I worked night shift again years ago. The doorbell would ring, and I'd look out the second story window if I awoke. Several times it was the white shirt, black tie whatever bible thumpers. I'd go back to sleep.
Of course it kept happening.
So I finaly answered the door one day. Totally naked, totally casual. They didn't say a word, they never came back.
Why are they always guys?

I just read the first lines of the link and posted this.

Interesting story. I got that too on my own link from CAW. On a more contempory basis many of the Roman Catholic sacred places and even Saints were taken from the original Pagan communities. Lourdes and the Lady of Lourds is but one example of an ancient Pagan Healing place being Christianised. St Bridget (mostly associated with the Irish) is the Christianised version of the Goddess Bridgit or Bride.. Easter is a Pagan Holy Day. What is interesting, is many of the best High Priestesses I have had the pleasure to associate with over the past 37 years of being an Ordaned Pagan Priest, and who were/are Wiccan were originally good Roman Catholic girls brought upin the Convent system... Why they chose an alternative reason is immaterial byt they came into Paganism with a good working knowledge and experience of both ritual and the Goddess (Virgin Mary). Strangly enough amongst my closest friends over the decades have been Christian Priests including one of the deceased Roman Catholic Arch Bishops, a couple of Jesuits and several Liberal Rabbis. never once has there been any talk of Pagans burning in Hell for not converting to the Christian Doctrine.... Does Hell exist? Sure it does. Drug adicts are familiar with is when withdrawal gets to them.. Many Combat Vets have been to Hell several times......

"Yea though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death, I shall fear no evil. ~ For I was the most evil bastard there..."
(I have to bet that that quote rings a few bells and jogs even more memories...)

If you want to see people who suffer a living and very personal hell just get to know folks who are chronic pain suffers and ask some of them how many times they lay awake at night wishing for death or scream from pain. Ask them what it like to be tormented 24/7 with pain which can not be ciontrolled outside being comatosed and how it destroys their quality of life. Ask them how many have seriously contemplated suicide or even attempted it. Then Prey to what ever God or Gods you believe in that you never join their ranks, for if you do you will have joined my world and the world of people I spend free time trying to help just making it through one more day.

Iron Bear Sir, i am re-examing my own spiritual life at the moment. I do not know where i will fetch up, but wherever it is, i expect my beliefs to be respected -- not bandied about as if they were a joke.

As for Hell on Earth, i only disagree with You because the wrong P/pl generally do the suffering.

While i am no apologist for the RCC, i get angry at Protestants who feel Catholics are separate from Christianity.  Now, is E/everyone offended?  Can W/w stop annoying O/one A/another?

And for the record, I don't feel Catholics are seperate, however, Christians didn't burn people ... Catholics did. Protestants didn't. Baptists didn't. Methodists didn't. etc etc etc And frankly, those Catholics who participated in the burning and such were pretty glaringly NOT Christians.

I believe the ones that dress like that are Mormons ...

To my knowledge, and I might be wrong, young Mormon men are required to do a specific time of missionary work and going door to door in your neighborhood is a lot easier than heading off to Africa ...

What? are you mad?  Perhaps a hundred thousand people were executed during the witch trilas in Europe (some put the figure at the RIDICULOUS number of nine million, but that is pure fantasy).  People were most often strangeled or hanged during this period THEN burned, but quite a number were burned alive.  Of the countries that did this, the top three worst (in no particular order) were France (Catholic), Spain (also Catholic) and Germany - NOT Catholic, but Protestant.

There were also the Puritains in Salem that hanged people (though not burned).  And a WHOLE LIST of atrocities visted upon the Irish people during the Cromweillian years and beyond that included the burning of many people by Presbyterians and Anglicans (Catholics too).  I'll bet if you look into Byzantine history as well, you can dig up plenty of violence perpetrated on and by Christian Orthodox faiths as well.

I will DEFINATLY agree on your most important point though, from what I can gather from the teachings of Christianity, this is not Christian.

OK well .... Forgive me but hearing people, Pagan and Christian alike, comment about those awful times makes me think of black people who bitch about slavery.

I didn't burn anyone. No one I know burned anyone. Go back far enough in my family and people got burned. Do I harbor bitterness over it? No. The people who did those horrible things are dead. It doesn't happen anymore, it didn't happen to you, so get over it. Please don't lump all Christians or all people who call themselves Christian in with the group of people who did those things. Their actions do not reflect Christ's teachings.

Just like I never enslaved anyone. Never burned anyone. Never strangled anyone. Never killed anyone. Never enslaved anyone. I'm proud to be a Christian .... Why? Because being a Christian means I'm a disciple of Christ; I follow an example of love, mercy, and grace.

Note that I do not mention tolerance or acceptance ... I can love you without accepting your choices or beliefs. I can show mercy to you without tolerating the things you choose to do. And by following Christ's example, I have the grace to forgive you when you hurt me, offend me, twist my beliefs to suit your needs, make fun of me and try to make me feel guilty for actions that I had no part in. So yes, I'm very proud of my faith and have little time for people who want to degrade it.

Protestants didn't.

Oh really?
I suppose there were no witch hunts in Puritan England? And those famous trials in Salem never happened? And what about the anti-catholic laws under Elizabeth I?

Sorry darq, you are sadly misinformed. Protestants did indeed burn people, and not just in England, do a bit of reading on the Wars of the Reformation in Germany.

You are welcome to your beliefs, but if you expect me to respect them then you had better actually know what you are talking about...and you clearly don't, so I won't.

The closest I can come to a prayer to the Christian god.....

<clears throat>  Dear God....Please....protect me from Your followers. Amen.

As for why it's so nice to have Pagan friends?   Why, because they worship the ground you walk on.

Ok well clearly I'm mad ... As fergus so aptly put it. You will think whatever you want to think and nothing I say will change that. If anything, I'm just adding fuel to your fire. So have at! I'm going to enjoy life as a mad woman.

*sighs* You're asking the mad woman?

I stopped caring about this thread a while ago ... It really doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

Wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I'd place it here. Just struck me as nice that someone writing in one of the premier Christian magazines, would stick up for Wiccans.... guess not all Christians are narrow-minded bigots.

Wow I thought that was a really interesting story. I liked how they twisted it and everything. Although, I don't see the humor in it. It's just....a retelling story. But, when it talked about the "dying the next day" part, I think people misunderstand that. I think in a way Adam and Eve did die. You don't have to DIE, body ceases to live, heart stops beating, to die. You can kill someone with words, you know? Like tear them inside out and hurt them. Kind of like killing their soul. So it was true, they did die. They were good people, but they died inside. Their pure innocence died the minute they bit into the apple and rebelled against God. But other than that! I liked it!
