Status: offline 		I don't even have to click the link to ascertain everything that is important about this post. a) They are America's PREMIERE uncared for psychiatric patients b)They're apparently "at it again". c) Why can't some nice judge grow enough of a sack to declare them a danger to themselves (Face it, they're all DEAD the first time they go to a vet's funeral and the police don't know in advance) and others.

Im just waiting for the day when a cop finally says... fuck it!.. and walks away on a mysterious call across the county that requires all police in the vicinity to attend.

WBC, the religion that impersonates a religion, by its very existence, ridicules and parodies the Christian God and religion 24/7/365. Sorry, if it's OK for them it's OK for everyone else too.

ETA: I remember hearing about the activities of a group of bikers whose interventions to protect the innocent from WBC seems to have been effective in putting these WBC loonies off the radar for a while. Where are these guys when they're needed?

Up here Tazzy, there's a Vet's motorcycle club that has attended the three funerals they hit in New England. They interviewed a big guy on NECN (I think) last year that said something like "One of these times, we're just going to forget the police are there and hopefully, they'll extend the same courtesy. Remember, a lot of cops are Vets.".

Hundreds of people have already vowed online to show up to keep the Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funeral, which will be at Life Center Church in Tacoma at 11 a.m.

This is just getting out. This is the death of two little boys. To be honest with you, you should stay away. This will turn ugly.

IF they show up. It wont be the first time they have threatened then stayed away.

Status: offline 		This same bunch showed up in Tucson last year after the shooting of Congresswoman Giffords. They were going to protest at the funeral for the little girl who was killed, but the legislature passed a bill banning protests within 300 feet of a funeral service. Then there were some people who planned to hold up large banners to block the protesters from sight at the funeral service, so the family wouldn't have to see these miscreants. But then they cancelled out at the last minute.

But maybe that's what they can do in Seattle. If they can't stop the protest, they might be able to block them from being seen.

And we can have a cute little codicil to our charter where the kids paint flowers on big rocks for stoning the westboro crowd because it's the only acceptable method of 'cleansing their souls'

side note. Twice, that bunch of fuckwits has announced they were going to protest a vet's funeral in TN. Both times, the sight of a couple of thousand pissed off rednecks convinced them that their best bet was to grab toto, get in the van and don't stop until they were safely back in Kansas.

Status: offline 		This is so awful. I understand the First Amendment issues involved, but I'm starting to think that protests during a funeral should not be allowed at all. An entire family is in grieving, and this is just cruel. Can anyone articulate why they can't be restricted to protesting either before or after the day of the funeral, but not during? It seems to me the right of the family to a private, quiet and peaceful funeral should outweigh the First Amendment rights of the Westboro Church.

Status: offline 		Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has decided picketing of funerals is acceptable.  But this particular picket seems especially heinous, even for the WBC guys.  It is no doubt in response to the recent passage of a Gay Marriage bill in the State of Washington.

I haven't been following the specifics of those cases - but I thought those were military funerals - i.e., the protests were allowed because they were considered protests against the state, at an event that was considered a "state" interest because of the military personnel (but I readily admit, I could be wrong about this).

This is a private funeral of two boys who have nothing to do with the government, military, gay rights, etc. I really do not understand why protests should be allowed at this funeral. Obviously I should try and track down some of these cases and sort through how they are getting to this conclusion, at what seems to me a completely private event.

The WBC is protesting because they believe God punishes the United States for its tolerance of sin, which they believe includes accepting homosexuality. So they believe God killed these two boys to punish Americans for the sin of accepting homosexuality. This is so tenuous a connection to this particular funeral that even though I am a huge First Amendment advocate, this really seems like too much to me.
