Flat out, these doctors diagnosed this man incorrectly and were about to cut him up 'for sale.'

Brain dead and woke up 'from a coma ?' If he was brain dead, he was not in a coma. If he was in a coma, he was not brain dead.

"For days Schmid didn't seem to be responding, but what puzzled his doctor was that he did not see fatal injuries on the MRI scan."

"But he didn't have a blood clot in the most vital part of his brain, which we know he can't recover from. And he didn't have a massive stroke that would predict no chance of a useful existence."

These doctors better go back to class for medical analysis and diagnosis.

They werent close to "cutting him up for sale", but, yes, it is one of those things that, medically, cannot be explained. The brain is a remarkable organ. As in the case of Giffords, even Doctors cannot give an accurate prognosis in brain damage. Its takes a bit of time to allow that amazing organ to heal.

I am glad he had that time.

So right, some Drs are not equipped to make such decisions. There was a doctor in todays news in Nashville that did what you won't believe. There will be a huge lawsuit. Decided a baby would not live, so he threw the baby in plastic bin. Nurse came in later, heard gasping in that bin, and found the baby there. Here is the story http://www.newschannel5.com/story/16379312/doctor-accused-of-leaving-newborn-for-dead

I would want to know where the hell the nurses were during those "few hours".

Way to spread a scare story about organ donation. I hope if you ever need an organ you don't lose out due to scare stories like this.

Yeah, the story itself goes on to explain that they were about to do another MRI when the patient started responding.

Sounds like his doctor did everything right, on top of the asinine "cut him up for sale" comment.

What's scary is the they were discussing diving-up his organs from a man who...was not dead.

The doctors did everything right ? They were discussing using his organs and whether or not to take him off life support and for a patient that was not brain dead. There are no fucking miracles people.

What would be the real miracle would be for the US to treat life that its people were to stop paying twice as much per patient and dying 3-4 years younger. Then maybe the profit motive will take a back seat for once and that oh so sacred life out-of-womb, would be just as sacred at oh say, 20something 40-50 something.

For 'sale' was being a little but a little facetious, particularly in our incessant capitalist, profit-seeking culture. Profits costs lives here, when collective insurance...saves lives elsewhere.

Poignant how he could not 'sell' his organs but of course in using those organs, everybody involved can 'sell' their services.

(Schmid's mother said no one "specifically" asked if her son would be a donor, but they "subtly talk to you about quality of life." )

NOTE:
It says that noone had asked the mother if her son would be a donor. The doctors kept doing MRI's as long as there was brain activity. This is NOT preparing to harvest organs. This is planning a treatment plan so they don't have to harvest organs. Any time someone comes into the hospital badly injured, there is a possibility of organ donations resulting. Talking about 'quality of life' is NOT asking for organ donations. Whether accidentally or deliberately, the mother appears to have misunderstood. If someone is going to spend the rest of their possibly long life in a less than healthy state, the doctors are obligated to tell the parents or next of kin what to expect. This is what 'palliative care' is.

It appears that this man was not much closer to donating organs than I was when I signed my organ donor card and some hack journalist decided to write a 'human interest' piece and stuck a sensationalistic headline on it.

Irresponsible journalism at its finest and, unfortunately, the American public seems to have eaten it up hook line and sinker.

I think the news media made a big thing out of this for the holidays. The article I read said no one had talked to the parents about organ donation. The doctors were puzzled about why he had not regained consciousness but were not at the point of giving up on him yet.

This was not a case of years of brain dead come back to life.

What's scary about making sure his organs remained viable if he was a donor? Do you have any idea how complicated it is to keep someone alive if their brain isn't working?

No doctor or nurse or anyone else ever presented the next of kin with an informed consent form for organ donation. No harvesting surgery was scheduled and no recipients were matched. This whole story is scare hype about a set of procedures that saves lives every day.

It's too confusing.

The mother says:

Schmid's mother said no one "specifically" asked if her son would be a donor, but they "subtly talk to you about quality of life."

The brother says:

"It seems like we were being led down a path to plan for the worst and that things were not going to work out," said John Schmid. "The miracle, to put it bluntly, was that in a matter of seven days, we went from organ donation to rehab. What a roller coaster it was."

We always try to prepare the family for a worse case outcome, kalika. They had yet to make the decision, based upon the planning of another MRI to determine if there had been any permanent brain damage.

"The miracle, to put it bluntly, was that in a matter of seven days, we went from organ donation to rehab. What a roller coaster it was."

The guy made this up then ?

Actually I think people should be able to sell organs. I'm serious, the people who install them make all kinds of money, how about a couple ten grand for the family ? Place bids on kidneys, about fifty grand a pound for bone marrow. I'm really not kidding here. Those things you can sell while alive, and the bone marrow deal hurts like hell I hear.

But then the best tissue matches are from family, so I guess it's all what kind of family you are in. You fly in a set of lungs from a prison in China, you are going to be on immunosuppresive drugs forever. Which actually accomplishes the mention of the fact that organs are already sold. It's not legal of course, I think, but almost anywhere in the world money is more important than law.

Take an average transplant. Say fifty grand to take it out and a hundred grand to put it in. Then ongoing care for life, which should make insurance actuaries piss their pants. All this money gets made and the person who makes it possible doesn't get shit. This may seem crass and of course politically incorrect, but I think it's not fucking fair to the donor or their family. They should get a cut.

Notice I did edit though, touche' for catching me pre edit. You get two points.

Read the article. No one involved with the guys care ever talked to the parents or siblings about donating the guys organs. They simply felt that normal palliative care discussions were somehow about donation.

What article said that ?

"As hospital officials began palliative care and broached the subject of organ donation with his family, Schmid began to respond, holding up two fingers on command."

Who wrote that ?

The idiot reporter. But if you read the the whole article you will find repeated confirmations that no one ever mentioned organ donation to the family.
