The Breathtaking Hypocrisy of Julian Assange, Kremlin Pawn
1/25/2012 @ 12:07PM

... Assange, self-styled foe of government secrets and conspiracies of the powerful, is going to be a star on a TV network backed by the Kremlin. The same Kremlin that has done suspiciously little to investigate or prevent the killings and beatings of journalists that have plagued Russia for more than a decade. The same Kremlin accused of blatant fraud in December’s parliamentary elections. The same Kremlin whose control of the country’s broadcast media allowed it to suppress coverage of the massive protests mounted in response to that fraud. The same Kremlin whose embrace of corruption led to Russia being named “the world’s most corrupt major economy” by Transparency International in 2011.

And so on. That Kremlin is Julian Assange’s new patron. The same Julian Assange who accused President Obama of putting “a chill across investigative journalism” by prosecuting Army leaker Bradley Manning.

Actually, though, maybe it makes sense. After all, Assange has said “it’s an international disgrace that so few western journalists have been killed in the course of duty, or have been arrested in the course of duty.” Russian journalists certainly aren’t disgracing themselves in that regard: They’ve been dying by the dozens, and their murders are seldom solved: Only three of the 33 murders of journalists committed in Russia since 1993 have been solved, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

In November 2010, in response to reports that Wikileaks was on the verge of releasing documents that would incriminate powerful Russian politicians and companies, Assange told my colleague Andy Greenberg that “we have material on many business and governments, including in Russia.” As is frequently the case with Assange, no such documents have ever emerged. Anyone want to bet on the chances that’ll ever happen now?

But he's only interested in getting The Truth out to the public .....[8|]

Judging by the way he went on in England when fighting extradition to Sweden (yes folks, that evil puppet nation under the iron fist of US imperialism) this is the sort of reality I get the sense he imagines himself in:

This is the reality he would face in Sweden:

tweakabelle -> RE: Julian Assange (from Wikileaks): "Hero" (1/26/2012 10:00:10 PM)

The proposition that a journalist can be condemned, in advance, for allegedly compromising the integrity of the news material he is presenting solely because of the flaws of one the "backers" of the media platform he is broadcasting on, is too absurd to be taken seriously.

If in doubt, apply it to FOX-TV taking into account the moral ethical and legal shortcomings of Fox's "backers" ie News Corp and that paragon of moral integrity Rupert Murdoch.

TheHeretic -> RE: Julian Assange (from Wikileaks): "Hero" (1/26/2012 10:19:04 PM)

Except that is pretty much the standard that gets applied to Fox News, and their commentators, and I don't think Murdoch has a history of murdering the competition in any sort of literal way.

But please, by all means, stick with the conversation. I want to to see you rationalizing Russian free speech as some sort of proud ideal over my coffee in the morning.

tj444 -> RE: Julian Assange (from Wikileaks): "Hero" (1/26/2012 10:29:21 PM)

imo, its probably got more to do with protecting the info he has and it being located on servers outside of the very long arm of the US govt.. He has had to move his info/servers/website before.. That is just my impression/opinion, of course..

tweakabelle -> RE: Julian Assange (from Wikileaks): "Hero" (1/26/2012 10:33:58 PM)

Sorry TheHeretic. Flat wrong. The comparison you advance is invalid - apples and oranges.

Perhaps you failed to notice the phrase "in advance" in my post. I did put it into italics just to emphasise it. Fox gets criticised (justly) for its lamentable current content.

Assange has yet to produce any content for his proposed show, yet his future (currently non-existent) output is already being criticised. As I stated above: "too absurd to be taken seriously".

TheHeretic -> RE: Julian Assange (from Wikileaks): "Hero" (1/26/2012 11:23:51 PM)

Nonsense, Tweak. Fox hires somebody, that person gets thrashed before they ever get on the air, and if you want to see the Democrats start spraying saliva and venom, just suggest that anybody who cares has already seen every Simpsons rerun two or three times anyway, and Fox should start an evening network newscast in the time slot, on the broadcast channels.

Someone please give me a wake-up call when the Assange and flood-pinging Anonami is over I'm hitting the hay. Firm thanks for the sleep inducer WikiLeaks is second only to ether in  terms of sheep counting alternatives.[8D]

“you’re all screwed” (muah ha ha) - Julian Assange when he was passing on the bad news that some companies are apparently selling information obtained by monitoring people’s mobile phones and computers. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/1201/breaking39.html

Well yeah, all good Americans should be incensed over this.

I mean, the least he could have done was to find instead backing from, say, Saudi Arabia, home to and active supporter of the most radical sect of Islam, the Wahhabi, fount of an abundance of terrorist ideology (and action), with whom the US has an excellent relationship, or perhaps one of those Southern African dictatorships to whom we sell bazillions of $ in weaponry.

So yeah, damn that freakin' hypocrite.

Truly breathtaking.

This guy is a dangerous idiot.
Why hasn't the CIA or,..."No Such Agency" brought him to room temperature?

Edwynn -> RE: Julian Assange (from Wikileaks): "Hero" (1/28/2012 5:54:50 AM)

Just what is it that Assange did that was so dangerous? The Bush administration was far more dangerous and harmful to US interests in lying about Iraq, then blowing the cover of CIA officer Valerie Plame and her under cover operations.

As far as the CIA bringing Assange 'to room temperature' what do you think the rape charges are about? They (CIA) sent a woman to seduce him and then claim rape, convincing another Assange gf to claim 'rape' also, well after such alleged incidence. A female Swedish prosecutor determined that the charges had no merit, but subsequently some apparently 'convincing' back channel pressure (wonder by whom?) forced Sweden to re-open and then pursue the case.

Assange is no 'hero' to me, and certainly not a person of high character, but anything leaked by him pales in comparison to actions that Bush administration employees Lewis Libby and Richard Armitage et. al. actively pursued in destroying the operations run by Valerie Plame by directly releasing classified information to reporters and ending the CIA career of their under cover officer.
