Hasn't the twat Gringrich had Larry Niven and his talentless oaf friend cowrite a shitawful SF novel about climate change with him?
Maybe Pops should be mentioning that rather than Gore's book...

No, "L" is an initial not a name.

Agreed. L is the initial of his first name. His first name is Lafayette.

Ron is not and never was his first name so why did you say it was?

kdsub -> RE: romney's favorite book is battlefield earth by l ron hubbard (2/8/2012 1:32:51 PM)

I will take the flak...I liked the book...I saw nothing in it that had anything to do with sciencetology...That said the movie was terrible.

Judging by what he said in the clip, he just liked it for its entertainment value rather than because it carried any sort of religious or political message...

er... yes surely it does? If he took the text seriously then I agree that would be cause for worry but he said it was fun science fiction while pointing out that he didn't like the religion. Hubbard's books have been turned into films, partly of course because scientologists are behind them but also because they made an OK transition to screen.

Yeah, but the thing is it is piss poor shitty science fiction....so again he is a putz [:)]

Yeah, if Vinnie Barbarino cant pull the motherfucker off, you know its got no jizz whatsoever, not even a scootch.

Either that or he is just being honest on this particular matter because I'm sure many of us who no doubt possess the most refined impeccable taste also like shitty films, programmes or books we might find a wee bit embarrassing to acknowledge! lol

When does the word CULT sink in with America????
The guy's favorite Author is the dude who has been the most successful in modern western civilization at promoting a cult which entails GREYLIANS coming to earth to subjugate us. WTF America?

Yeah, why worry... Like Bill Maher says "Obama will beat Romney like a run away sister wife",

BTW - Battlefield Earth is douchebaggy science fiction and I am kinda put off that the guy who wants to lead the free world reads total shit written by a guy who's been trying to perfect mind control for 4 decades.

It's amazing, but a truth that so many people have no sense of humor here on the boards.

You did not like Fallen Angels? You realize that it was written in 1991 as a tribute to sci-fi fandom and not as a response to Al Gore, right?

Personally, I like much of Pournelle's writing. Considering the awards he has won and the volume of work he has published, I think that "talentless oaf" is inaccurate.

Battleship Earth might seem like great literature for someone who has plowed through the Book of Mormon. Have you ever tried to read that shit? When reading the B of M, it seems clear it is part of the biggest religious hoax in history; at least until Scientology came along. Magic eyeglasses or not.

"Talentless oaf" is probably giving Pournelle too much credit. Volume is no guarantee of talent: Jeffrey Archer and Jeremy Clarkson have both published a fair bit, after all.
His main achievement as a writer is seeing to it that the rather more talented Larry Niven hasn't written anything much worth a shit since the turn of the '80s.

(ETA): Has Pournelle ever he won any awards for anything he did on his tod, rather than with Niven, anyway? His Prometheus and Heinlein award were both for collaborations, iirc.

So, I'm guessing you read his blog?

Moonhead -> RE: romney's favorite book is battlefield earth by l ron hubbard (2/9/2012 4:50:21 AM)

I used to read the Byte column, but I've no interest in his blog. (Largely because I used to read the Byte column...)
I take it he comes across as a bit of a self important cock on that, and still can't shut up about how he worked for NASA for ten minutes in the '80s?
