit, given they can't get it themselves after the whole HHS/FDA debacle.

The issue won't be that we can't buy it for them, the issue is it won't be available OTC.

Making you wait for a doctor's appointment to get a prescription is kind of the whole opposite of "Morning After"...

Oral contraceptives that can be used for emergency contraception in the United States table.

Correct. All that is happening is that they are not putting the morning after pill next to the condoms for sale. Females 11-17 need a prescription and older females just need to ask the pharmacist. I am not sure why Fargle thinks we should lay in a supply for our sisters and nieces. My link was to show that in an emergency, your birth control pills can work the same way. Of course you do not need the morning after pill if you are taking your contraception correctly. Also, you usually have about 5 days in which to take the morning after pill. If an 11 year old needs it, I would think that they need a physical anyways. It is not even legal for an 11 year old to be having sex, by and large.

And THAT is the problem. Kids DO NOT GIVE A SHIT what's 'legal'. They don't follow rules. They have their own lives and agendas.

As soon as a girl sprouts tits, every boy wants to fuck her. Sticking one's head in the sand doesn't change that reality. And if we continue to treat woman as infants, by making them show id, and/or get a prescription, then we simply don't respect them as women, and we also don't respect their RIGHTS to control their own bodies.

As our family physician put it, "Kids are snorting household products to get high, they are making meth similarly. they are strangulating themselves to reach a "higher" orgasm. they are stealing Lortabs (and, apparently in Delmar, Methadone) out of their parent's medicine chests, and we are worried about BIRTH CONTROL PILLS??? Sheesh!!!"

I have no problem with this.

Back in the day when you needed a script, I just called my doctor and said "I had a condom break; I'd like a prescription for Plan B please" and she called in a script. No appt needed. I imagine Planned Parenthood or Urgent Care clinics could provide same day appts for scripts as well, if one doesn't have a relationship with a GYN or GP.

What if you don't have either access to PP ( How many are operating in Kansas, for instance... ) or health insurance to pay for your doctor's visit, much less a co-pay?

Should a 12 year old be forced to go to the emergency department for a script for BIRTH CONTROL?

Seriously. This is something which should be just left on the counter in school bathrooms like condoms... Access == Effectiveness, and every barrier ( heh ) to access, lowers effectiveness, in a public health context.

I disagree. There are side effects - it's NOT as safe as using a condom. Leaving them around like condoms implies they can be used instead of condoms. This is Plan B - not A.

http://women.webmd.com/guide/plan-b

Plan B is a type of emergency contraception.

...But you should know that Plan B or Plan B One-Step is not as effective as regular contraception. So don't take it as your main form of birth control. And, it does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases. Think of it as a backup -- not for routine use. That's why it's called Plan B.

...Potential side effects of Plan B or Plan B One-Step include:

nausea
abdominal pain
fatigue
headache
menstrual changes
dizziness
breast tenderness
vomiting
diarrhea

Plan B or Plan B One-Step causes less nausea and vomiting than ECPs that contain both estrogen and progestin. And, you may be able to reduce any nausea or vomiting by taking the pill on a full stomach. Eating small, frequent meals over 24 hours may also help.

With Plan B or Plan B One-Step, you may also have some unexpected bleeding. It should go away by the time of your next period. However, it is possible that Plan B or Plan B One-Step may cause your next period to be heavier or lighter than usual. It may also come earlier or later than is normal for you. If you don't get your period within three weeks, get a pregnancy test to make sure you're not pregnant.

ER? Why not get a script from the Minute-Clinic at Walgreens, CVS, or Rite-Aid and then get the prescription filled while you are there. There is also the county Health Departments.

But yes, a sexually active female SHOULD have to go to the doctor/NP/GYN. They need their yearly well-woman's check-up and STD testing. And yes, if they are going to be using BCPs, then they do need a physicians care. They are hormones and there are side effects. They are not candy.

It is so nice to see that the statutory rape of a pre-teen bothers you not at all.

I disagree. It should not be readily available to 11 year olds. The directions could be misread. That could happen to an adult too.... but lets face it, an 11 year old has a higher probability of misreading.

I would get my daughter the pills. I would get my niece the pills. And I would talk them both through the process and be there holding their hands, ensuring any complications are dealt with.

I see your point fargle. I also see the medical communities point. An 11 year old simply is not capable of making this decision. The notion of a child that young being able to pluck an abortion medication off the counter.... just too over the top for me.

eventually in all these cases, the truth will out. So.......

and the morning after pill would prevent her getting knocked, its designed to keep her open.

I don't know how this squares with alaska, but we got the idea that Bristol was playing park the cadillac in the garage eventually.

If your daughter or niece at 11/12 yrs old is in need for oral contraceptives, the bigger problem is that of statutory rape/sexual abuse. That's why PP was getting in trouble for not reporting the abortions performed on these children to the police as they were aiding and abetting sexual predators.

She doesn't need oral contraceptives, she won't get pregnant from giving mr wiggly a car wash.  Its the other place they get pregnant.
