Not really, since essentailly most are walking barefoot when walking in flip flops and such. It is more than a bit disgusting to think about.

Well speaking as one who has walked barefoot whenever possible for 46 years, through not only Canadian cities and countryside, but those in India, Cambodia, and Japan as well, I find this statement absurd.
The worst thing I ever had happen to my feet was to get a tiny fish bone in a toe while swimming at a pristine untouched beach with crystal clear water in the Gulf of Siam.....no parasites, no rot, no nothing other than the odd splinter or cut. If there is a risk involved, it is slight.

As always it's about personal choice and risk. Since being with my partner, I've come to enjoy being barefoot far more often outside of the house. While I'd still avoid areas that need good foot coverage and try and avoid getting cut or hurt, I DID walk barefoot through the streets of DC and a whole metro trip because it was pouring rain, I had no umbrella and my stilletto sandals were killing me.
