ORIGINAL: Iamsemisweet Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has decided picketing of funerals is acceptable. But this particular picket seems especially heinous, even for the WBC guys. It is no doubt in response to the recent passage of a Gay Marriage bill in the State of Washington. I haven't been following the specifics of those cases - but I thought those were military funerals - i.e., the protests were allowed because they were considered protests against the state, at an event that was considered a "state" interest because of the military personnel (but I readily admit, I could be wrong about this). This is a private funeral of two boys who have nothing to do with the government, military, gay rights, etc. I really do not understand why protests should be allowed at this funeral. Obviously I should try and track down some of these cases and sort through how they are getting to this conclusion, at what seems to me a completely private event. The WBC is protesting because they believe God punishes the United States for its tolerance of sin, which they believe includes accepting homosexuality. So they believe God killed these two boys to punish Americans for the sin of accepting homosexuality. This is so tenuous a connection to this particular funeral that even though I am a huge First Amendment advocate, this really seems like too much to me.
