What are the craziest diets you have tried in search of that elusive number on the scale?

lazarus1983 -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 1:16:10 PM)

It's been called crazy by others, but one of my diet staples is to jack my insulin up right after I work out. Drink orange juice, or eat a Hershey's bar, something like that.

Insulin is the most anabolic hormone out there. I know oly lifters that chug a can of pop after every workout. I prefer natural sugars.

OsideGirl -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 1:21:02 PM)

I didn't try this, but it was very prevalent on another forum that I'm on. It was Kimkins.

It was a 500 calorie, low fat, low carb diet that nearly killed a few people. It turns out the woman behind the diet was morbidly obese and her "after" models were photos stolen from a Russian mail order bride site. She ended up being sued and there is a class action suit against her right now, but she's still in business.

Anyone remember the cabbage soup diet?

Soyokaze -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 1:55:26 PM)

I've only tried one diet so it defaults to the craziest : p I ate less than I burned. Went from 215 to 130 ^.^ and down to 150 I didn't even know I had hypothyroidism (so it wasn't being treated).

Snort -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 2:03:45 PM)

When I wanted to drop a few pounds, I tried the iPhone Diet - it worked incredibly well since I eat to break up the stress of my work day.

It's simple: I just use my phone to snap a pic of the food I am planning to eat before I dive in. The act of taking the pic forces me to be more conscious about the decision to stuff that snack down my gullet. Cracked me up, but it worked...

Which actually only works for a small portion of the population. It certainly doesn't work for me.

Your body isn't magical. It cannot create matter from nothing. If it didn't work for you either you calculated wrong (either your metabolism or the amount you're eating) or broke from it. Losing the weight with untreated hypothyroidism was an affair in brutality. My metabolism was dirt low (it still is somewhat), but I still ate under it. It didn't work because I lucked out; it worked because I stuck to it and made sure at every point I was indeed eating less than I burned.

Oh wow, i heard of KimKims and when researching it i was like oh hell no lol.

Actually, weight watchers for me was the craziest plan i have tried, i was always hungry - but i can't knock it too hard -- i didn't do the meetings, i did the at home program when they used to send you a book and packets to insert in same.  However, through much trial and error, i have found the concept of low fat product advocation just doesn't work for me.

I know a couple people who tried fenfen when it was popular, 5 people lost over 100 lbs doing it.  Thankfully, they all got checked out and have no negative repercussions from it so far that can be seen.

i've done the cabbage soup diet. i could only do it for a week at a time though.

the weirdest has been one where you had to have ice-cream everyday, but then really strange things in the day, like hotdog sausages with cabbage i think, peanut butter (alot of it) in a morning. 10 crackers with something or other. it was just stupid and i was hungry all the time. i stopped it after 3 days out of the seven. basically it was just a very low cal diet where someone had though 'i know, lets take a few calories and make it as weird as possible and call it a diet'. i really don't think it would have mattered what you had put in the diet, it would have worked because it was so low.

Actually, you're wrong on all counts. I have a hereditary condition which makes me insulin resistant. So, it has very little to do with how much eat, but actually what I eat. So, good for you.....it's simply not that simple.

NuevaVida -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 2:42:43 PM)

I love cabbage, but I don't think I could eat it every day lol.

Or then there was the grapefruit diet.  I didn't try that one, though.

What makes me nervous is those who do those hormone/fertility drops (can't remember the name) - they lose a ton of weight super fast, but I wonder what long term ramifications will come from it.  You stuff yourself as much as you can the night before, then drop to 500 calories a day for I can't remember how long, while consuming these drops, then bring your calories up a bit....I know a gal who I swear is addicted to these and keeps getting them from various sources any time she wants to lose "just 5 more pounds."

I also work with a guy who's a diabetic, who did this without telling his doctor.  Just brilliant.  He passed out at work and almost went into a diabetic coma.  Probably shouldn't be eating only 500 cal/day while ingesting hormones while diabetic.

I'm pretty sure that works for 100% of the population. Basal metabolism does differ from one body to another, and the body can lower the energy it puts into base metabolism, often in response to a diet, but ultimately you have to burn more than you eat.

We really have only a couple of effective ways to make that happen: diet and exercise. Diet is usualy all about controlling our emotional behavior around food, and exercise is all about controlling how we use our bodies.

From a health perspective, I think there is general agreement that eating nutrient dense foods (not calorie dense) and staying physically active is the best course. As Michael Pollan would say, "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."

Edit to add: yes, if you have issues with insulin, you need to watch what kinds of food you eat. Still, the calorie balance holds true regardless. It's kind of built into the definition of the thing. Every condition that affects metabolism is only another set of obstacles (albeit sometimes huge obstacles) to getting the in vs. out balance right.

areallivehuman -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 2:49:37 PM)

Here's a crazy one I use:

No meat, poultry, fish, eggs

No sugar, honey, maple, syrup, fruit, juice,  no sugar substitutes

No dairy products of any kind

Almost guarantee you'll lose weight.

For most people its not a matter of how much they eat, but what they eat.  Ever wonder why so many of the poor are over weight?  Rick Santorum would say having fat poor people would be a reason to end food stamps--in reality it is an excellent reason to increase food stamp allotment.  The poor can not afford fresh fruits and vegetables; they can not afford better cuts of meats and quality seafood is usually off the table.  Poor people fill up on grains and fatty foods.

a girl i worked with was banging on about those drops. personally i don't see the point in taking something if you can only eat 500 calories a day anyway. at 500 cals a day everyone should be able to lose weight to a point until the body hits starvation mode. binging for a couple of days would kick start the metabolisum again and back to 500 cals a day. no need for the hormones as i see it.

it's certainly something i would stay away from for sure.

I'll agree that it plays a role. Yes, if I eat 3500 calories a day, it's not going to make a difference what I do. But, the reality is that at 1500 calories a day, it comes down to my food choices, not the amount of food.

tazzygirl -> RE: Crazy Diets (12/30/2011 3:18:10 PM)

Lets see....

I tried medifast... those shakes that caused so many problems...

Grapefruit

Cabbage

Slimfast

Deal a meal.. that was possibly the easiet as in remembering what you ate and what you could still eat

Low carb, the original, many called it the Mayo Clinic diet... where you had to pee on sticks to check for ketones.

Hypnosis (tried that for smoking too.. didnt work for either)

And then there was one where you could eat all the eggs you wanted.... sorta like the grapefruit diet. I think almost every food has had its name inserted into that diet mix.

Lol, yep, I can agree with that completely and somehow I will STILL have a second piece of pie for dinner tonight! (Does that make me a fake?)

Oh, yeah, I did a sympathy diet with a gf once. Some dark powder was magically turned into a "shake" for breakfast. The resulting intense pain in my gut just totally got rid of my appetite for the rest of the day. And the massive gas emissions got rid of my gf for the rest of the night.

But, hey! I lost weight. Single and thin...
