I think it is due to the accessibility to information with the internet and with the more open and accepting society we live in today. I wish i had learned about BDSM at an early age, but i had no idea until i was 54 LOL. I guess i led a very sheltered life.

I know that I first showing Dominant tendencies about 15. At 17, I crossdressed my boyfriend. I had no clue what I was doing. I'm from small town Ohio. I spent the next 17 years tying up the men I dated, teasing them, spanking them, head games and manipulating them. I never associated myself with any type of sexual kink. Three years ago, I started dating a man who not long into our relationship broached the subject of tying someone up. I was thrilled (usually I had to talk a guy into being tied up) until I realized he wanted to tie ME up. LOL. We had a long talk. He was Dom and explained the realm of BDSM to me. I was fascinated. Here was this group of people who did the same stuff I did and more. I've truly enjoyed learning more about myself and BDSM these past three years. I just wish I'd have had someone clue me in years earlier.

*grins* one of the places I lived in Ohio had a population of 871(2000 census). A friend of mine out here had just about that many in his graduating class in high school.

Yes, it is also noticeable that school uniforms are back in fashion with girls and boys, it seems there were some articles in the mainstream teen publications which basically said that the opposite sex were attracted to uniforms - grin - probably published by the uniform manufacturers.

BDSM is on the edge of society, the forbidden, the place where you can be an individual and yet be protected by the tribe.

BDSM is also a pop music and partying genre, the readily available costumes, the sense of being part of the 'in' crowd.

As to whether or not it is a fad, I think that 20 years is a long time for it to be a fad, I first noticed it in the UK in 1985, and it seems to be a part of the partying scene.

As to whether or not it is BDSM, well, I don't think so, as there is more to it than just wearing the clothes, for instance dressing up as a priest does not make you one.

I find it interesting that the idea really that anything would be necessarilly fad based. During the 50's-70's many of those who are now in their 40's-60's were rather young themselves when they entered into the life that they now know as their normal lives. While the internet does give access to information that many who otherwise at younger ages many years back would be all but forsaken in the mainstream. With the openess of sexuality more young people are also experimenting with all aspects of sexuality, more people accept that they are gay or lesbian at younger years as they are more accepted then even back in the late 70's -80's. Does that mean that homosexuality is a fad? or that the information is available to people at a younger age to allow themselves to not feel like quite as much of an outcast to know there are many others out there like themselves.

I've had feelings of the sort for as long as I can remember, I'm also one of those that lost my virginity at a rather young age and had moved out and was in a rather serious D/s relationship before many had even had a first kiss...but I've told my life story enough on these boards. The main point is that just because people are more aware of something doesn't mean more of it exists.

In juxtoposition to that, yes of course there are indeed those just trying things out for fad sake...but that's the same within any community or world. On that note though, it's no different than the surge of paganism after the release of the craft...and I could go on and on with examples of the sort. While the culture of the 80's with the rise in Goth/Industrial scenes things did really hit the highlight...but that was back in the late 80's to 90's and I would say much of that is rather out of the mainstream by now. It's much more likely that they'd be wearing ice and drinking hypnotiq if they're fadsters.

Just coming from another of these so called "kids". Suprisingly though I've seen quite a bit more misinformation coming from middle aged SirDomlyDoms who think that cause they did coke in club 54 they're part of the old guard....but I'll digress for now.
