defiantbadgirl -> American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 2:54:18 PM)

I received this in an email and thought I would share it:

MADE IN AMERICA-----------     I DIDN'T KNOW HALLMARK CARDS WERE MADE IN CHINA ! That is also why I don't buy cards at Hallmark anymore, They are made in China and are more expensive! I buy them at Dollar Tree - 50 cents each and made in USA I have been looking at the blenders available on the Internet. Kitchen Aid is MADE IN the USTop of my list already... Yesterday I was in Wal Mart looking for a wastebasket. I found some made in China for $6.99. I didn't want to pay that much so I asked the lady if they had any others. She took me to another department and they had some at $2.50 made in USA . They are just as good. Same as a kitchen rug I needed. I had to look, but I found some made in the USA - what a concept! - and they were $3.00 cheaper. We are being brainwashed to believe that everything that comes from China and Mexico is cheaper. Not so. One Light Bulb at a Time...

I was in Lowe's the other day and just out of curiosity, I looked at the hose attachmentsThey were all made in China . The next day I was in Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there.

They were made in USA . Start looking, people . . ...In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - most often, their job. My grandson likes Hershey's candyI noticed, though, that it is now marked "made in Mexico .I don't buy it anymore. My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico ... Now I have switched to Crest

You have to read the labels on everything. This past weekend I was at Kroger . . . I needed 60W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy -- was an off-brand labeled, "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared them: they were the same except for the price . . .the GE bulbs cost more than the Everyday Value brand, but the thing that surprised me the most was that that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - you guessed it - the USA at a company in Cleveland, Ohio. It's Way past time to start finding and buying products you use every day that are made right here. So, on to the next aisle: Bounce Dryer Sheets... Yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada . The Everyday Value brand cost less, and was MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years, at almost half the price. My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!   If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time!

Stop buying from overseas companies - you're sending the jobs there. (We should have awakened a decade ago....) Let's get with the program and help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the USA.
I passed this on .. .. . Will you???

MasterSlaveLA -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 3:02:03 PM)

It's not that simple.  More often than not, the things we buy are manufactured using parts/labor from several countries.

Lucylastic -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 3:20:30 PM)

My fleecy sheets, say made in the USA...

Lucylastic -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 3:38:23 PM)

I only send on ones that are only mostly funny or OMG WOW types.
Political, religious, begging types go in to the trash as soon as it becomes clear

DarkSteven -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 3:42:36 PM)

That hasn't hit Snopes yet, but it sounds like pure bullshit.  I tried to check it out.

I checked out Hershey's website and it is true that they have some manufacturing facilities outside the US.  However, the chocolate industry uses for its raw materials cocoa and other products that are grown in tropical climates.
I checked out the Hallmark website under Careers and every single job opening location was in the US.  I doubt there are any Hallmark-branded cards made overseas.
There are in fact Colgate toothpastes made outside the US.  Just like Crest is also manufactured in Germany.

The idea that Wal-Mart would have more than one department selling wastebaskets is fishy.  So is the implication that they would "hide" the domestic ones in favor of the Chinese ones.

I did a quick Google for light bulb manufacturers in Cleveland.  The only indication that there is ANYTHING to do with light bulb manufacturing in Cleveland is this: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/story/2011-12-28/light-bulb-changes-question-and-answers/52257408/1  Testing, not manufacturing, of GE bulbs.  That's right, GE bulbs.

I suggest you try to do some fact checking of mass emails before forwarding.

I haven't done a price check on things made in America, but Diane Sawyer did a special on "Made in America" and challenged people to buy items made in America. Where Sawyer got her numbers and statistics from, I have no clue. But, at least to a degree, it makes sense to buy in America and spend (and contribute) to our own economy. Here is a link...albeit, there are probably better links giving more info on it, but I did a quick google and came up with this one. I watched the special on tv , though. Made in America

Lucylastic -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 4:22:33 PM)

Thanks Steven the first thing I looked for was Snopes or some other debunk, I just couldnt be arsed right then to look it up any further.

tj444 -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 4:49:01 PM)

well, any previous "Made in America" campaigns didnt do much.. they were considered failures.. I guess it will be interesting to see if Diane Sawyer and ABC can turn an entrenched trend around or not.. regardless, good PR for her and her show tho.. hmmm.. I wonder where all the stuff in her own home was made..

