Wow. This is amazing.

While I admittedly think that going to Mars, building lunar colonies, and space exploration in general is a super cool concept; it has absolutely no way of being funded - not to mention the government shouldn't be involved in space to begin with.

Also, Gingrich the history Ph.D needs to brush up: The Outer Space Treaty, singed and ratified by the US in 1967, bans nations from ownership of celestial bodies, including the moon. We are all Marxists in outer-space (literally).

Where on earth (no pun intended) does Newt get the idiotic idea that any one can "own" the moon?

I want to see the title deeds.

Amazingly, this idea has already been capitalized on.

See: http://www.lunarregistry.com/

Obviously, it's just a running gag, but it's certainly profitable. I can't confirm this, but I remember reading a while ago that the person selling these "moon deeds" made hundreds of thousands of dollars!

Could you please tell these people I have a wonderful fully operational structurally sound aesthetically pleasing bridge for sale here in Sydney at a bargain, never to be repeated price? (Terms: strictly cash only, payable in advance) Thanks [:D]

If you're saying that we shouldn't go building moon bases I agree. It's stupid and there's little of use up there besides a low gravity  manufacturing environment.
If you mean we should let financing scare us away from exploring/exploiting space, I find that utterly kooky. I don't think regardless of the cost, the human story ends here on this planet, a bunch of resource-less doomed fucks who didn't give up their SUVs in time.
No, we'll get out there and in fact, the first golden egg has been laid. There's a LOT of speculation that we'll be mining asteroids before you're dead at very least and just watch what happens first time they come back with 1/4 as much gold, palladium, or platinum already known to exist here.... But before that, we'll definitely go to Mars.
But I'd rather it be a strategy like this:
http://www.exploremarsnow.org/

Look me in  the eye and tell me you don't wanna take a spin in the "pressurized rover".

BTW - I am not saying that the addition of so much precious metal is economically wise. But rather that as with all things someone will do it. Just because it can be done.

I've always suspected that Noot is a lefty.
NAFTA, "global warming" (or whatever they're calling it this week) with that dope Pelosi, and a bunch of other things .
You guys can have him!

Newt Gingrich promises to build a moon colony by 2020; make it a U.S. state

This is so appealing to my sci-fi geek gene. I don't care about statehood, I just want a moon colony.

[sm=abducted.gif]

Damn. I might have to vote for Newt now! [:D]

He's been taking PAC donations from Jerry Pournelle?

While a 1967 United Nations document says that no one country can claim sovereignty over the moon, the U.S., Russia, and China failed to sign a more recent U.N. treaty to settle the question of who owns the moon."

?

If nobody signed the recent UN treaty, then wouldn't the 1967 document hold still?  What am I missing?

RadioCure -> RE: newt Moon-beam wants to go to the moon again.....and..... (1/27/2012 6:35:31 AM)

Honestly, this planet is polluted, sick (not unlike Newt's first wife). Knowing his persona, is it all real surprise that he wants to move on to another celestial body?

Moonhead -> RE: newt Moon-beam wants to go to the moon again.....and..... (1/27/2012 6:39:55 AM)

Nobody's stopping him: maybe we should have a whip round to see if we can get him a really big pogo stick?

The same place that Europeans got the idea that they "owned" North America, South America, Africa, and Australia (Hell, the whole world)... because they had the power to do so.  The Moon will belong to whoever is the first to successfully colonize (I sense a new mission for the Canadian Lego man) and militerize it.  It will belong to them for as long as they can hold it.

Cost, of course, is the major bug-a-boo.  Unless there is a decent rate of return, there will be little interest from either the private or public sectors.  The nerd in me loves the idea of it though.  Not only could the moon potentially provive many ores and minerals but it would be a great place for polliting industries (give ol' Earth a break).  It's biggest potential, though, is as a stepping stone for the exploration and colonization of Mars and the rest of the Solar System.

Because of the intial costs involved it would take a truly co-operative international effort to do so.  The optomist in me believes this could happen.  The pessamist in me, however, thinks it would be only a matter of time before there were the usual turf wars, revolts ("throw rocks at them"), etc.

I think the inner nerd in most of us would love to see it happen.
But first , ignoring the perils of earthbound civilisation is more important and just trying to hijack the real needs for the people who need jobs n housing and healthcare and happiness with the ability to chase that dream.
Pie in the sky is a wonderful way to ignore the stench of reality

How about using the same level of intense government input into creating an alt-energy sourced energy-independence-mission......much like the moon mission?

We could create an enormous solar power station on the moon and beam the power back to Earth.

Green energy AND a moon colony! Win-win!

Much easier and more practical from Geocentric Earth orbit.

Doesn't solar power already beam to earth?

The moon is in a Geocentric Earth orbit.

Do you mean Geostationary?
