ShibsStories -> Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 3:35:07 PM)

Found it interesting with the loophole Randall Terry found for this. Apparently the Federal Election Commission ensures ads for political candidates cannot be prohibited within 45 days of an election, no matter the content. Primaries count. As a result, Terry is trying to put some very graphic ads up for whole families across the US to see. The ads compare abortion('murdering babies' in the ads) to slavery, and child labor, and show pictures of a black man hung up to a lamp post to try and drive the comparison of evil across.

The ads from Terry's site-

The anti ads article-

There is a big flaw with your headline attempt shock the forum readers. If you bothered to read the article, it says the ads will only air on local television NOT nationwide. This wingnut has limited resources and can't afford the premium rates for the national spotlight. The most likely groups to see these self-serving ads will be residents in Maine, Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri since they have primaries and caucuses centering around the Superbowl weekend

so Terry will be running ads on local stations during Super Bowl XLVI February 5.

Terry for President has begun raising money to run ads during the Super Bowl - or in the pre-game or post game show - in the 40 cities where Mr. Terry will be on the ballot against President Obama in Democrat Primaries or Caucuses.

For point of clarity: These ads will run on local markets during the Super Bowl. This is NOT a 2.5 million dollar ad that runs in all 50 states. NBC would not be required by law to run such an ad, because most states' primaries and caucuses do not fall within the 45 day window which requires a station to run the ad of a federal candidate.

Not discounting your reaction, just pointing out that it wont be nationally televised.

I watched all the ads. The third one airing will surprise me because, not because its inflammatory, but because its a lie. its not at any time.

Beyond that, people are not going to be happy about these ads running during a family sporting event. I have a feeling the backlash will be more than these stations wants to deal with.

Me too.

Edited to add:  I spoke to my favorite lawyer, who stated that if the ads are considered political, the stations have to run them.  If they're considered religious, they don't.  Could be one big fight brewing.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 6:13:58 PM)

I feel the need to say - from the outset - that I always want abortion to be legal.

Having said that, I don't want to pay for your abortion (tax dollars) and I wish that none of them would occur.

Apparently, this gentleman is a candidate for president. As long as he's within FEC and FCC guidelines, he's within his rights.

I guess some people would have an issue with the content but, I see commercials that I don't like, every day. It's free speech; again, as long as he is within FCC guidelines, it is.

I understand how public opinion is that anti-abortionists should shut up but, they have a right to voice their opinion, just as anyone else does.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

It may not be much of a fight, though. If the ad contains words like "elect" "vote for" or "Paid for by 'Terry for President'", it's fairly obvious that it's political.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

The 30-second ad for Missy Smith will air 24 times on local broadcast network affiliates across the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. It is so explicit that it's preceded by a 15-second warning that was added by the stations’ administrators.

Over gruesome images of bloody and lifeless premature bodies, Smith says she had two abortions but has turned against the practice.

I have a feeling this will be the way its handled.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 7:25:05 PM)

I wonder what would happen if people call the FCC and complain?

Have we descended so far that we must by law be subjected to the sight of bloody body parts but someone showing a breast which supplies a baby's first meal would be jailed?

tazzygirl -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 7:27:31 PM)

Are there FCC rules against what they are showing?

Im sure as it gets closer and becomes more political, many will complain.

Graphic gore?"

erieangel -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 7:32:06 PM)

I was looking at this guy for a while.  Though I like some his ideas, the staunch anti-abortion stance puts me off.  To me, it is almost most of the anti-abortionists believe that nobody had abortions until Roe v. Wade and that's just not true.  Overturning the decision isn't going to make abortions stop either--it will simply ensure that women once again are forced to go to back alley "abortion providers" many of whom were not even doctors back in the day.  This will result in women becoming ill and even dying after having an abortion.

As for Terry's assertion that Obama "promotes" abortion:  That is just an out and out lie.  During the '08 campaign Obama had said many times that while he is against abortion and would rather none occur, he sees the rational need for it to be "safe and legal".

Hillwilliam -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 7:36:54 PM)

I find it ironic that his website decries Sharia Law when, basically, all he wants to do is enact the Christian version of Sharia law.

Hill, the Christian radicals just don't see it that way.  America was founded as a Christian nation, after all--well according to them, anyway.

tweakabelle -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/11/2012 11:10:48 PM)

I'd never seen an image of Randall Terry before his face popped up at the end of these ads. I recoiled in horror. What an utter creep!

Millions of young children will be watching the game being televised. How dare he put such disturbing images in front of young children!

Personally I wouldn't let him near any child that I was responsible for.

tazzygirl -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/12/2012 4:43:08 AM)

He is on very few ballots, tweak

This is his way of getting around the stations. He feels if his ads touch on politics, then they will have to be shown.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Very graphic Anti-Abortion ads to play during super bowl (1/12/2012 6:18:22 AM)

FR

I have a feeling this is going to backfire on him. While he does seem to have a following who share his anti-abortion views, people are not going to be happy if the ad(s) air while children are watching.
