I believe there is a difference between welding and arc welding...Welding itself goes back a 1000 years or more. So a smithy could do it no problem.

You admit you do not know what you are talking about but post up anyway.
Why?
You have no clue what welding is or what a smithy is or why one would be on a pirate ship when he could be making real money on land.

That seems a common malady at the moment.

On a boat made out of wood miles out at sea, though? Some military vessels did carry a smithy, but those were pretty limited in what they could actually do at sea, and I'd imagine pirate ships would be more concerned with keeping a doctor and a boatswain on board than a blacksmith...

Moral issues aside, I'd like to point out that when America did it we killed 7 pirates with 7 shots nearly simultaneously. When the Russians attempted the same, they sent a battleship and wasted tens of thousands of roubles in ammunition teaching the empty water a lesson in complacency. Hate to be a patriot, but it's hard to avoid some simple conclusions...

Oxygen is not discovered until 1772 and acetylene not till 1836. Before this all welding was "forge welding" that means it required a forge and some big guy to swing a hammer at the exact right moment. This knowlede and equipment might today be equivilant to having your own paricle accelerator and the knowledge to operate it.

There is no reason why ball and chain leg irons could not be made in a forge on land, since the common way to attach these was with a padlock.

But, President Candy Ass wants the military to,..."arrest" those scumbags and then,.....bring them to the U.S. for,...."trial!"

These guys don't piss on them they kill them and sink their boats. By the looks of it with all those smaller go-fast boats this is certainly the "mother ship."
This video is probably not for the faint of heart. It's pretty graphic.
It reminds me of the times when we sunk drug runners boats in the Carribean in the USCG.

Re the cannon ball to ankle trick.

I don't know nearly as many knots as an 18th century sailor but if you give me about 5 meters of hemp rope and a cannon ball and your ankle, I can do a job that you can't untie until it's too late.

I do believe they were pretty indispensable on a ship of any size...but could be wrong.

I do apologize but this topic has reached the end due to personal attacks.
