What Festinger wanted to study was the reaction of the cultists on the morning of December 21, when the world wasn’t destroyed and no spaceship appeared. Would Keech recant? What would happen when her prophesy failed?

On the night of December 20, Keech’s followers gathered in her home and waited for instructions from the aliens. Midnight approached. When the clock read 12:01 and there were still no aliens, the cultists began to worry. A few began to cry. The aliens had let them down. But then Keech received a new telegram from outer space, which she quickly transcribed on her notepad. “This little group sitting all night long had spread so much light,” the aliens told her, “that god saved the world from destruction. Not since the beginning of time upon this Earth has there been such a force of Good and light as now floods this room.” In other words, it was their stubborn faith that had prevented the apocalypse. Although Keech’s predictions had been falsified, the group was now more convinced than ever that the aliens were real.

Interesting article. I suppose these people had invested so much in their belief that they couldn't or didn't have the strength to admit they were wrong. It was probably easier, perhaps even comforting, to maintain their beliefs.

Perhaps the greatest thing skeptics have encountered from UFOlogists/conspiracists like yourself and Rule is a manifest childishness in the face of debate. It doesn't help address the credibility deficit amongst advocates.

I'm sorry, did you post some actual debate? All I can find is unsupported pronouncements and the usual disparagement of anyone who questions your good humored superiority.

Translation: Kirata got answers that he didn't like in certain posts and rather than just agree to disagree, by way of response he resorted to posting up insulting pictures.

I am sorry, Anaxagoras. I think that you are a genuine sub, the real McCoy. Such people have a different mental constitution than other people. My mind is nothing like your's. Where I go, you cannot follow. Just as my mind lacks what your's has in abundance, so does your's lack what mine has in abundance. You bore me and I have no interest in the continuous conflicts and misunderstandings that are typical of any discussion with you. That is why I have your posts on Hide.

Be nice to me or I'll tell hardcybermaster that you started an Astrology thread. [:D]

One of the things I noticed about Rule is his repeated efforts to bring sexuality into disagreements with the likes of Julia Oceania even where it wasn't even accurate. If I bore poor old Rule then it is a wonder why he continues to snipe at me witlessly even though he put me on hide a year ago (!), methinks I have upset him more than a wee bit... awww! [:D]

So Professor in your learned opinion the intermittent bitches, even after we haven't argued for around a year, which don't in any way contribute to a given discussion, are a symptom of what?

Well, I guess it's kinda like having a slinky around...

Most of the time you don't even think about it, but it's still fun to kick it down the stairs now and then.

Well I didn't know one is supposed to actually kick slinkys' but to interpret your analogy: in your ever so humble opinion he is trolling. That makes him a kindred spirit of yours in more ways than one then. [:D]

I'm sure this "chat" is getting tiresome to other readers so lets make an effort to end the thread disruption after the Ruratian hijack, and try to get back on topic if this thread has any steam left in it... Think you can manage that?

~ FR ~

I happened to come across something recently that reminded me of the legends of great figures who came down from the sky, or out of the sea, bringing knowledge to the people, and of the depictions of aerial phenonmena to be found in works of art that date from long before our modern era of "UFO"s. While many are clearly subject to a variety of interpretations, this 1710 painting by the Dutch artist Aert De Gelder, entitled "The Baptism of Christ," is unusually explicit.

The Wikipedia entry on Gelder has this to say:

De Gelder was born and died in Dordrecht. He was one of Rembrandt’s last pupils while in Amsterdam, studying in his studio from 1661 to 1663. He was not only one of the most talented of Rembrandt’s pupils, but also one of his most devoted followers, for he was the only Dutch artist to paint in the tradition of Rembrandt's late style into the 18th century. Having access to the vaticans censored artworks and literature following Rembrandts lead, De Gelder would paint such artworks as "The Baptism of Christ". This took the style of depicting hovering objects in the sky which was in many religious pieces prior to De Gelder.
