"Susan G. Komen Top Officials Resign As Backlash Gains Steam"

Dr. Kathy Plesser, a Manhattan radiologist on the medical advisory board of Susan G. Komen for the Cure's New York chapter, said she plans to resign from her position unless Komen reverses its decision to pull grant money from Planned Parenthood.

"I’m a physician and my interest is women’s health, and I am disturbed by Komen’s decision because I am a very strong advocate for serving under-served women," Plesser told The Huffington Post. "Eliminating this funding will mean there’s no place for these women to go. Where are these women to go to have a mammography? Do they not deserve to have mammography?"

With her decision, Plesser joins Komen's top public health official, Mollie Williams, and the executive director of Komen's Los Angeles County chapter, Deb Anthony, both of whom also resigned in protest.

So the official reason given for the Komen funding cut was due to Planned Parenthood being under investigation. Here's more on that:

Planned Parenthood Investigation Is An Abuse Of Government Resources, Democrats Charge

Stearns, a staunchly pro-life Republican and the chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, obliged AUL's request earlier this month, opening an extensive investigation into Planned Parenthood and that will stretch all the way back to 1998. Stearns gave Planned Parenthood and its 83 affiliates two weeks to provide a full 12 years of audit reports and other documentation.

Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) wrote a letter to Stearns on Tuesday expressing their opposition to the investigation, which they say is "unwarranted" and "designed to harass and shut down an organization simply because Republicans disagree with the work that it does."

"We are aware of no predicate that would justify this sweeping and invasive request to Planned Parenthood," Waxman and DeGette wrote in the letter. "It would be an abuse of the oversight process if you are now using the Committee's investigative powers to harass Planned Parenthood again. Your fervent ideological opposition to Planned Parenthood does not justify launching this intrusive investigation."

Waxman told HuffPost in an email that he hopes Stearns will reconsider the investigation and find more productive ways to use the subcommittee's resources, such as examining private health insurers who are under-reporting drug manufacturer rebates, or reexamining food safety.

Planned Parenthood, which is regularly audited by the Department of Health and Human Services and found to be in compliance with federal law, contends that it only uses taxpayer money to help low-income patients afford preventative health care and family-planning services. Abortions account for only 3 percent of the health provider's services, and they are paid for out of pocket by the patients.

Back on topic, it says "currently funds" and it's a 5 year grant that began in 2008. Lame policy FAIL. I'm sure there will be more stories like this.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which recently announced that it is ending grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening because of a controversial investigation launched by an anti-abortion Republican congressman, currently funds cancer research at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to the tune of $7.5 million.

Like Planned Parenthood, Penn State is currently the subject of a federal government investigation, and like the Planned Parenthood grant, the Penn State grant appears to violate a new internal rule at Komen that bans grants to organizations that are under investigation by federal, state, or local governments. But so far, only the Planned Parenthood grants appear to have been canceled.

Very true, but Planned Parenthood likes MONEY.

A way to view the potential benefit of breast cancer screening is to estimate the number of lives extended because of early breast cancer detection.[20,21] Harris [22] estimated the outcomes of 10,000 women aged 50 to 70 years who undergo a single screen. Mammograms will be normal (true negatives and false negatives) in 9,500 women. Another expression of this analysis is that one life may be extended per 1,700 to 5,000 women screened and followed for 15 years. The same analysis for 10,000 women aged 40 to 49 years, assuming the same 500 abnormal examinations, results in an estimate that 488 of these will be false-positives, and 12 will be breast cancer. Of these 12, there will probably be only one to two lives extended. Thus, for women aged 40 to 49 years, it is estimated that one to two lives may be extended per 5,000 to 10,000 mammograms.

I'm glad funding is being restored, but IMO that still doesn't excuse them pulling it to begin with.
