I believe it was Enerson who said: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."

Now, I would suggest that consistency is a goal; an ideal so, I guess we need to know what a "foolish consistency" is. Is it the act of being consistent, even when shit blows up in your face? Is it (Like AA says) doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

I would like to remove the word "foolish" and focus on consistency.

Most especially those in categories 2 & 4: I'd be interested in knowing how you arrive at the distinction.

I am begging you people to not let this devolve into personal attacks or a righty/lefty debate. I would like to have a serious, mature, and respectful discussion. If you can't handle that, please don't post.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Caught that eh Lucy ?
I kept staring at it and wondering why I didn't see my position
Fuck it,what are you gonna do.....just another attempt to diminish a position,by distorting that position

Not at all. It's a fairly polarizing issue which comes down to: You either support keeping abortion legal or you don't. Pretty simple.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Sorry, can't vote as I'm prochoice not pro-abortion.
It's never been my personal choice and my
reasons for believing it should legal are based on
a number of things. Is there a ethical debate
surrounding abortion? Of course.
I have very concrete reasons for being opposed
to the death penalty. The only exception
I would possibly agree with is treason.
But I see it as a apples and oranges
debate really. And not one I'm interested
in having at the moment. I've given both
issues a great deal of thought and know
where I stand and will remain standing.

You are right ,it is simple there are those that feel a woman should have a choice, there are few,if any, folks who are pro abortion....no one likes abortion.Pretty simple.

I support the death penalty, however not the way it is currently used in the US. I believe the death penalty should be used as a last resort measure for protecting society if incarceration is not sufficient. If a person is spending a decade on death row and in those 10 years has been no threat to society (including prison staff and other prisoners) then I believe executing him is unnecessary.

Don't be so sure of that. Abortion providers are more than happy to keep milking that cash cow.

And morticians are happy for the business they receive, what is your point.
Name any service,no matter how distasteful that service might be,there are those happy to provide it for a fee....again whats your point?
How does that alter the intent of my statement?

Actually, the purpose was to find out the reasoning behind supporting one and not the other. Not - as you so eloquently stated - "to stir up shit". My motive was genuine as my OP stated. I know it's a hard question to answer and I'm sorry you felt the need to attack instead of engaging in thoughtful debate.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Morticians aren't killing other human beings.

And if you know of anyone else killing other human beings you should be sure to report that to the proper authorities

For me to buy what you are a selling I would have to draw the conclusion that you aren't bright enough to realize the bait embedded in your poll.
I will not insult you by suggesting you are that dense or stupid.

Well, dammit, now I'm offended. I'm pro-abortion, and by changing the poll after I had voted that way, you have made me a participant in your capitulation.

I truly apologize but, I didn't want the impression that I was "downing" certain people. I really worded it the way I did, initially because of colloquialism (I sha'n't be making that mistake, again).

I was in Category 4 until about 4 years ago so, I was wondering how others stayed in the categories that most would label as "inconsistent".

Peace and comfort,

Michael

No worries. I'll get over it.

It is an interesting question. I think a lot less people would be, "pro-choice," if they weren't so able to rationalize away the ugly realities, at least to arm's length. They are very much opposed to killing babies after all, they just support the right to do it. Rather like being opposed to slavery, but if you want to own a few, that's good too.
