While I don't like it, I've recently started posting from non-computer machines.  It's easier than proper grammar and vocab and at times the difference between connecting with others in the amount of time and such I've available and not expressing myself.  Of course I'm a lover of wordsmithery, am a programmar gal, and adore plays on words (I know - speaking obviosity here).  But I've also gotten a mite less fussy because I understand the reason behind the text speak tendency.

I know folks here hate it (and I'm not a lover of it).  But you know, we all did get used to touch tone phones, laptops, remote controls, dishwashers, automatic garage door openers, and the like.  Remember George Jetson and all the things that were then scifi and are now de riguer?  Text speak is on that continuum imo.

best,
sunshine

I use it when trying to fit in the amount of characters I need to express myself on twitter.
Sometimes when using my blackberry, but not too often.
I still don't like it, and if someone actually tries to email me (who I don't know) and uses it, I don't pay any attention. (to them or their email)

Agreed...particularly for a first email. Text speak, to me, is a sign of laziness on a forum or in an email (in an actual text or on twitter is a different thing). How much more difficult is it to spell "y-o-u" instead of "u"?

I can't respect people who are lazy.

Sorry to disappoint you. I'm not a snob but I dislike text speak. I can type full words faster than I can think txt spk to type it.

I'm the same way.  If I try text speak it takes longer as I have to think of which letters to use.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

No text speak here, for me it is easier to think up a shorter way of saying what I want to say, than it is to think of how to text speak it.

I use textspeak when I'm on my iphone simply because it's faster and easier for me to get out what I need to say which is usually something where the person needs a quick answer because they're texting me with something they need to know right now like "what is our brother's phone number?" "what size does your daughter take?", etc...when they're out running around or reminding me to pick up something.

But when I'm on my computer it's faster for me to type and it's usually something that isn't important or I can take my time.

Yeah, I don't really like textspeak but it's useful and faster for what you need.

No text speak here, either, except for the occasional LOL and the like for mood. I also use proper capitalization and punctuation in my texts.

I don't use text speak and when others do, I automatically deduct points.

Just to be obtuse, I never have had an auto matic garage opener nor a dishwasher, with exception of 1 group home I lived in as a teen. And no i never really watched the jetsons. I think it was before my tim. Careful with those "we all" statements. Cheeky grin.

Try after your time.

The Jetsons is an animated sitcom that was produced by Hanna-Barbera, originally airing in prime-time from 1962–1963 and again from 1985–1987.

As far as text speak, the man does it and it drives me nuts. My son uses it and I wont answer him until he corrects it.

I do small stuff like LOL or b/c but generally I write words. If we're actually texting? Hey, ne thg gs! If someone can't spell their words in an email? They're not trying hard enough.

LOL - I had to really work to figure that one out. Maybe I don't do text speak because I just don't know how.

Pft... my son loved them and he was younger than you. Reruns were all the rage. Bugs bunny was even older. Bugs was born on July 27, 1940

That's my problem too, Kaliko, I am such a speller that phonetic retreads don't sink in at first. When I was teaching (late 80s) we had this cute book called "C D B!" Full of all kinds of letter-only sayings. Some were really hard!

I can remember my grandparents fighting the microwave they received as a gift. They did NOT want anything to do with it.

I fought getting a computer. I was the last one in my family to get one. (Little did I know how it would affect my life once I did get one.)

I fought cell phones, too, and I still rarely talk on my cell. I use it for text and web, but I still don't like having that thing up next to my brain, no matter how many studies tell me not to worry.

And now I'm fighting the Kindle/Nook, whatever. I just bought my daughter a new hardcover book for $30. She devoured it in a day and now I have a $30 book on the shelf. Would it be more practical to have a Kindle? Yes. But would it be as tangibly wonderful and romantic as holding a brand new keepsake of a hardcover book in your hands to have forever as a memory when you grow older? No. That's worth $30 to me. (Though...only now and then. :)

I have an old, heavy, black rotary phone. I bought it at an antique store, God help me. My daughter and her friend did not even know how to use it. I had to show them. It was so surreal.

Fifteen years ago, I had to explain to my 22 yr old secrtary how the typewriter worked. Yeah.

My grandmother had no fear of technology. Microwave, remote control, she loved it all.
