To be fair, a lot of those immigrants were prude Christians. I mean, were talking about people who thought that a woman showing a flash of ankle needed to spend some time in the stocks for her "indecency."

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm an atheist, but you don't need to be having a multi-orgasm before volunteering every Sunday to know there's something wrong on this continent when a fundamentalist presidential candidate can openly attack a serving President for his beliefs and not mentioning 'god' during a Thanksgiving Day message.
This continent was founded by polytheists and pagan Vikings, and atheism is the fastest growing belief system in North America.
End Rick Perry's war on freedom of worship. Fight against conservative attacks on freedom of speech.

ETA: what does being Canadian have to do with it? Canada was settled but much the same people as the United States and has it's share of religious kooks. Ever hear of Venomfangx?

Perhaps you mean they aren't running to be Prime Minster of Canada. Maybe so, but that doesn't change the fact that you have your own share of religious kooks as well as bigots, racists, idiots, etc (believe me, I've met them [>:]). I believe this is due to Canada being comprised of Human Beings.

I watched it. I did not see the "anti-gay" part. I saw a comparison of freedoms. If you are free to state that you are gay in the military then little Johnny should be free to pray outloud in school.

I'm not disagreeing with your anylsis of Perry's nonsense. I was merely taking Tantriqu's "proud to be Candian" statement to task becasue it seemed to suggest that her pride was based upon a false notion that Canada doesn't have religious kooks.

I am as adamant about freedom of religion as I am about freedom of speech but I qualify that with the equally strongly held belief that one person's rights end where the next person's rights begin. All to often when someone says "freedom of religion" what they really mean is "my freedom to deny others their rights because my god disapproves." I think Perry falls into that camp.

I do agree, though, that little Johnny has the right to say grace over his lunch before he consumes it without interference from the state.

On this I agree. I do not agree with school sponsored or mandated prayer. But if johnny and a few of his friends want a prayer over lunch, who is anyone to tell them no.
