"Don't bow to anti-choice pressure. Reestablish breast health funding for Planned Parenthood affiliates."

Susan G. Komen for the Cure just cut funding to Planned Parenthood for breast health screenings, bowing to anti-choice pressure and making breast health care suddenly inaccessible to many women.

Planned Parenthood health centers are often the main source of health care for women in under-served communities, and they provide 830,000 breast exams every year. Without Komen's funding, many of these women will be unable to get the screenings and early detection of breast cancer that saves lives.

It's incredibly disappointing for an organization founded on protecting women's health to play politics with real women's lives. Tell Susan G. Komen for the Cure to put lives ahead of politics.

Too Little Too Late. They've destroyed the brand, and now people are calling for criminal fraud investigations of SE Komen's board since there are questions about their possibly fraudulent solicitation of funds.

They're so tainted, BANK OF AMERICA is talking about pulling their TOP TIER support, since being connected to them is BAD FOR BANK OF AMERICA'S REPUTATION.

You know you're in trouble when BoA is bailing on you because YOU are bad PR.

kalikshama -> RE: Petition: Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics (2/2/2012 11:58:48 AM)

I wanted to add what you said on the other thread:

quote:

So, Komen will TAKE MONEY from companies 'under investigation', as in their ultra-premier sponsor, BANK OF AMERICA, which is under investigation in New York, California, Federal Investigations...

But... When it comes to disbursements...

farglebargle -> RE: Petition: Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics (2/2/2012 1:06:41 PM)

Yup. Fucking Debacle doesn't even begin to describe it.

Lucylastic -> RE: Petition: Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics (2/2/2012 1:58:56 PM)

Dr. Kathy Plesser, a Manhattan radiologist on the medical advisory board of Susan G. Komen for the Cure's New York chapter, said she plans to resign from her position unless Komen reverses its decision to pull grant money from Planned Parenthood.

"I’m a physician and my interest is women’s health, and I am disturbed by Komen’s decision because I am a very strong advocate for serving under-served women," Plesser told The Huffington Post. "Eliminating this funding will mean there’s no place for these women to go. Where are these women to go to have a mammography? Do they not deserve to have mammography?"

With her decision, Plesser joins Komen's top public health official, Mollie Williams, and the executive director of Komen's Los Angeles County chapter, Deb Anthony, both of whom also resigned in protest.

Susan G. Komen, the nation's largest breast cancer charity, announced on Tuesday that it had adopted a new rule against partnering with organizations that are under investigation, and that it would therefore sever ties with Planned Parenthood, which is currently under investigation in Congress. The groups that prompted that investigation are anti-abortion advocacy organizations that have long criticized Planned Parenthood, primarily a women's health and family planning organization, over the fact that some of its clinics offer abortions.

Komen has faced an increasing amount of pressure from the public, women's health groups, lawmakers and even some of its own regional affiliates to reverse the decision and continue its five-year partnership with Planned Parenthood. The $600,000 that Komen donated annually to the organization provided underserved women with free and low-cost breast exams.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Petition: Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics (2/2/2012 2:08:46 PM)

Even better, make a donation to PP, like Michael Bloomberg:

Billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged Thursday to give a piece of his own fortune to Planned Parenthood. The sizable donation-- in which Bloomberg will give $1 for every new dollar Planned Parenthood raises up to $250,000-- is in response to the controversy surrounding the Susan G. Komen Foundation's decision to cease giving grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings.

Breast cancer screening in the US is now subject to moral policing. We all know what that will mean in terms of womens' lives (and deaths).

Another nail in the coffin of the US privatised healthcare system - a failure to provide breast cancer screening would be unthinkable in a publicly funded healthcare system.

Lucylastic -> RE: Petition: Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics (2/2/2012 2:13:16 PM)

Maybe hiring a president who hates PP and is a republican politician wasnt such a good idea.
While I fully support Breast Cancer research and all they have done, ignoring PP is a major clusterfuck.

The only thing that PP does is a manual exam. They do nothing else for breast health since they do not do mammograms on site. There are a lot of hospitals that have charity care that will do them as well, OR Komen can take the money they are giving to PP and open breast health care centers that mammograms. PP doesn't need their money.

