ORIGINAL: Sado1 I never understood 'slashy speak' either, got any ideas what that's about? Although I do not know how or why it was originated, my experience with BDSM began in the early 90's on IRC (Internet Relay Chat), where the common convention and house rules of many BDSM and related channels was to use Proper Caps/lowercase in deference and respect (and to help differentiate dominants from submissives) when everything was plain text only--not even pictures. The S/slashy style of speak was when one did not know if they were speaking to a dom or sub, or a whole room (the term channel was used more, however) which had both present. Any explanation beyond that is something I have no knowledge about, however. Since I've recently returned to the scene it seems this is not such a common convention anymore, but I still do it at times due to many years of habit.
