I used to text speak all the time then someone I cared about deeply said it made me look stupid. I was hurt but re accessed an decided he was right. It was not presenting myself in a light I wanted to.

I'm betting not. Even if YOU choose not to use these things - and they do affect your life even in little ways, you most likely don't give people a hard time because of it. TO everybody: I understand that communication is different in that it is about connecting with other people, but in reality we do use some text speak (as noted previously - lol and b/c and imo and wiitwd and such). It rather begs the question of 'where is the line'? Why are lol and the others acceptable but sum1 is not? While I do think that "u" instead of "you" is kinda lazy (see how I didn't write 'kind of'?), I look back at a couple of posts I wrote this evening and realize I have "form" instead of "from" and forgot the word "not" in a post - which COMPLETELY changes my post... but people aren't giving me a hard time about it. What is it about TEXT SPEAK specifically that gets people's dander up? best, sunshine

Message here entirely in text speak--because as evidenced, I don't always know what they're saying! That "ne" I learned a few days ago. Would it really have been that hard to type "any"? I don't know. I know that abbreviations of phrases (imo, wtf) don't bother me, but words diminished to a letter do. It's just a thing. Does the sentence work visually? Is it easy to understand the meaning? If meaning is lost via abbreviation, then the whole purpose of the writing is thwarted.

I'm a person that looks in the thesaurus almost every day - when I post here, when I post on Facebook, when I write things at work, when I type emails to friends...I want to always get the word just right. I enjoy words. I can't chop them up and I can't punctuate them incorrectly. I don't like to write that way and I don't like to read that way. I'm not flowery or artsy in my writing, but I am usually accurate with my nuances. Text speak allows for only the basics, and crudely at that. There's nothing wrong with it. (I guess.) It just is a big turnoff for me. It's the same reason I dislike typos so much. Everybody does it, including me, but it just throws the whole thing off-kilter when my brain has to work around a typo. It's like driving over a speed bump. A message full of text speak would be like driving over a pothole filled road - I'll get to the end, but it will be a bumpy and unpleasant ride.

I dont send out text messages with half spelled words, I dont shorten are to r, you to u, and the first time I saw idk, I had to ask my son what that meant. I gave him a great education. I expect him to use it when communicating with me. With his friends, he can use whatever language he desires, and they can decide if they accept it. When he communicates with me, I expect at least an attempt at proper spelling.

I avoid text speak whenever possible. I'm more concerned with my receiver's ability to read my message easily than I am in the convenience of typing an abbreviated message. When I receive text speak messages I still have that underlying feeling that the sender is lazy.

If I texted from a phone, I would definitely use textspeak, or lose my friggen mind, takes me forever to write anything with a full keyboard and spellcheck.

I'm not a fan of textspeak -- even if it is part of the oncoming future, that doesn't mean I have to like it or use it. =p Not all developments are good ones. I have used it begrudgingly at times, but it's definitely not my preference. Part of the reason I never signed up for twitter is because of the limited number of characters. I like words, I like writing, I like typing, I like reading. I don't need to make any of those things shorter unless it's an absolute necessity. I can think of it as this generation's version of shorthand, which was once considered a valuable skill. When writing a boatload of notes, I have definitely used symbols and abbreviations to avoid massive hand cramps later. =p But while it can be a good skill when needed, you still don't communicate that way, you don't write term papers or letters to friends that way.

I dislike it because it is lazy and because I often do not understand what the other person is saying. For example, I got a text last night that said: ({})<3<3 and I had no idea what that meant. I asked and he said it means I love you. I said, then why not just say so.

It will die when kids get videophones. (Checks watch) In the meantime, this is not Twitter, it's a bulletin board. You are not limited to a handful of characters. Bottom line, my high I.Q. does not give me the ability to read your mind. Using "words" that are not words does not bring me down to your level. It makes me discard your message.