Or better yet, donate to PP and have a thank you card sent here:

This from 25 Senators..
Dear Ambassador Brinker,
We write to express our disappointment with Susan G. Komen for the Cure's decision to cut funding for breast cancer prevention, screening, and education at Planned Parenthood health centers. This troubling decision threatens to reduce access to necessary, life saving services. We urge Komen to reconsider its decision.

Planned Parenthood is a trusted provider of health care for women and men. More than 90 percent of the services provided by Planned Parenthood are primary and preventative including wellness exams and cancers screenings that save lives. Each year, Planned Parenthood health clinics provide 750,000 breast exams, 770,000 pap tests and nearly 4 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases. Twenty percent of all women in the U.S. have visited a Planned Parenthood health center.

For the past five years, grants to local affiliates of Planned Parenthood have been an important part of Planned Parenthood's work to protect women from breast cancer. Komen funding for Planned Parenthood has provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and resulted in 6,400 referrals for mammograms. In 2011 alone, grants from Komen provided Planned Parenthood with roughly $650,000 in funding for breast cancer prevention, screening, and education. According to a recent statement by Komen, "In some areas of the U.S., our affiliates have determined a Planned Parenthood clinic to be the best or only local place where women can receive breast health care."

It would be tragic if any woman--let alone thousands of women-- lost access to these potentially life-saving screenings because of a politically motivated attack.

We earnestly hope that you will put women's health before partisan politics and reconsider this decision for the sake of the women who depend on both your organizations for access to the health care they need.

Sincerely,

Interesting to see how this is going to play out

While I can't condone this, I can laugh at it:

Hackers give Susan G. Komen website a much more brutally honest mission statement.

SternSkipper -> RE: Petition: Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Put Women's Lives Before Politics (2/2/2012 2:57:45 PM)

Thanks Kali  (I never know what to call you for short).... I signed and made the following personal remarks, because ever since 98 when a Lady boss of mine got BC, I have given in the ballpark of $100 each year. And I impulsively buy the pink ribbons as gifts for all the women I know, I probably buy 20 a year when I am at the check-out at Walgreens. That said I added the following comment to my e-signature:
Nancy Brinker,
I buy your pink ribbons as gifts for women I know in numbers each year and I also sponsor one walker, including my 9 year old daughter.
And all the time I have been doing this, I have never raised my voice about it, but I AM PRO CHOICE! And it TROUBLES me that I have to raise it now. The women who get scre3ening through your gift (rather OUR GIFT) to planned parenthood generally are in a very low income bracket and are using those facilities as their primary medical care. I resent the stench of blackmail this whole political gesture has to it. And I am letting you know that if this is not promptly reversed, I will be making my apologies to those I usually sponsor and taking that money as well as what I will spend on pink ribbons this year and donate it directly to my local planned parenthood facility.
Best Regards,

I would encourage anyone who's still to sign to make remarks, because it's possible these people just plain don't realize we, their base HAVE these opinions and in specific numbers. Someone somewhere in the food chain will read them

Cause I bet you any money somewhere out there in Bibleland they had a little pancake breakfast where they engineered this ... or they've infiltrated the NPO with this in mind.

It's true they don't do mammograms - look at the age of their clients - only 9% are over age 40, the age of the old guidelines for mammograms, which have since been upwards revised to 50.

Breast exams are more important than mammograms to PP's demographic and as Lucy says:

I believe that breast cancer prevention should be the focus rather than detection via mammograms, but don't get me started on that.

Sorry if it`s already been mentioned but Mayor Michael Bloomberg just put up a 250,000 dollar matching fund for PP.

Lol, it gets abbreviated all sorts of ways. My nick is for the Hindu goddess Kali and the Sanskrit aspect Kshama, and if I could do it over I'd capitalize both Ks to make the separation more clear because Kalik is kind of funny, but it's all good.

I endeavor to channel Kshama on the forums:

Kshama (Sanskrit: "patience; forbearance and pardon") — restraining intolerance with people and impatience with circumstances. Implies remaining serene, patient and observing self-restraint under all circumstances, doing good to all, even to those who may want to harm you.

But sometimes Kali comes out :)
