Obama is really on a roll

While the bill never expanded the authority to detain American citizens indefinitely without charges, proponents said the legislation would codify court decisions finding the President does have the authority to declare "enemy combatants," as commander-in-chief and under the post-9/11 Authorization for Use of Military Force against al Qaeda and its allies. The administration, which has pledged not to use this power, believes the bill leaves this legal issue unresolved.

"By signing this defense spending bill, President Obama will go down in history as the president who enshrined indefinite detention without trial in U.S. law," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. "In the past, Obama has lauded the importance of being on the right side of history, but today he is definitely on the wrong side."

Its okay though, because he's not Bush

If only there wasn't a GITMO in the first place....

mnottertail -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/15/2011 7:41:53 AM)

Well, I am hoping he does veto the thing.  with a military budget of 683 billion and Iraq and Afghanistan running around 200 billion of that and us leaving Iraq the budget bill is 638, so once again the deficit champions of the teabaggers are borrowing and spending and destroying this country.  And typical assholes they are they will couch their language in the lie that this is a reduction in spending.

mnottertail -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/15/2011 7:51:59 AM)

But shouldn't we be embarrassed for the teabaggers (again?, still?), isn't that the larger story, many broken promises here, tacking shit onto a budgeting bill not really related (something they were not going to do), and the laughable asswipe of their much vaunted fiscal conservatism.  Their trampling of citizen rights under the constitution, after their much vaunted rhetoric about their uncompromising stand in obeying it to the letter?

Thats what the focus should be.

Of course you shouldn't be embarrassed for them, Ron. They're the ones doing it, and they aren't even bright enough to recognise that it might be embarrassing...

Are you referring to this?

Yeah, that wasn't quite it.  The thought of future crimes was the oped and not based on what he said.

Let me say it plain....What he said, the thrust is that W fucked up the evidence with waterboarding and other unconstitutional things that if you went to court with it, they would get a walk.........

No. It's not. It's atrocious.

I know you're being facetious but as a liberal/progressive sort I just felt the need to come out and say it since it seems like you don't know many who would.

It's appalling for the Obama administration to sign this. I wonder if anyone disagrees.

farglebargle -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/16/2011 5:04:45 AM)

I think if you're surprised by anything Obama does, you weren't paying attention when he telegraphed his intentions back in July of 2008.

Sanity -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/16/2011 5:13:06 AM)

You can see with your own eyes that there arent many who will

But you seem to be an honest and intelligent sort, so I thank you for being real, thats extremely rare here

Thank you for your honesty. His signature on this bill should make it obvious that there is no progressive candidate in this election. If you're tired of losing your rights to the statists, take a long hard look at Ron Paul. He is the ONLY candidate against these post-9/11, unconstitutional, dictatorial power grabs. Wake up people! It won't be long before our President can hunt down and execute American citizens without due process. (sarcasm)

jlf1961 -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/16/2011 4:34:03 PM)

What sanity seems to overlook is that it took a REPUBLICAN congress to get it to the oval office in the first place, I mean it could have been killed in the REPUBLICAN controlled house if it was so bad REPUBLICANS did not want it.

Termyn8or -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/16/2011 10:32:55 PM)

What JLF et alii overlook is that NO FUCKING MEMBER OF CONGRESS OR THE HOUSE SHOULD HAVE EVER VOTED FOR OR SUPPORTED ANTYTHING LIKE THIS EVER.

But whatever they do is OK right ?

T^T

Well if the repubs sent it to him, then he has no choice but to sign it. After all, we wouldn't want him to take responsibility for anything he does now would we?

Termyn8or -> RE: WH OKs GITMO detention of US citizens (12/17/2011 11:12:36 AM)

"Well if the repubs sent it to him, then he has no choice but to sign it"

Huh ? Let's just get down to it, they slipped in in an appropriations bill. So if he vetos it they can blame him for "shutting down the military" and/or "endangering our troops" or some shit like that. That's the way these fucking weasels work.

Second of all I would like to see what would happen if they sent this provision as a stand alone bill. There was a time I thought for sure he would never sign it under that circumstance, but now I'm not so sure. I think he just does what he is told.

T^T

Like you've been bitching that he does for the past three and a bit years, you mean?
That shouldn't be a surprise at this point.
