There's a couple of misconceptions that these guys are losers or what have you...but they really arent.
For some people, the mental stimulation of a "dirty" email is all it takes. For some people, the idea that they are wearing panties under the power suit because a stranger 200 miles away told them to does it.
It's about their kink and what works for them with their lifestyle.
From someone who played the pro domme end of things a while I can tell you that for me, it fits many aspects of BDSM for me. I do not have to be tied down to any one, I do not have to constantly monitor and dominant anyone, I do not have to deal with any of the messiness of being in a relationship and I get my sadistic needs met while giving into the luxury of being somewhat submissive. I allow them to top from the bottom by setting the scene, and I do not have to constantly try to struggle with an internal power play and keeping things on track.
I know it is not something that many people understand, and it is something that most people find to be disreputable. Sadly, I disagree. It is just what works for some people.
ETA- A decent ProDomme, or FinDomme, will take the time to put some work into what she is doing, or at least I did for the short time I did this. I spent time getting to know the person, and more importantly to listen to what they were telling me beyond what they wanted, or what they fantasized about. That's not everyone that is doing this. I know on the other side you see a shit ton of duck faced "18 year old" Dominants that have been doing this for years and like many of you, if not all, I shake my head and laugh. (I actually read the profiles like comics because I get such a kick out of many of them.)
At the end of the day, the dynamic is what works for the people in it. It's not something you have to understand, after all, do you think your mom would understand why you want to be tied down and flogged? Or whatever your kink is? I mean...to the "normal" world, none of what we do is understandable, psychology even calls it sick and says that we need help. Do any of us feel that is true? Eh, probably a slim portion, but most of us are at peace with who we are.
