Status: offline 		while i can't be arsed to use capitals when on sites like this, i am a stickler for correct writing the rest of the time.

i hate text speak with a passion apart from lol, or omg. but as for the rest....aaarrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhh just write the damn thing so i can understand. i mean it's bad enough in a text message, what with qwerty board phones, and free texting, and such. however, if anyone writes to me in any other way using text speak i'll ignore them.

if i were on the look out for someone on the other side then it would be a deal breaker right from the start.

Status: offline 		I think text speak came in with cell phones that didn't have keyboards. I notice my kids, who were the worst text speak offenders, no longer do that because they both have keyboards. As more and more people get those phones, I imagine we'll see less text speak.

If you have so little respect for your reader that you will not to bother to write, why should your reader take the time you saved to try to figure out what it was that you were too lazy to say?

What you call lack of respect others would call making the effort to at least create a dialogue, if imperfectly.  You needn't agree for it to be true.  Not everyone follows your rules, and those that do, I expect don't do so perfectly all the time.

As an aside, these have been around for years.  Skype is also a fairly popular thing; so is youtube. And yet... text speak still seems to be growing.

In the meantime, this is not Twitter, it's a bulletin board. You are not limited to a handful of characters. There is nothing forcing you to be rude.

And yet you find it to be an acceptable choice within all that wordiness for you to be so.

Bottom line, my high I.Q. does not give me the ability to read your mind.

Well golly... this here stoopid person thought that text speak was an actual method of written communication.  It would seem you are too lazy (to use your own term) to learn what is and is not common knowledge. 

Using "words" that are not words does not bring me down to your level.

Shakespeare did it all the time, and yet he's not exactly considered a moron.  Perhaps you are not aware of the number of words that join any living language.  Heck, I remember when google was a number. 

It makes me discard your message. If that is what you are trying to do, keep it up. If you are instead hoping I will grit my teeth and slog through the muck you spatter on the page, stop.

I'm not sure why you would address this to me specifically - being as I rarely do it, and don't particularly like it - as I clearly pointed out in the OP, but to each his own.  If you are too lazy to learn the language as it evolves and choose instead to live in the stagnant past, I don't believe I would really care whether you read the "muck" that I "splatter on the page."  Luckily, plenty of people pay for my muck.

Try using text speak in a resume or job application and see how fast the "snobs" do NOT give you a job.

Count me in with the "snobs". Even my 19 year old daughter knows when text speak is appropriate and when it's not.

When she replied that she could lift heavy boxes really high by her self, it took me a moment to realize she was, in fact, answering my question.

It also made me aware of one more way something could be misunderstood.

After the interview was over, I realized that picking up heavy boxes was, in fact, probably her greatest strength. She didn't get the job.

when kids get video phones the ability to write and spell will die too

isn't that part of the problem people have with text speak? I think my spelling has actually improved by using predictive texting, if I go for a long word and it blanks me I know I have got it wrong and it forces me to think of the right spelling. Spelling and grammar are actually important, if the words ou write have the wrong meaning because you can't spell and your grammar is rubbish what's the point?

Boomerang runs the Jetsons everyday. I'm still
waiting for the jet packs and flying cars.
Text speak is irritating to me and I don't
think I've ever used it. Most phones have
keyboards now so it seems a bit of a bother
more than a convenience.
Text speak in a email is depressing.
I especially dislike U for you. There's something
hostile seeming about that U.

I can see your point... phrases shortened cool, words not so much.  That seems like a reasonable line in the sand... (lits ?) wee!!!  I made up a text speak word!

This convo reminds me of all the license plates that you have to figure out!  I remember one of the Olympic skaters had one that read sk8n4au and it took me a minute to figure out that the au was meant to equal gold.  I. R. Geeks helped me out!

Status: offline 		True, but it was easily understandable. So much of txt spk isn't. Especially when made of symbols.

Years ago I remember my daughter sending me the message C U L8R. My response was to ask why she sent a garbled form of the word culture, which was my best guess.

Unless everyone understands these short forms, it makes communication more difficult instead of easier. And a lot of time, when I have gotten those odd things, I assume it isn't important and just ignore it instead of asking for it to be translated into English.

Status: offline 		I have a 20 year old daughter. She basically taught me textspeak from her sending me texts instead of just calling me. She hates calling me but she'll text me all day long. To her it's perfectly normal, like breathing. She doesn't even give it a second thought. While I don't know all of textspeak, there are times when it is really useful.

I personally think it's just a generation gap thing.
