Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky demolish one of the central tenets of our political culture, the idea of the "liberal media." Instead, utilizing a systematic model based on massive empirical research, they reveal the manner in which the news media are so subordinated to corporate and conservative interests that their function can only be described as that of "elite propaganda."

Can't wait for the right wingers on this site to try to dispel this.

Cool. I love those delicious games of prolonging the anticipation. I'll get to the video when I get there, but if the standard is being to the right of Noam Chomsky, so fucking what?

Wonkville... Is that a word you use for people who can read, or who watch a little PBS, now and then? The dude is a famous intellectual.

Maybe you should try reading a bit of his stuff, O59. Here's a nice quote, where my position pretty much mirrors his:

"with regard to freedom of speech there are basically two positions: you defend it vigorously for views you hate, or you reject it and prefer Stalinist/fascist standards".

He's as correct or more so than most any other professor in his critique of modern society, US foreign policy and the immoralities in capitalism.

His enjoinder that to be born in western civilization means that from your growth, you are to make a profit for yourself or somebody else or you will go to jail or...just die, is correct.

He is correct that capitalism not free enterprise (two different things) has been responsible for either massive debt or poverty, disease, war and predominantly for the enrichment of the opulent few.

To be a socialist libertarian alone makes him a mixture of thought and an intellectual curiosity. But he knows power is held by money in the west and that socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor...will continue unabated.

I know who he is but you seem to mention him often, the way the other retard mentions George Soros all the time.

Neither are relevant or have any leadership roles in the Democratic party and rarely appear in the media.

I think more folks know about Dennis Kucinich`s wife than know about Chomsky. [:D]

All the right can do about such people is to just throw out names. All the left has is a very few with any real power or spending any real money.

But hey nothing says grass roots uprising like Exxon, Rolls Royce, News Corp and the Koch bros. actually throwing money at the little munchkins of the various Tv parties, to do their lemming-like routine against govt. (except all that serves...their sponsors)

During the five minute video, they discuss flaws in the studies showing a liberal bias in the media. This does not, in and of itself, disprove such a bias - it just means those studies were flawed. I didn't see anything discussing their own research or any evidence presented that there is no "liberal bias" in the media. Do you have a link to the "systematic model" and the "massive empirical research" which Mssrs. Herman and Chomsky used to arrive at their conclusions?

Chomsky in denial of liberal media bias is no less preposterous than Hitler in denial of facism.

Back during my formative years (say the 70s and 80s), I would have said that the liberal bias of the media was inarguable (not that I conducted any sort of study). Judging by broadcasts I've watched from the 60s, the 60s were actually worse. What was done to Barry Goldwater was beyond biased and was pretty much inexcusable.

However, now we're going back 30, 40 or 50 years. Conservative shows and programs abound, conservative pundits have their own shows, programs, and even stations. It might well be possible to argue that, while an individual station may be biased, taken as a whole, the media is more balanced now. So for Chomsky to succesfully argue that there is no bias to the media currently isn't beyond the pale. I was just hoping to get a look at the data supporting his thesis.

"Manufacturing Consent" by Herman and Chomsky is a standard text in media studies courses. (IIRC, it's been a long time since I read it) there is a complete account of their methodology in the book. Such accounts are standard practice in academic work.
