*sighs* I wanna see a live production of Magic Flute.

Does this mean I should regret not going to watch it?

You can no doubt find a live production of it. What's hard is finding a prime performance. It's a pretty stock play around these parts, and an acquaintance has done one of the parts more than once. There's probably skilled people putting it up in your area, as well, which may be worth catching if that's your thing, even if it's not the preferred cast.

Me, I've yet to gain an appreciation of opera. I need my "skip track" option, and the opera house always complains if I try to make them skip ahead to the next piece of interest. Something about ruining the narrative (huh? narrative? oh, is that what it was) and others maybe wanting to hear the whole thing.

Health,
al-Aswad.

LOL Aswad! I haven't really looked into the arts here. I know there's a jazz festival every year, but I don't know if there's a decent symphony or opera company. Eventually, I'll find out.

There is a wonderful DVD of the performance you've been watching on Youtube. It has the complete performance, and is very well done, production-wise. Every performance is excellent, and Diane and Simon Keenlyside (Papagano) steal the show. The DVD includes English subtitles, so you can see everything being said. There's also a "making off" special, and a feature with Colin Davis, who is pretty much the acknowledged master of Mozart operas. I've seen three different productions, two of them live, and this one, by Covent Garden, is probably the best. Creative and very reasonable. The DVD is available through either ebay or Amazon. Just look for The Magic Flute and pick the one with Diane on the cover.

BTW. if you still want/need a full translation of what she's saying, just let me know. More or less, she's telling her daughter that her father has died, and he gave "the sun" to the guys who run the Temple...more or less literally translated as "the initiated" or "the chosen." She wants her daughter to take the knife and go kill the guy who runs the temple...Sarastro. It is generally assumed that the "Temple" represented the Freemasons, and Mozart was a member. That may or may not be accurate, but it's often played that way.

Isn't it a pain? I gave up on asking the show producers to run a "good bits only" version and tried writing to the nice Mr Mozart and Mr Verdi and that talented Georges Bizet chap asking if they's knock up something with only good bits in.

Rather unfeelingly none of them has replied. Thy need to understand that if they don't listen to their fans the risk is we'll simply stop listening to their music.

Yeah, would be moderately amusing to see Mozart shambling around, muttering 'braains' while he pens a 'best of'.

Barring that, I guess the iPod playlists will have to be the temporary fix. Throw in the portable Stax ear buds, or some regular ear buds like the Etymotics, and then suddenly Olivier Latry's performance on the Midnight at Notre Dame collection disc mutates into a five track soundgasm.

Probably an interesting thing to use for sensory deprivation play.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Actually, Mozart is still working hard. He's lying there, slowly erasing each note he wrote.

He's....decomposing.

Okay, sorry about that.

On a more positive note, here's something else for you:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL175B1796919391BB

That should get you the entire playlist of videos from that same production. They are, more or less, in order. I don't think they have the subtitles showing, but I honestly don't recall..some of them might. I think you'll be wanting the whole DVD after seeing them.
