Did they last very long?

According to Wikipedia, there are three left as of January, 2011. Also Wiki says in thier heyday there were 6,000 Shakers.

The clock may be ticking, then...
Thanks. (And thank you LaTigresse as well.)

I have not seen that around here, we have a large amish community, and I can tell you that when they dont know you can versteh some heinie, they dont speak well of any auslanders, when they are in their clans, one on one they are ok.

I personally find it funny.

You believe you know what we think. Have you asked?

As far as people messaging you. I have to wonder about people who are so spineless as to attack in a mail. If I didnt like what you are saying, I will say so on that thread.

I got one of those a coupla days ago. first time ever. The person found out via my reply that you can use language in an email that would get you immediately banned for a year if it was used in forums.

I haven't needed to ask! Many have come right out and told me when I post in a thread! Even you have! HA!
And yes, those cards and letters (messages) keep coming in!
Too bad I can't share them with all of you!

This appears to be asking a lot...

...but let's keep this discussion within the context of *this* thread, please.

These people are incredibly hard-working, and I doubt that most of you (myself included) could even begin to keep up with them doing the work they do in just one day.

Yes, they DO make the majority of what they own, along with many items that they sell to the rest of us. However, I don't see them using any brut force to get the nonAmish to buy their products ...(chuckling) unless of course they use different tactics during hay auctions...

Many agree with you on the work ethic, and the beauty of their products. But, I have to ask again, are they deserving of reverence?

I haven't even USED the word "reverence" in gosh...I don't even remember when.

No one's disrespecting them in this thread.

fr:  When I saw the topic title, I expected it to be about Amish teens during the rumspringa, the time they take to try out worldly things before committing themselves to a given community.

You should see the messages I get! I get called names I've never even heard of before...no kidding!
I had to message someone just yesterday and ask them what they meant. (Too funny!)

Well, drop it in this thread, please. No one has called you any names; in fact, you came waltzing in sword swinging yourself, over nothing. If anything, you got called on factual inaccuracies.

It's an otherwise nice conversation. Pull up a chair, have a seat, and get to know a few people.

Uh-huh. Nice try. I've known these people for years. The only persecution here is in your imagination.

But I know from long experience there's no use reasoning with someone who wants to be a victim.

This is just going in circles with you. Consider my responses from here to be the ones already posted.

Is a 21 year old male still within that time frame?

If you believe someone is above a bit of good natured ribbing, then you are using the concept without using the term.

Rumspringa is a pretty interesting concept, isn't it? (Smiles)

No, I think it ends at 18.

I'm actually not a victim in anything that I can think of...except I rather felt that way when my basement got 4 and 1/2 feet of water in it last spring...but that's not keeping on topic. (Sorry about that! smiles)

Umm... there's been a lot of sarcastic comments...although I'm not allowed to point out whom. And yes, they've been enough to get under my skin.

I may not have known these people for years, but I have seen how they treat others. Doesn't take a rocket scientist.
I'm done though. Say whatever you wish with no rebuttal from me.

There's no ill-will here from anyone but in your perception. If you're done, you'll notice the silence of nothing that ever was.

Oye ve

I was curious about rumspringa as no one I've ever known, or seen, really did anything like that. Apparently it's just a word for adolescence. And that each sect does not necessarily condone or allow some of the behaviour of others. That the wilder behaviour is more common in kids of the larger sects and less so of the smaller. Which would explain why I'd never even heard of it until a few years ago.

Interesting!

Clicka, down here in the basement, sarcasm and snark is a way of life. The mods give us different rules down here. That's probably one reason they call it "The Basement". There's all sorts of creepy Crawlies hiding in dark damp corners down here.
