I've not read all the responses here, so if I repeat someone else's suggestion, I apologize.

As I responded in an earlier thread on insomnia, Firm and I both occasionally have trouble shutting down our minds enough to sleep.  Our solution?  Books on tape.

Seriously.

Pop an audio book file on an ipod or some other such device (I use a Palm, Firm uses a netbook) and using ear buds, listen.  Turn the lights out and do everything else you'd do to go to bed... but instead just lay quietly and listen.

I have my Palm set to auto shut-off after just 20 minutes and I rarely ever make it to that point.  I always pick a good book that I've read before... interesting, but I know what's going to happen so I don't feel like I have to stay awake to hear what happens next.

Firm just loads up one or two chapters of some technical or philosophical book.  From his breathing I'd say he never makes it past five minutes before he's sound asleep.

Thank you Treasure. Others have suggested reading, but you're the first to suggest books on tape, so you're all good lol. Unfortunately I don't have any of those devices (I'm sadly very technicaly deprived) but I can probably find something on CD to play on my computer.

Aha, that's what I need. I've tried books on tape but it's always too much of a struggle to find my place - auto shutoff will fix that. I particularly like Deepak Chopra on tape.

If the insomnia persists, you may went to consider a chat with your doctor. Insomnia can be a sign of other issues, such as depression.

Good luck to you!

I know, as I am not so best friends with depression. I'm already on meds for my psych stuff, and I'm stable (actually improving), so it's not that. Besides, when I'm in a depression all I want to do is sleep.

I have some ideas of what's contributing to my sleep problems, but since I've already been over all that with my Dr (both medical and psych) enough to know they either can't or are unwilling to do anymore or anything about the underlying problems, I have to find other ways to deal with the sleep issue.

I tried the breathing tongue thing I posted earlier, it DEFINITELY helped me drift off faster.

Which, 30 minutes later, was ruined by AMos in huntress yowling mode...LOL

Lilbear, being of a very analytical mind, and in possession of a too-good memory, I often have trouble reining in, and quieting down, my thoughts at bedtime. Basically, what that means is, I'm too often too much "in my head." That tendency, combined with multiple pain issues, makes it difficult for me to get down, get down deep enough, stay down long enough, and get enough restorative sleep to not be exhausted upon waking.

One relatively successful technique I've recently adopted is to "get in my body" at bedtime. How I literally do that is when I've noticed my mind's a'whirring, I direct my minds eye into my body, by turning my vision into and through the back of my eyeballs, and I begin to mentally travel through (beginning at the top of my brain), and check in on all parts of my internal physical body, from head to toe. It's a little journey that literally takes me out of my mind. More often than not, I fall asleep before it's completed. If my mind gets the better of me while doing this, I simply put it back on the task of inner body travel.

I also find it helpful to direct my minds eye to follow my breath, inhalations and exhalations, in and out my nose, and following the breaths path, as well as how and where it raises my chest and abdomen. While doing this, I also mentally direct my breath to all other parts of the body, which becomes more relaxed and sleepy when well oxygenated.

Yoga for Emotional flow is nice for shutting off the brain.

Note - Disc 1 is Yoga Philosophy and Disc 2 has three Guided Meditations - there are no actual yoga postures.

FR

If it's been mentioned, sorry.

A TV documentary a while back showed near perfect cure results on a number of ppl. The trick was to go to bed at a set time and wake up at a set time - every night - and stick to the routine regardless. First few nights were, for most, pretty ghastly and the mornings awful but then things began to improve and after (as I remember) about a week or two all the subjects were able to sleep. Some just reasonably well, others brilliantly well.
