I adore Hendrix, myself. He did some amazing stuff. One thing I would suggest is that you might be better off seeking out his second album (Axis Bold As Love), rather than Electric Ladyland or Are You Experienced. That's the one where he's showing off his songwriting. It's the one with all the ballads on it... Castles Made Of Sand Little Wing His best ballad (and maybe his best song full stop) was one of the last singles and never wound up on album in his lifetime, though: Angel I wouldn't recommend the two live albums he did to get out of a recording contract (Band Of Gypsies and Live At The Apollo), as they're not even close to being a list Hendrix: apart from the stunning Machine Gun, both outstay their welcome. On the other hand, the current collections of stuff that he'd left in the can at his time of death (South Saturn Delta and First rays Of The New Rising Sun) are lovely. I'd also recommend Radio One (a collection of sessions the Experience did for British radio shows), which might be about the best single compilation of his stuff you can get, and Blues, which collects his bluesy songs and covers. If you're feeling down, that one can be very effective, and of course, that wonderful warm voice of his was perfectly suited to that stuff.
