Status: offline 		WASHINGTON (AP) – Their isolation complete, House Republican leaders abruptly caved and agreed to demands by President Barack Obama, congressional Democrats and fellow Republicans for a two-month extension of tax cuts for all workers.
The agreement, struck after some of the staunchest House conservatives began to retreat, also would renew jobless benefits for almost two million people and spare doctors from a big cut in Medicare payments.
The decision came after an intense day of maneuvering in which the Senate's top Republican leader, Kentuckian Mitch McConnell, urged the House to accept the Senate's short-term fix and negotiations later on a year-long extension. Obama, too, chided Republicans for blocking something all parties agreed upon.
Then a pair of GOP freshmen — the group most opposed to a short-term agreement — pivoted and urged a quick resolution before the tax cut expires Dec. 31. Absent a quick agreement, workers faced an increase of two percentage points in their Social Security taxes, or $1,000 a year for someone earning $50,000.
"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," said freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., a former reality show star.
"An 'all or nothing' attitude is not what my constituents need now," Rep. Rick Crawford, R-Ark., wrote in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner. "We are now in a position…that requires Republicans to not only demand a willingness to compromise, but to offer it as well."

How did Republicans manage to lose the tax issue to Obama?

GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell famously said a year ago that his main task in the 112th Congress was to make sure that President Obama would not be re-elected. Given how he and House Speaker John Boehner have handled the payroll tax debate, we wonder if they might end up re-electing the President before the 2012 campaign even begins in earnest.

The GOP leaders have somehow managed the remarkable feat of being blamed for opposing a one-year extension of a tax holiday that they are surely going to pass. This is no easy double play.

Republicans have also achieved the small miracle of letting Mr. Obama position himself as an election-year tax cutter, although he's spent most of his Presidency promoting tax increases and he would hit the economy with one of the largest tax increases ever in 2013. This should be impossible.

I actually find the above statement a little horrifying.  IN light of all the issues facing this country and the world, that is what McConnell thinks he got elected to do?  Small wonder there is such gridlock in Congress with such irresponsible and misguided people in charge.

We, yadda yadda yadda, buncha crap ...natural born citizen, yadda yadda yadda bunch more crap... house of representatives, yadda yadda yadda and so on, bunch more crap....

While I do in large part agree with you and believe that it is indeed unconciounable for folks to be playing politics at this time....but(just knew there was a but didn't you)there are ideological differences between the parties...and that is the cover under which these folks play politics with the health of a nation.

But in this instance, the Republicans were willing to go against their "god-given duty" to cut taxes just to score a win.  We only got the extension of tax cut because they figured out it was a win only for the Dems.

Status: offline 		This is ridiculous.  Yet another case of the two parties refusing to compromise, and finally agreeing on a band-aid to avoid immediate catastrophe, with a promise to do the REAL work later.

My cat has more leadership than the House and Senate.  This is a preposterous way to do business.

There's no "increase" in taxes if they fail to enact an extension....it simply goes back to paying the SSI taxes as enacted decades ago.

That's not an increase...nor is it a heavy burden.

It's what we've been paying all along.

Status: offline 		Funny, that's the same thing many of my Republican have been saying all week.  After they'd spent much of last fall arguing that letting the Bush tax cuts to the wealthy was a tax increase.  Can't have it both ways, I've been telling them.

There is no increase because there was never a real decrease...only a deferral. Unless you cut benefits, which the Dems refuse to negotiate, then those deferrals and more will be paid in the future. Its a shell game the Dems will play until its clear to even the simplest mOron that SS will be bankrupt without benefit reductions.

IF it were really a stimulative deferral then it might be argued to be a cut. Unfortunately it isnt stimulative.

Status: offline 		1.  My pay check has been higher in 2011 than it was 2010--there was no raise, so obviously my taxes decreased.

2.  Try advocating to a social security recipient how their benefits need to be lowered.  Those people who have no other means of support because they worked low paying jobs their entire lives are obviously living far too high on the hog now.

Mathematically, this position makes little sense.

The expiration of a temporary tax break has the exact same fiscal impact on a taxpayer as the recission of a permanent tax break. They both result in the exact same increase in net taxes paid.

Exactly. Which is why the Dem talking point..including many on this board....that letting the Bush tax cuts expire is not a tax increase was total bullshit.

I'll take a little less in the weekly pay envelope for solving the percieved issues with the social welfare programs... Do you think the portfolio managers will go for it?

The pain is already shared. SS is a progressive transfer of wealth from higher paid to lower paid. But go ahead, ignore the facts. You always do.

Well, they're wrong there as well.

Letting the Bush tax "cuts" go away is not a tax "increase".
