Thank you very much for that explanation.

My pleasure. It's nice to know my past experiences weren't a waste of time (I worked for the Keyes campaign and I volunteered for the 1980 Reagan campaign).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

An individual poll is only as good as the moment it was taken, and the particular methodology, Tazzy.

Now if you want a real puzzler of a question to play with, check out the polling averages here and you'll see President Obama shows the edge against every possible opponent, except a generic one.

Newt may be the flavor of the week, or it may be that Republican voters have decided they'll go for competence over character. I don't care much for the man, myself. Hell, I had a "neuter the newt" sticker on my little Honda, back in 94.

He would be very easy for that 40% who'll vote Obama, no matter what, to hate, and we can rest assured the frothing at the mouth would be endless, but there is always the possibility enough of the great middle will decide they prefer a competent asshole, to someone who thinks a record number of people on food stamps is a good campaign topic for the incumbent.

The polls that matter start soon enough.

Its nice to get an answer without the snark. I may ask what others believe are stupid questions. Then I get cmail from others thanking me for asking them.

Im sure the opposite works the same way. When the Dems are running, they compare them to each other then to the GOP as well, yes?
That's been how I see things, yeah. I can't confirm since I'm not a Dem.

It doesn't make any sense, IMO, to select the most qualified person in the pack if that person can't get elected. That's the whole point, in this fucked-up one-party, two-branch system, is to get elected. Or so I perceive.

Hope you dont mind if I dont respond to the third paragraph. I didnt want to make this a "vs Obama" debate.

And, yes, I have been watching that link for a while. The first time I saw the "vs Generic" I was like... wtf? I assumed that it meant, basically, that the party was waiting on a better candidate. That is how it seems to me, at least.

As to why I dont know these things, with my work schedule in the past, I really didnt have the time to delve beneath the basics before. As I am waiting on surgery now, I got nothing but time.

Thank you for your response, Rich.

Then basically each party is nominating moderates who both sides will like.. and later complaining that they arent "conservative" or "liberal" enough.

Seems a bit silly to me.

Fair enough, Tazzy.

Rather than thinking of the generic as somebody still behind the curtain, try seeing that number as battle of ideologies instead.

Well, I think that the "outliers" in each party are doing the post-election bitching.
The whole point of a party, I think, is to obtain and keep political power. That can't be achieved without being as appealing as possible to as many people as possible.

Understand I'm sort of winging it here. This is all how I see things; I've never had any real exposure to the sociological aspects of politics.

It makes sense in theory. Each party wants to be in power, so they have to appeal to as broad a base as possible.

Yet, when they are seen as too moderate for that party, then they lose that base the next time around.

Sure, people in general might prefer vanilla ice cream, but, if you were to ask what the Chocolate Lover's Society preferred, they would say that they enjoy chocolate ice cream the most.

So this one being of registered voters would not be as accurate? And wouldnt likely voters also be registered voters?

Also, primary voters seem to be more active ,motivated and involved in the process then folks who just vote "in the big one" (as Archy Bunker pit it),the general presidential election.

This is the reason why the party in power always does badly in the following midterm election.

The activists of the party out of power show up and vote, while the folks who just vote in presidential elections stay home.

It happens to both/either parties no matter who`s up or who`s down.

Note to Tazzy, sorry for the derail,I had just finished watching the food-fight.....errr debate.

I loved the story of the 8 year old boy who put her into her place.

An 8-year-old boy confronted GOP contender Michele Bachmann at a book-signing event in South Carolina, and stood up for his gay mother.

“My mom is gay and she doesn’t need fixing,” the boy, identified only as Elijah, is heard whispering to Bachmann in a video posted to YouTube.

Bachmann initially says nothing to the boy, but as he walks away she responds: “Ok. Bye-bye.”

According to Chicago Now, a woman who identified herself as the shooter of the clip said the boy’s mother planned to confront Bachmann but got nervous. Elijah insisted they stay at the event to talk to the congresswoman.

“I was standing in line with Elijah and his mom. His mom was going to say something to her, but she got nervous and told me she wanted to leave. We were about to step out of the line but Elijah cried out, ‘Nooo!’ He grabbed onto her coat and pulled her back in the line, saying he wanted to talk to her,” the woman told Chicago Now.

This woman is a complete idiot.  How she ever was elected to anything is a mystery to me.

She was asked why gay couples cannot be married and responded by saying they can marry people of the opposite sex.

From your first link:

Bachmann was confronted by a high school student at an event in Iowa last week, also asking about gay rights in a video that went viral. “Why can’t same sex couples get married,” 16-year-old Jane Schmidt asked Bachmann. “They can get married, [if] they abide by the same laws as everyone else. They can marry a man, if they’re a woman, and can marry a woman if they’re man,” Bachmann responded.

Correct, but AFAIK the only pollster that exclusively uses likely voters is Rasmussen, which didnt produce the polls in question. Firm's explanation is the correct one.

Are you talking about likely conservative voters?

Because every Rasmussen poll is always skewed several points ahead of every other poll in the conservative Republican direction.

And explain to me how someone who is supposed to be an impartial pollster is constantly on Fox News touting his conservative views.

Rasmussen makes the rounds of all shows, not just Fox. And Rasmussen polls are "skewed" in that direction precisely BECAUSE they poll ALL likely voters, not just "conservative ones". Review their accuracy in the last 2 election seasons. They are at or close to the top in every election they polled with the exception of 1 state in the 2008 POTUS where they were 4th.

But why let facts get in the way of your partisan bullshit.

I like Stephen Colbert`s take on the "generic republican"

He even has him on the show.

One thing to note about any poll is they aren`t very accurate for very long.

I heard for example, that tho newty is gaining in Iowa,2/3s of caucus goers say they may still change their minds.

That,is significant.
