We ordered this leather coat, but the zipper is so flimsy it makes taking it off a chore (and embarassing if he's around colleagues, etc.) He'd probably prefer black, but this one was brown, so we're not terribly picky. I'd love to find him something similar. He says he's "looked everywhere", but I know you guys know even more places to look. Can you help me? We need a size medium in most coats. : )

Here's the coat: http://www.territoryahead.com/jump.jsp?itemID=335&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C4%2C25%2C0&iProductID=335&sortBy=Sort

Blushes, have you tried taking it to alterations and asking if they could just put in a new zipper?

(That may sound like a stupid question, but if he likes the coat and that is the only issue its really a simple fix...)

That's what I said, but he says a $600. coat shouldn't need a new zipper. : (
But with shipping both ways he may be cutting off his nose to spite his face. I'll bring it up once more. It wouldn't hurt to take it to someone and find out how much it would cost. (although it is a special zipper...not sure what they're called...because it has to be able to "unzip" from the bottom when he sits down in the car)

It would cost maybe $50 to get the zipper replaced...if you like the coat otherwise...

Yeah, maybe he's just upset. (well I know he's upset, he really wanted a nice new coat-and deserved it!) I'll try again in the morning. : )

On one hand, he's right, a $600 coat should not need a new zipper.  On the other hand, that picture is of a somewhat unique design, so if he really likes that particular style, he might have trouble finding another one like it.

I'm assuming you just received the coat recently, and have some time before needing to return it.  I would suggest you take it to a reputable tailor in your area and ask them how much a new zipper would cost.  The coat is leather, and a longer length.  So you need a tailor that has experience working with leather.  I would say you should be able to find someone who can do quality work replacing the zipper for less than $100.00.  Ask to see the zipper they would replace it with first, to be sure you like the quality.

You should have time to do this and if the price to replace the zipper is too steep, or you still don't like the quality of the replacement, you can still return it.  If the company doesn't pay for the return shipping, I wouldn't buy from them again.

Or, even better, take the zipper out and replace it with some cool ass buttons.
Nothing is classier on a nice coat than buttons.
Plus, zippers are cold on winter days.

And yeah, Nordstrom's has a wonderful coat section. Best thing bout them, and the whole company is their no questions asked return policy. I've brought stuff in there five years after I purchased it, asking about some minor alteration and walked out with a brand replacement-free.
And I wasn't even looking for it. They pushed it on me, wouldn't take no for an answer.
How can ya not like a company that does that?

Quick idea. Where did he buy the coat? Can you call them and explain about The zipper? Or call wallowa?

LL, I agree. We just got it today, so he's extremely disappointed, but it does give us time.

Kana, I gotta agree with the buttons thing, but I doubt he will. I did look over Nordstrom's selection and didn't find any of the longer type coats. (plus OMG have you looked at the prices?!!)

The style is distinctive, but it he doesn't really need all the pockets and stuff this particular coat has, (in fact, seeing it in person, I would have left out the top pockets altogether.) The length, and the faux fur lining and the casual(ish) style, I think is what he's looking for.

You're in Kentucky.   Got a Dillard's?  If he isn't attached to the style, but wants three quarter lenth, fluffy warm lining, you should be able to find it locally.  How about a leather store?  Worth looking.  There is also Belle's in the south, isn't there?  Penny's,  Sear's has been trying to up their game clothing wise.

You have the time, have a couple drinks, then go to the mall and see what's there.  Nothing to lose, right?

He bought it (online) from Territory Ahead (I'd never heard of them) The problem is that there were actually some reviews that mentioned the "flimsy" zipper, but we decided to chance it because it looked so pretty. I don't know what they could do besides tell us to send it back.

Right. I wish we had the money to fly up to Chicago or New York and do some proper shopping. *sigh*

Can it have the typical cape style collar?  If so that would make something similar a lot easier to find.  (Even sears has one of those but it is not as ascetically pleasing as the one he picked out.)  Its been ages since I've looked at these, but if he can look past what it would be around (everything is about marketing) you might be able to find something very similar at some kind of western outfitters.   Most of them stock (or used to anyway) leather dusters and they often come with removable capes (which would give him the look he wants.)  Without a cape the jackets are incredibly similar except that you may not get faux fur as a lining and the pocket style will vary a little.

You still may want to considering pricing out alterations if your return shipping isn't going to be free (and the leather is good quality and the general craftsmanship is ok.)  Maybe I am just imaging its heavy because  the similar ones I've seen are, but I would think shipping might eat you on this one.

Maybe try London Custom Tailors?  Last time I was in there they seemed to know what they were talking about and they should be relatively close to you - might be worth a call.

I'm wearing footie pajamas right now. And it's still not as cold as it's gonna get.

According to wikipedia  *yeah, I know* "Winter typically brings a mix of rain, sleet, and snow, with occasional heavy snowfall and icing. Louisville averages 87 days with low temperatures below freezing"

So yeah, it gets pretty cold. (not as cold as in the detroit/chicago area though!)

It's not nearly as heavy as it looks. You should have SEEN the box they crammed it in...*LOL* It was a box probably around 9 by 12 inches and and inch and a half high. I have NO IDEA how they got it in there. It was pretty funny, really.

Tell them that it's going to cost [insert quote] to get the zipper fixed and you'd like a credit for this or you are going to return the coat and write a bad review.

Good luck!