Louve00 -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 7:50:34 PM)

Dunno...but I'd take a guess, unless she's been on this mission for a while, she probably has a LOT of stuff that wasn't made in the USA. A quick look thru my house revealed that I have been contributing to many other countries, too. She claims most households don't buy the majority of what they own from America, from tiny trinkets to big cars.

Consumers were powerful enough to ban the fee for paying their Verizon bills online. They also got some major banks to recant their decision to charge for using a debit card (IOW, a fee for spending their own money!). It'd be interesting indeed to see just how much this matters to the people. It's amazing what power the smaller man can have, if they stand together for a cause. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything! [;)]

TheHeretic -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 8:12:10 PM)

Something else to keep in mind is that the real origin of a product is often hidden behind a US based distributor. A friend nearly lost her dog a while back to bad chicken treats from China. She brought the bag around, and there wasn't a word on it about where it was manufactured, just that it was distributed by X company of Y state, USA.

The verizon charge and bank charges are a little different, i also think that was thrown out to the public to gauge reaction and see how much resistance there was to it..

Making a comittment to buy only American made products requires a lot more effort, you have to look at everything you need to buy and keep looking until you find that type of product manufactured here and it has to be of good enough quality & innovative to justify the price tag and price difference.. and as MSLA pointed out, many products are made from materials from other countries which complicates things considerably. And you have to be able to afford it also, sure Diane Sawyer can afford to pay more for US made but then she is one of the much hated 1% now aint she?.. I am not convinced many people will do that which is why that type of campaign has failed before.. I guess time will tell..

popeye1250 -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 10:22:48 PM)

I buy a lot of stuff from this site.

http://www.stillmadeinusa.com/men.html

I buy Wolverine hiking boots made in Michigan at Sears, those babies really last with a lot of punishment! And those sneakers with the big "N" on them that are made in Maine or Massachusetts I think.
Even if you have to pay more for those two footware items they last so long and are built so well and comfortable that it's really a great deal!
My last pair of Wolverines lasted me 8 years and I could have gotten another 4 years out of them but I "wanted" a new pair.
I put a LOT of miles on footware.
And that site above has some great socks that are made in Kenosha, Wisconsin and I get all my jeans from them.
I'm not so interested that my clothing "cost less" I'm looking for quality and I like to think that when I spend my money it stays here in the U.S. and helps someone get or keep a job!
That said, for a few dollars more you really are getting a much better bargain buying American.
Since HANES moved their plant to Honduras the month after D.C. passed "CAFTA" I just stopped buying from them.
And fucking WRANGLERS are now made in CHINA!!!
How many real cowboys are going to wear Chinese jeans?
So I don't buy from Wrangler anymore since that either. I get my jeans from the above site.
I buy my cowboy boots from any Western store here and I buy "Justin" boots made in Texas!

myker -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 11:17:29 PM)

We're leaving a much lighter carbon footprint when we buy products made locally, and even more so if the raw material also came from the US.

Sustainability: yes!

really? I buy the ones with the big N (new balance) cuz they make them in wide and for working out and walking my shoes cant be too tight. In the last 2 years i have bought 4 pairs and 2 of them have had the soles separate from the rest of the shoe... you must wear yours only on Sunday or something.. [8|]

tazzygirl -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/4/2012 11:51:07 PM)

New Balance is the only athletic shoe manufacturer still making shoes in the US. We’re proud of that commitment. We're proud of the workers in our five New England factories. And we're proud to say that 25% of our shoes sold in The United States are made or assembled right here.

Nike doesnt have a great history of being home made...

Moonhead -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/5/2012 4:20:02 AM)

Nike won't even put a mugshot of the sweatshop worker who made your custom trainers on the soles of the things...

Hillwilliam -> RE: American made sometimes costs less (1/5/2012 5:21:13 AM)

I'm in the midst of remodelling a bathroom and finding American Made fixtures was difficult.

A lot of them have this large print on the box mentioning a location in the US with tiny print saing "Distributed by" and when you look at the REALLY tiny print, it says "Made in China"

I found stuff but it wasnt easy.

As for sustainablility and 'carbon footprint', one of the best things you can do is buy locally produced food. Whether you get it at a farmers market or find a grocer that carrys it, it tastes better, has more nutrition and keeps a LOCAL farmer in business who in turn spends his money locally for supplies and such.

Indeed.

I buy the products I LIKE for the price I am willing to pay. If a product I prefer is made outside the country and a similar product I dislike is made inside the country.........guess which one I am buying.
