I've been mulling this idea over for some time.

Decades ago the mainstream of the Republican party was charecterized by people often called "Main Street Republicans" which was a short hand way of saying small town business people, pragmatic fiscal conservatives with no strong position on social issues. Today there no longer seems to be such a movement. Why?

Is it possible that when WalMart moved into small towns across America and destroyed the small businesses in those communities the mainstream of the Republican party died as well?

I think the GOP is killing the GOP. They've been lost since St. Ronald.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Of course it was St.Ronnie himself that,in large part, led them into that wilderness of mirrors.

99 percent of you people have no earthly idea what a Republican or a Conservative is or believes. In the end you will vote for Dear Leader. And get more of the same. And wonder why.

One thing I can gurebtee you is that I spend no time at all wondering how folks like you wind up with the candidates you do....it is so apparent it is sad.

Actually, I was a registered Republican until 2000.

I voted, proudly, for President Reagan and held my nose while voting for King George I, both times.

King George I did my head in though and I began to realize I no longer held the same views as the Republican party so, it was time for me to go.

I would vote for President Reagan, again if it were possible. He never would have signed a free trade agreement and he truly knew what "Shock And Awe" meant when it came to military actions.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

ORLY?

Reagan's heart and head were clearly on the side of free trade. While president, he declared in 1986: "Our trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets. I recognize ... the inescapable conclusion that all of history has taught: The freer the flow of world trade, the stronger the tides of human progress and peace among nations."

It was the Reagan administration that launched the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations in 1986 that lowered global tariffs and created the World Trade Organization. It was his administration that won approval of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement in 1988. That agreement soon expanded to include Mexico in what became the North American Free Trade Agreement, realizing a vision that Reagan first articulated in the 1980 campaign. It was Reagan who vetoed protectionist textile quota bills in 1985 and 1988.

Those 'Main Street Republicans' were not conservative enough for the new breed of Republicans. This new breed, is fanatically loyal to a bastardized version of conservative politics. Thirty years ago, how many Republicans would have had a black man run on their ticket for president? Or some guy that was an adulter? Or a women? Or someone that sounded dumber than former President Carter (in their minds)? Or religious fundmentalists that believe its 'ok' to torture and murder whole swaths of other people? Yes, thirty years ago, those 'Main Street Republicans' were a whole different breed of Republican.

They believed that working with Democrats and compromising on the issues would serve America's best interests. They would be insulted to see the current idiots in office handling things. More so, on such concepts as 'torture' and 'insulting the President' by comparing him to the worst dictators in history.

No, many of these 'Main Street Republicans' are either Independents or Democrats now. Some are even Libritarians. But we all know that modern day Libratarians are just 'mentally screwed up' Republicans.

Ken, it's cool you posted this, and I agree to a significant extent but you have a weird way of putting it. Walmart destroying the GOP ? My question is whether your particular angle here is that they do this intentionally, or this percieved harm is unintentional.

So many of Walmart's business practices are very hometown unfriendly and even dastardly when it comes to wiping out local competition that it is clear that they have had an effect.

However if the question is whether or not they have been detrimental ESPECIALLY to the GOP as opposed to the dems or whoever else might be crawling out the wordwork soon, I think not. To hurt the GOP, they would have to be associated with same I think. Peoples' perception is the only hurt that matters to a political party, losing votes. Everything else means shit. To them.

As far as Walmart's intentions I would imagine that they are for any President, as long as his face appears to them on a federal reserve note.

T^T

Great post, Kalikshama

When we were witnessing shrub doing the most insane, backward fucked up things that real conservatives would never even dream of and his band of mindless defenders backing him up,I was thinking,"WTF happened to the republican party".

Basically, neo-conservatives don`t have a foundation of principles.

They float.

Depending on the day of the week, they can completely contradict themselves, reality and logic and with a straight face.

Not sure what Walmart has to do with the GOP`s descendants into anti-American ideals, tho. They were doing that before Walmart became so huge.
