Having recently returned to the forums after an absence of a few years, I had forgotten how contentious this particular section of the forums can be.

I have always been a supporter of free and open exchange of ideas and I believe that through this kind of medium, opinions can be changed and we can influence our fellow man.

I don't know that it matters but I will say that I lean right on certain issues and left, on others. I identify as "Libertarian".

In another thread, one other poster and I took exception to the title of the thread using a less than complimentary name for a politician. I felt I had some good input on it and that it is something that should be discussed. Toward that end, I will re-post it here (edited to not drag someone else's name to this thread):

I'll add something.

I think it is incredibly disrespectful (and a bit childish) to continue to drop proper honorifics from peoples' names and to make fun of their names.

I have no love for President Obama but, I continue to refer to him that way because a plurality of Americans disagreed with me and elected him.

Like it or not, a majority of my fellow countrymen bestowed a title on the man and that's the way it is.

As far as making fun of a person's name; it ranks right up there with "Crazy asshole righties" or "Lunatic Liberal lefties". It's a bit beneath people that are supposed to be debating in an adult forum (IMO).

Name calling is recognized amongst debaters to mean you have no facts with which to counter an argument and that you've already "lost".

Peace and comfort,

Michael

ETA: Xxxx, that wasn't just directed at you. It was directed at the righties that refer to "President O'Failure", also. It really was a blanket statement.

This sort of touched on the subject of posters "labeling" other posters. Surely, we can disagree in a civilized manner? Surely, if we all claim to be "patriotic" and we're discussing what we feel is best for the country, can't we adhere to showing the office some respect, if not the person who holds it (or held it, as it is generally seen as a "rule" that unless someone was thrown out of office by means other than election, they retain their title)?

What say you?

As always ...

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I agree with you, but not for the same reasons.  If I call ANYONE a ridiculous insult, there goes the discussion.  It could be another poster, Obama, a former president, a Congressperson or Senator, etc.  As soon as I call someone a shithead or something equivalent, then the insults become the focus of the conversation instead of the matter at hand.

Myself, I find the notion that one side should be expected to talk about the other lot's front men with the greatest of respect, while the other lot bandy about as much namecalling as they like a lot more offensive than dissing everybody.
If one side or the other isn't entitled to any respect, no fucker is. Good manners should not be applied unilaterally. Expecting that is taking the fucking piss.

I'm not sure where I recommended a unilateral idea. I don't think it is becoming no matter which "side" does it.

There are even some posters here who identify as I do, politically with whom I agree on some points but I won't support them, publicly because they have engaged in behavior that is beneath respectful, intelligent discourse.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Sorry man, Newt is a liar and charlatan from the word go. He had to resign in disgrace after to failing to remove Clinton from office while he was cheating on his own wife. He was reprimanded by 196 (R) and 197 (D) when he resigned and fined 300,000$. He made over 3 mil $ off of Freddie Mac and has the balls to complain about Obama, a man with 1000x the character of himself. I could go on and on about his record. Quite simply, the man deserves no respect from me so I will offer none to him. You are certainly entitled to your own opinions, but I will be damned if you are ever going to change mine. Don't even think about scolding me because all it will do is give me a good chuckle.

I just noticed a poster complained about "Newtshit" who has never breathed a word about "O'Failure", "O'Bummer", "Jimmuh Cartuh" or whatever.
It's hard to take any message from that besides the notion that you can't talk about his boys like that, but the other bunch are fair game.
Fuck that: either they all are, or none of them are.

No, I would never scold you. That kind of "name-calling" is not that to which I was referring.

Just as an example from your post: "
... after failing to remove Clinton from office ... " Why not: " ... after failing to remove President Clinton from office ... "? He was the President of the United States. Even if he was impeached, he was not removed from office in disgrace. Therefore, IMO, he merits the honorific.

I would not "scold" you for the kind of behavior to which I am voicing opposition. I would probably just not pay your opinion any attention (as I do with others, here)

This post was not meant to be a defense of Congressman Gingrich. It was meant to bring out just what I stated; a general "scolding" (your word) of people acting in a less than civilized manner when engaging in debate.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

As it is against TOS to change fellow poster's names, I believe it should be against TOS to use uncomplimentary nicknames for politicians.

Michael - perhaps you should do a poll on this?

I don't know what that would accomplish? I guess it's not an awful idea but, I send it backatcha: maybe you should? LOL

It's just quicker to type 'Obama' than 'President Obama'. It has nothing to do with whether or not I respect the office (and I do.) I just don't need to waste time on side dishes when the main course awaits and titles are definitely side dishes.

That's the problem in a nutshell, sweetie: another man did condemn him for getting his dick sucked, while said other man was cheating on his own wife like crazy.

"Obama" doesn't bother me, but I do object to O'Blunder, Newtshit, The Chimp, etc.

I don't expect us to use the same standards as journalists who use titles, but I would hope that we could muster SOME standards.

No, there's a lot of things I'm happy to say against Newtshit, but closet case isn't one of them.
he was definitely cheating on his wife while he was trying to get Clinton impeached. That's what all of the fuss about his bid for the nomination seems to be about, isn't it?

No offfense intended Michael, but you're keeping it way too real imho. The mainstream media refers to presidents, congressman and candidates by their last names only all the time. I shows no disrespect to do so. And for that matter every single one of them, including the president is a public servant, not a king, queen or prince. They work for US, not the other way around. Treating them with such deference, as if they were superior to us is showing them way more respect than they deserve. Of course if I met them in a formal setting I would show them more respect. I've met President Clinton, both Presidents Bush and was at the DNC is 2004 when then Senator Obama gave the key note address.

I don't know who you're trying to impress with this thread besides yourself to be honest. The disrespect that Newt, Mitt, Rick and Ron show for the POTUS on a daily basis rivals any disrespect I could ever show them in some alt forum. Believe me they get lambasted far worse on people's facebook walls on a minute by minute basis.

Then you haven't been paying attention.

But I get your argument ... as long as "they do it", then you are perfectly justified in "doing it to them".

And he was cleared of all charges.

In respect to the thread ... I agree that - in general - calling a political figure a derogatory name doesn't improve the discussion, although occasionally, as an occasional, humorous aside its OK.

Last names to me are not disrepectful.  Even the first names, occasionally, depending on the individual.  Newt's first name is pretty distinctive, and I see no disrespect in calling him that in a discussion.

I do find some people's outrage over some of the names that Obama has been called pretty hypocritical, considering what they condoned while Bush was in office, but I still do not excuse people who call him (Obama) names.  Recently, Treasure even asked one such poster to reconsider his language, and I've said before that we shouldn't do it.

I think we should just celebrate the First Amendment and grant that each of us is actually allowed to refer to any politician however we feel. I love the First Amendment.

While personally, I do sort of enjoy referring to Newt Gingrich by his first name, I generally just use people's last names without their titles primarily due to laziness, not out of disrespect. I personally don't feel the need to call politicians names, but obviously some people do. Some form of venting. At the very least it takes it takes the guesswork out of where they stand on the person.

I guess I'll go with Voltaire on this one, and say to those who "name-bash" - I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

A for effort, Michael. I'm with you. To a point. :)

I definitely don't engage in name calling of politicians. I've stated before how I feel it takes quite the set to put yourself out there like that for the public scrutiny of....well...everyone.

I believe in using proper titles to address people, but I will also admit that I'm sure I have not done it all the time. Not for any reason other than...well..no reason, really. Perhaps this will make me think about it more. I do believe I may have gotten lax about it lately.

(Hmmm....Is anyone else suspicious that the newly appointed Grand Exalted Emperor is advocating for the use of titles?)

:)
