2 are members, 2 are not. Burning the flag is completely legal. Burning without a permit in some states may not be a big deal, it is in the south.

Did the movement approve and promote the burning? I dont believe they did. But the actions of one OWS reflects as much on the OWS as the actions of one Tea Party member reflects upon that group, ect ect ect. Might be best for people to remember that what comes around goes around... on both sides.

The four broke the law...( lol ... couldnt believe how close they were to the police station). But, regardless, they broke the law, they got caught, they got their wrists slapped, paid their fines, and now they are out. I read somewhere that the Occupy group there "disowned" this part of the movement.

I personally believe everyone is caught up in the "skirmishes" and forgetting about the "war".

I do happen to believe people do things on their own as well as part of the group

And.... that makes an insult to many working Americans OK. You really want to hold up the tea party as an equal example of the occupy movement?

Tell me what do you think of the tea party....now can you see where the radicals in the OWS movement are alienating working class Americans?

Butch, you need to read my post a few more times.

Where is the insult?

now can you see where the radicals in the OWS movement are alienating working class Americans?

Sorry Butch, your opinion is they are... from what I am hearing from people on the street, they are not. Again, just because you dont like it doesnt mean its bad, or that everyone will agree with you.

I hope by the time you read my next post, you have a better understanding.

The insult is not yours... it is the assholes burning the flag...and I also prefaced my posts with if...but I do think it is much better than even chance that they were part of the movement... If not…there should have been a stronger public denial from the protesters at the outrage.

ps...I do think the majority of the 99 percent will not think burning the American flag represents their feelings on the issues…do you?

I have no issue with them carrying out their constitutional right to burn a flag. Would I prefer that it wasnt a protected right of protest? No. Why? Because people sit up and take notice. It is an action that states "I am pissed off at my country!" And it says it loud and clear. Every man and woman in the military is there to protect these 4 men their right to burn that flag.

I understand that you do not like it. That is your right. But there is no insult in the act. Its an act against the government, not against the men and women who serve under that flag.

I think you are wrong... burning the flag is looked down upon by the majority as radical...especially when supposedly representing their interests as you are forever telling me.

It is not about if they have the right but is it right...when the movement should be trying to gain support?

United States

The flag of the United States is sometimes symbolically burnt, often in protest of the policies of the American government, both within the country and abroad. The United States Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), and reaffirmed in U.S. v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990), has ruled that due to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, it is unconstitutional for a government (whether federal, state, or municipality) to prohibit the desecration of a flag, due to its status as "symbolic speech." However, content-neutral restrictions may still be imposed to regulate the time, place, and manner of such expression.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration#United_States

quote:

About two-in-three Americans fly the flag. Nearly three-in-four say flag burning should be illegal. Roughly half say it should be unconstitutional.

But despite these protective instincts, there's been no public clamor demanding that Congress take steps to defend Old Glory against burners and desecrators.

In a nationwide Fox News survey taken earlier this month, flag-burning ranked a distant last among five issues tested as priorities for Congress this summer. Iraq was first at 35%, followed by gas prices (28%), immigration (26%) and same sex marriage (5%). Not even one percent of voters said that a flag burning amendment should be Congress's top priority.

FR-

First they burn the "stars and stripes," then they hoist the "hammer and sickle." Then the socialist movement is shown for what it is.

Don't need "proof" as I'm not putting forth a "theory." I'm simply agreeing with those here who said that when gaining support for a movement in America...burning the flag (which represents what you claim to be trying to get support for) is probably a bad idea.

In addition, due to the loose "demands" of these lunatics....socialism seems right up their alley.

they have been burning the flag for years. Im sorry, gentlemen. You cant preach the "first right" amendment on one issue, then defame it on another.

If you think a bunch of hippies burning bras and flags represented the views of America in the 60's and 70's you would be wrong again... Almost 40,000 men and women died, their caskets covered, and flag presented to their grieving relatives. Americans that burned flags then were assholes and they are today.

I fought for their right to burn our flag but I reserve the right to say fuck um and anybody else that thinks it is ok to insult those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Again, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan ...

Bargert has been listed on Occupy Charlotte press releases as a spokesman for the group. But Occupy Charlotte released a statement to WCNC-TV saying the group is no long affiliated with the camp where the fire broke out. It also says the burning of the flag doesn't reflect its members or its message.

The Charlotte Observer reported that some members condemned the acts as "hideous," "shocking" and "disrespectful."

Tyler said late Friday that he regrets any trouble the flag-burning protest may have brought to the movement, the newspaper reported, but he stands by the protest.

I dont have to like what you do, but as long as what you do is legal, I have to accept it.
