nice double-think/talk

you only want to violate their religious rights so you can fly down the road out of control.

AND

violate their right to travel without infringement

Again, making stuff up. You just like to argue.

I live with these buggies on the road everyday. No problem with it at all. I also don't go flying down the road: (1) my own safety and (2) not just buggies, but deer, raccoons, turkeys, skunks, cats, dogs, snow banks, tree limbs. My life is much calmer than that.

And, had you went flying down the road, you would have been in violation of the law and would have paid a speeding fine at the least, and lost your license to drive at the penultimate worst.

Because of the fact that I have some dear friends that are Amish, I was anxious to get to this thread and read the posts. (Smiles)

I feel what happened in Kentucky is quite sad...all the way around for everyone. And I can't say who is more right than wrong because I wasn't THERE to witness it.

However in my state, the reflective, orange, triangular sign (which by the way indicates a "slow moving vehicle") is attached to the back of all Amish buggies.
Although the Amish do NOT like anything that calls attention to themselves, the ones I know realize it is a measure to keep their families safe when they are on the roads.

As for the supposed "Amish house decorated for Christmas," I find that hilarious!!! (LOL) Where would they plug in the lights when they don't use electricity???
I believe the photo is either of a nonAmish home that is within the neighborhood of an Amish settlement, or quite possibly the home of a Mennonite (who does use
electricity)...although I've never noticed one of their houses with Christmas lights before.

Respecfully,
Ms Click

Those signs aren't JUST for the Amish -- they are for drivers who would hit them and maybe kill them or themselves (the drivers) all because the black buggy couldn't be seen in the dark.

Sorry but the Amish are wrong in this respect.  While they have their religious beliefs, when their religious beliefs could cause harm to others -- then its something they need to compromise with regard to same or pay the consequences.\

Personally, i also believe anyone walking on a road in dim light -- needs to be wearing reflectors.

This isn't all about the Amish or the walker, this is about the harm that hitting one of them because they weren't scene could cause the driver of a car who wasn't breaking any laws but simply utilizing the road but just didn't see them.

Living with that can be very damaging to people and the amish need to understand this and respect that if they are going to be on roads constructed and upkept by modern day conveniences, then they need to follow the laws of utilizing their vehicles on same.  To me, their religion allows compromise there, yes?  I mean from what i understand of the Amish, they shun modern day things that are made with or used by or use modern day concepts.  Well the paved roads are one of those modern day conveniences.

So if they are willing to compromise to use those roads, then this to me, is part of that compromise.

"It's about personal pride and ego."

Hmmm...that's quite a statement when you consider how the Amish live. Although it's not uncommon for nonAmish people to make all sorts of remarks against them.
The word "ego" doesn't even enter into their lifestyles...quite the opposite.

Respectfully,

No, badnarik (and if adopting his views, you) needs to make his own case, not be presumed correct and the inappropriate burden of proof placed on those calling BS on them.

It does, though, in this case. They are, after all, human, not de facto saints.

"I'm not following that law, and I'm not paying that fine, and I'm going to defy you rather than talking to you" is entirely personal pride and ego, by definition.

explain how their religious beliefs would ham some OUT OF CONTROL tank driver flying down the road?

Why should your out of control vehicle be THEIR problem and hy should your OUT OF CONTROL VEHICLE trump their right to travel?

Any vehicle that is out of control is in violation of the law.

All the Amish need to understand is that they have religious rights and they also have the right to travel.

People and vehicles out of control need to understand they are a hazard on the public common way.

cute---- but a non sequitur, you may not drive tanks on our public highways.  frivolous case is summarily dismissed.

Which is why we have laws against them, and those who refuse to obey them, or who refuse to abid by the penalties, will also find themselves jailed.

If their religious beliefs say driving out of control and being a public hazard is their spiritual path, they will find the law feels differently.

RealOne what the fuck are you talking about?  Have you ever driven on a road that has no street lights and in the dark its really dark.

What part of people who are simply DRIVING on the road not breaking ANY LAWS, did you miss.    I know how easy it is in that situation to not see something -- the road to my house, though a basic road gets pitch black in the dark and for the most part is mostly without streetlights, when i am driving on it and the speedlimit btw is 30 miles an hour, i usually go 10-15 in the dark because its very difficult to see REGULAR cars on the sides of the roads that aren't BLACK in color, god forbid there is a walker or runner crossing the street.

So quit being obtuse.  Their religious "rights" are compromised BY them by the very fact they USE the MODERN DAY ROAD.  So if they can compromise that for THEIR CONVENIENCE, they can compromise for the laws of that road.

no it does not in any case of "rights".  These are not political and civil privileges though your thug pals tried to convert it to such.

Duh. Indeed, there's no "right" about personal pride and ego. It's not a legal point. YOU want to make it so, because you are desperate to argue about something, anything.

It *is* however what's at work here. Going to jail was not necessary. It's a choice the jailed made.

"I'm going to defy you rather than talking to you?" I must have been at the movies, because I missed that part! (chuckling)

I believe this is a pretty isolated case, as I believe one poster implied awhile back in this thread. But of course, if you have a need to fault them for something, this would be a golden opportunity. (Smiles)

(And by the way, most of their settlements are surrounded by gravel roads off a main, black-topped road. There have been many buggy accidents, and even their children walking home from school have been hit by cars going too fast and being out-of-control... in broad daylight, no less.)

Respectfully,

And, in fact, the jailed are entitled to all these rights, privileges, immunities...they are allowed to use the roads, even in their buggies.

I wonder if they have annual inspections? I do, required by law. I wonder if the vehicles are registered. Mine is. I wonder if they are required to pay insurance. I am. I'm also required to have working tail lights.

An orange triangle? Hardly religious oppression. Not like it marks them as Amish or Mennenites...every farm tractor and wagon here has the same requirement.

Me too. Very isolated. Personal pride got the better of someone in this instance.

It happens to us all, time to time.

-------------------------------------------
P.S. I have many, many Mennenite neighbors. They are very good and very welcome neighbors.

yeh I am a very experienced on the road.

That is why I know for a fact that you people and your kamakaze tanks are out of control.

Hell my motorcycle has 4 times the light output any of these tanks you people drive and I light up a deers ass 1/4 mile up the road.

If you want to travel irresponsibly then take a train or a bus but do not infringe on the rights of others.

The only law I see broken here is the first amendment.

Any law made under the color of law that is in violation with the constitution is null and void in abnito.  Marbury v madison

If the Amish are "driving out of control," then why would a "slow moving vehicle" sign be necessary on their buggies?

And as for "being a public hazard?" Aren't we in fact ALL guilty of that just by getting behind the wheels of our vehicles???
